Jacarandas are a plant (which makes sense, since Isabela's gift involves the ability to grow/control flowers and plants). All the plants she mentions (strangling figs, hanging vines, palma de cera, etc) are outside of the "perfect" image expected of her, which she wants to break free from, hence her desire to start growing flora like those.

My favorite moment in this song is such a blink and you'll miss it, but when Isabella first hits the powder and gets dirty, she looks at Mirabel with almost fear, like she expects Mirabel to get angry at her and as soon as she sees that Mirabel is excited for her, she just dives in, and its just such a sad, beautiful moment that shows just how rooted the need to be clean and pretty is in her, the line where she says that she'll still be ok even if the person she wants to be isn't perfect 💔😭

I know, it's such a subtle moment but really hammers it in. She's not allowed to be messy or colorful or silly; she has to be perfect 24/7.

Isabella, like so many other characters in this movie, is astonishingly deep. You see her first as a stuck-up snob that looks down on her magicless sister, when in realty from hindsight you realise she was so mean to Mirabel because she was JEALOUS that Mirabel had absolutely zero expectations piled on her shoulders. She saw Mirabel as being completely free of obligations, and resented that fact. I adore the fact that Isa didn't hesitate a moment to hug Mirabel in thanks after her little sister helped her break through the perfect facade she'd been forced to hold up for so long :)

Plus, I’m pretty sure Isabela was the first born grandchild. Like the things Luisa touches on about being an older sister in Surface Pressure, being the firstborn probably has its whole other complex of pressures and perfections put upon her.

Just right before the song starts, Isabella screams "I didn't want to marry him, I was doing for the family". So right from there we can see that she is so pressured to be "the perfect" one that pleases the family's expectations. Meaning that her feelings, dreams and goals don't matter.
@Archangelarts
@Archangelarts 2 года назад
The "Golden Child" in any family usually knows that they're the Golden Child. But they also see that love in the family is conditional so they are *desperate* to never lose that "golden" status. Jacarandas are trees commonly found in South America. What awesome was that some latin people believed that if a jacaranda flower drops on your head then it means good fortune since the Jacaranda tree represents wisdom, rebirth, wealth and good luck. The meaning behind this tree is so rich and it really fits to this song since it showed the ribirth of Isabela as a person as well as the reconciliation of the two sisters (Isabela and Mirabel).

I like that line because, poetically, rhyming "be" with "be" isn't exactly perfect, and you know Lin Manuel Miranda is capable of constructing a better rhyme than that. But he didn't, because the line is about being imperfect, so the flaw is embraced, making something that isn't technically ideal into something even more poetic than a "perfect" line would've been.

BTW the part where Mirabel begins to sing at 5:46 has the very same background music as Isabel's part in "we don't talk about bruno" where she told us what bruno told her, it is this way because this part should reflect her previous and fortold life. Then Mirabel sings higher to give Isabel the opportunity to step into a new future. And THIS is what you call a really great through thought song

As the eldest of 3 siblings, I relate to Isabela a LOT. I had to get good greats, good responses from my teachers, while also being sociable and liked by many. It's so fricking tiring to always act in front of people, to show them something that they'll like, and something that won't put my family in a bad light. While my parents celebrate my siblings for passing, me being valedictiorian, getting numerous awards, and joining tons of contests are just the average they expect of me. I can understand Isabela's struggle, and also see why she treats Mirabel badly. Though it's awful, I myself can't help but feel annoyed seeing my siblings doing whatever because they can do just that without getting scolded or told to do something better. They can mess up and all they'll get is a slap on the wrist, meanwhile if I do something short of exemplary, my parents would tell me that I disappointed them and that I made my family look bad. I'll get guilted into doing better and better until I'm just burnt out, trying to churn out good grades and acting as if I have my life in order when truly, all I just want is a fucking rest where I don't need to be smiling, or kind, or smart. Being the eldest, hell just being labeled the "Golden child" regardless of age is a hellish condition. Watching Isabella break free from the pattern warmed me up to the point of sobbing coz it's exactly what I want to be able to do.

