I was there in the rain. My cousin was one of the african dancers opening the show. The journey out of Central Park to the subway and back home in all of that rain was an experience i'll never forget and so was that concert. Watching her sing in the rain, and the crowd loving it all was amazing.
There is something so beautiful in Diana's soul that goes beyond all the petty human judgements of her mistakes, her temperament and her limitations. This woman was born to perform and to communicate, which is a loving gift she has given generously for many decades now. She has shown by example the virtues of hard work, vital energy, perseverance, setting goals & creating dreams, beautiful values and personal transformation. Let's honor Diana Ross and hold her up to the Light with Love***
she releases negative energy we need to follow her example be a kind soul this is why millions of us love her so much of not of her singing but she can sing for me anytime but her spirit is beautiful and not fake like many be
@@kevinmansell8746 she came back the next day and completed the show. She had the eyes of the World on New York, America's largest during the Summer for two days straight. Not Michael, Madonna or Beyonce have have topped that.🤔
I was there in the back of the crowd and no, the sun didn’t come out. This Thursday show started around 6 or 7 so it was too late for sun even w/o rain. But the rain ended the show early. I was there again Friday, when the weather was nice.
MAGNIFICENT!I was fifteen years old when I saw this magnificent goddess on stage performing at the greatest outdoor concert of all time! When Diana started to sing 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough"I went crazy!Goose pimples popped up all over my body!It was an amazing feeling,I even get the chills today watching this beautiful lady!
i also remember this day, i was glued to the set and when i saw the rain coming i was crushed, thankfully the show went on the next day. only a real legend like Diana can command an audience that big to return.
it took her 6 mintues to sing it but i did love that dance she did with her dancers i thought i heard some thunder already yep i heard the drums but thunder is loud
I have the concert on DVD and I love watching it every now and then. So amazing. I can't imagine actually BEING there, in person (because this was 6 years before I was born >_
At the Central Park concert with my Husband(rip)🎸🎶, and our precious, beautiful handsome son was six months old, Bronx born 1983; we absolutely enjoyed your concert even thru the rain. It was beautiful.
I was 20 years old in Oakland and we had cable installed for the first time a day before my mother's 60th birthday. When we told her we would be able to see Diana Ross in concert, she was over the moon!
I remember this being on Tv and wishing i was old enough to be there in the crowd. Beautiful moment whrn it rains later and she purses her lips and blows sexily on the crowd to dry them. There is only on Miss Ross! Happy birthday you beautiful, inspiring lady!!!
I was also at this amazing concert the first night. It was my 13th birthday present and even though it was rained out, seeing how she handled everything made it worth it and i would not change the first day for second one for anything in the world and the world was there that first night. When she put on that red chiffon cape and the wind made it blow. I mean you can't get that kind of stuff out of a fashion model and thats their job. And when it started to pour and she still stood there singing saying it feels good, i'm not going to melt. I thought WOW she really is a force of nature!!!!! Will never stop loving Miss Diana Ross
Have to give her props for honoring her African heritage. In spite of what anyone says, she defined international glamour and success and set a bar no one else could achieve at this time.
i get why the Supremes broke up jealousy sits in i thought that was so sad to me she try for many years the reunion of Supremes it finally happen in 1999 but she loved those ladies who begin their careers with her so i do not see why they should have gotten so jealous of Diana Ross
@mikel3363 I'm 56 and have been with Miss Ross since 1964 - 47 Years! The last 12 months have been the worst 12 months of my life, but one bright spot - VERY bright spot is Diana Ross. Whatever she is to whoever, she has been a source of energy for me since I first heard Baby Love on the radio that fall evening in my room. I loved what you wrote-much more eloquent and succinct that my words- but exactly my thoughts. Her force, more fierce than ever, will be cross country this fall - bring it on!
when she said in the rain that Thursday July 22nd 1983 They were saying in her ear to get off the stage they were worried about her being electricuted she said it took her a life time to get there she isn't going anywhere she was very worried of the fans it was dark the lights on her and them too keep them from pushing and sholving and hurting one another i honor her for being there for fans princess Diana Ross am always her number 1 fan
I got caught in the storm earlier today and had to walk home in it (no umbrella). Now I see how she felt having to Sing & Perform in it. She literally woke the crowd up🤦🏾♂️ AMAZING ❤️ AND TODAY 7/21 MARKS THE 39TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS CONCERT.
