yeah great cover of this dylan gem ,, taken from the chimes of freedom quad cd album of covers of bobs songs ,, steve earl does a great version of one more cup of coffee ,, quite a few decent renditions on this dylan tribute album.
it is strange how a simple twist of fate can change you radically forever. A smile a hello a would you like to see what is further on up the road at a Woodstock concert and a world is born that goes on and on forever changed by that simple twist of fate
This was a very tasteful cover. Now, I just listened to a live cover of this same song by Coldplay. Their's wasn't as good as this, but it was pretty decent and they didn't butcher it or change anything drastically. Yet people were ragging on them ridiculously: "Aborted attempt at a song," "talentless piece of shit," etc. People on youtube have a thing against superstars, so when they actually cover a great song, they don't get appreciated. Glad no one's ragging on Diana Krall like that on here.
09.10.1975 They sat together in the park As the evening sky grew dark, She looked at him and he felt a spark tingle to his bones. 'Twas then he felt alone and wished that he'd gone straight And watched out for a simple twist of fate. They walked along by the old canal A little confused, I remember well And stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burnin' bright. He felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train Movin' with a simple twist of fate. A saxophone someplace far off played As she was walkin' by the arcade. As the light bust through a beat-up shade where he was wakin' up, She dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate And forgot about a simple twist of fate. He woke up, the room was bare He didn't see her anywhere. He told himself he didn't care, pushed the window open wide, Felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate Brought on by a simple twist of fate. He hears the ticking of the clocks And walks along with a parrot that Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailers all come in. Maybe she'll pick him out again, how long must he wait Once more for a simple twist of fate. People tell me it's a sin To know and feel too much within. I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring. She was born in spring, but I was born too late Blame it on a simple twist of fate
There are some really fine covers out there and Diana's is one of them. Bob Dylan . however , is not so much looking for melancholy as he is pathos. He is the master of pathos. No version comes close to his ( in my highly subjective POV ).
Very nice. Hey you know what. The Elvis estate should have invite her to "duet" on "Fever" rather than Mister Bubbles. It's more suited if it was done with a Lady. Never mind. For Volume 2 album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Estate should invite Diana to duet with the King. Tracks that would suit her are "Until it's Time For You To Go", "Love me Love the Life I Lead" and "True Love Travels on the Gravel Road".
she breathes a tenderness and a sorrow into it that Bob doesnt capture quite as well. I like Bobs rendition of his song but hers touched me and made me realize how sad and achingly tender the song really is
Yes. The Dallas video - id'd as tOJVU0ZCh4c here - is her best version on RU-vid that I've seen. Accompanied only by Nathaniel Smith's plucked cello, she manages to turn it into a better jazz piece than Krall does, and I wouldn't have said that was possible if I hadn't heard it. How the hell can a 21 year old girl do this?
Not easy to cover Dylan's songs. But there is a great melancholy that permeates through her interpretation. I like it just as she sings it: bittersweet, a bit down and sad.NB
The Baez cover is better than the original (and she even improved upon the "parrot that talks" foolishness) This is a great cover, too: Krall's restraint is very effective IMO.
I like a lot the original, it's one of the best songs Dylan wrote. As his fan, I say it's one of his 100 best songs (around 60, 50), but dammit. Diana did it way better...