Not sure if anyone knows, or remembers, this, but she did a make up concert because of the rain and donated, I think, about 10k to the city as well. That means she put on almost 2 free concerts and paid out of her own pockets to help the city and with the park clean up. You don't find that kinda of class in celebrates anymore.
I remember watching this a a kid live on showtime as a kid first concert I ever watch! and I got the chance to meet and talk to her as a normal person.. lol
Me and my friend and our mothers were on the bus in NY coming from NJ and were told on the bus that the concert was cancelled due to the rain...good days..good memories...glad I did get to see her in concert at a later date. My favorite entertainer...
I have one question, wouldn't the bus have gotten there right as the concert was starting? It didn't start thundering and raining until a half hour into it. Traffic due to the storm? Either way, glad you got to eventually see her perform. Lucky you almost got to go to the big concert. I wasn't born yet, sadly. :(
@RenMarieAustinMusic you know what you might be right. I was just sitting here remembering when i watched this on TV as a kid and I can't recall anyone doing anything quite like that since :-)
Peter Gabriel had the drummers of Burundi in his 1982 shows I think. They were great and also on his 4th album thatvmyear. And he had Yossou N'dour and L'Etoiles of Dakar in 1987. Fabulous drumming, like this. However he didn't dance or wear an outfit like Diana!😅❤ When she sings Endless Love in the rainstorm, that does it for me. Amazing. I was in NYC that day from England as a kid. I wish I had seen this show but at least I walked in Central Park at teatime that day.
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER. SHE IS A MINDBLOWER. WHAT TALENT AND PRESENCE. OPRAH SAID THE HIGHEST COMPLIMENT SHE COULD PAY DIANA IS THAT "HER CHILDREN ADORE HER". I THINK THEY ARE IN AWE OF HER LIKE THE REST OF US. I LOVE HER.
LOL. I can't tell you how many people you've won over to her side. Dozens of people who once thought they hated Diana Ross, have come and told me how much they love and can't get enough of her, now. LOL And many of them cited these youtube videos. Thanks Niles, Stephan, Chico, Mr. G, Dianarossreedit, and everyone else.
I remember when this aired on HBO .... one of the best concerts of all time .... I wish HBO would remaster and release it on DVD ... nobody does it like Miss Ross ... before or after. She's the best!
I WAS THERE THAT FIRST DAY WITH MY UNCLE AND BEST FRIEND, THAT POM POM COAT HAS ALWAYS STAYED IN MY MIND, THE FOOLS THAT WERE TRYING TO RUIN IT BY ROBBING IS WHY SHE STAYED IN THE RAIN,PEOPLE STARTED SCREAMING BECAUSE ASSHOLES WERE JUMPING OUT OF THE TREE'S AND ROBBING PEOPLE AND WHEN SHE HEARD THAT SHE TURNED TO US AND SLOWLY STARTED SINGING,SAYING SHE WASN'T GOING TO LEAVE UNTIL SHE HEARD THE SCREAMING STOP,SHE CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY AND BLEW IT UP,I THINK IT WAS SOMETHING LIKE 8 MAYBE 9000 PEOPLE THE FIRST DAY AND MAYBE 7 THE NEXT,THAT STARTED THE FREE CONCERTS IN CENTRAL PARK DURING THE SUMMER,HE ONE FOR BOB MARLEY WAS INCREDIBLE TOO. KIVE YOU ALWAYS MISS ROSS💋❣💯
I saw this show on PBS tonite and it's amazing. I always wished I had gone to this show. Fortunately, though, I had been at the Elton John show three years earlier. I can't believe it's been over 30 years since then.
Ive thought about this extraordinary show alot since then!WOW,3 days after me&my bros.15th birthdays.I remember hangin around outside & i guess MOMS said the word & we went inside & were just glued 2 the screen, ill never 4get this concert!Thank u NilesNL,this is my early birthday present for JULY 18th!!! :)
I've thought long and hard on this but I think Diana hit her peak in beauty in that orange beaded jumpsuit with wrap. When the clouds darken and the wind is blowing her hair and the wrap...absolutely majestic
GAWD she was weird during this era...but really at the peak of her beauty and voice, for sure! I admire how she held things together and came back for a second day.
i know there is remastered version of this show, not sure why they don't release it for purchase. It was done for Diana's birthday a few years ago and released in theaters for a limited time.