I love that the house reflects the state of the family. A house only becomes a home when you can feel welcomed, happy and safe in it, with your family at your side (I also have a theory that the House is alive because it's Grandpa Pedro's soul in it, and when the house starts crumbling it's him going "please, enough. Stop hurting this little girl!" So when Abuela finally talks to Mirabel and they finally understand each other, when the reason why he was so willing to sacrifice himself finally starts shpwing itself again in a loving family, safe and happy, he returns to the rebuilt house and goes back to watching over his family as he's done before, now that they finally understand and love each other unconditionally. Also, Mirabel has no Gift because, just like Abuela has no Gift either, but is the Caretaker of the house, she's gonna take her place and become the next leader and Matriarch of the family. That's why, just like Abuela, Mirabel has such a deep connection to the house, and it listens to her requests)

The other plants she made (if you’re familiar with plants) are succulents and cactii and other plants not typically seen as beautiful, are hardy and/or prickly. But that’s also the point. I can relate so much to Isabela, from start to end of the movie. Once she started singing, and was singing all those lyrics, it hit me. Being the oldest sibling in a Hispanic household is hard, because everyone expects you to be someone who is perfect like Isabela. And all I want is to be myself and not pretend to be happy and fake smile when I’m around those people who think I’m “perfect” cause I’m way far from being that. And also I carry so much pressure like Luisa, again having the responsibility of many things just because of being the oldest, when I truly want to just take a break and relax.

I enjoyed this reaction very much. A lot of reactors gloss over isabellas background story. Which is sad if you identify with her. The sentence that struck me the most was before the song. „ I was stuck being perfect all my life and all you ever did for me was mess things up“ I can relate to that. My sister was rebelling so much that I needed to be the better one , good example someone who never makes mistakes you have to clear up. My sister got really jeolous of my status as the golden child and actually began to try sabotaging me. And I was always really angry about that because I fulfill this status so she can keep digging around. This hate they have for each other is really realistic from what I can tel l from my experience.

Not sure if already mentioned, but plants are originally (long ago) a key ingredient to how paint was made. So the part on top of the house where colors are exploding, like paint bombs or spray paint, it is symbolic for wanting to be rebellious - to break away from this role she has taken up. Since she was given the power to grow flowers, which is seen as elegant, she put on a facade that fit it. And maybe it was okay at first to fit the role given to her, but she too grew out of that and wants to be herself.

Something I noticed is that the image of roses we have is just the flower, completely ignoring the rest of the plant, especially the thorns. We don't have a real view on the plant, just that it's pretty. But a cacti we think about the entire thing, especially the thorns, making it a lot more real. Plus, like a rose, it has a beautiful flower, but that flower isn't overshadowing the image of the rest of the plant. That's probably why the cacti is the first plant Isabella creates when she starts revealing her true self, still beautiful, but more real.

The colors on Isabella's dress with all the pollen are the colors of the Colombian flag(red, yellow, and blue). That was an amazing detail.

Jacarandas are beautiful trees. I lived in Tampa, Florida for years and every year there would be these strange and wonderful bursts of purple blooming in the middle of all the average green leafed trees. They looked like something plucked from a Monet painting. It was even beautiful when the leaves/petals fell to the ground. A magical purple blanket all over the street or yard. ❤❤❤ I think they come in other colors too, but I saw purple the most.

Binge watching your Encanto reactions and I love how you pay attention to the lyrics of all the songs. You even go back whenever you missed a part because you spoke or when you loved a part. Shows you're really into what you're reacting. Thank you for not reacting just for the sake of reaction. ^,^

I am so glad the family resolved all this in some way by the end of the movie 😂😂 can you imagine if Isabella had been forced to go through with it? 😬 I mean she clearly already hates having to do everything perfectly, and having and raising children can be HARD. I can't imagine the type of pressure that someone in that role would feel.

This was something another youtuber pointed out, but if you compare her singing voice in the songs before What Else Can I Do with the songs after it, you can hear a change in singing style which kind of indicates how she doesn’t act perfect anymore

“Deeply, Madly, Truly” is also a reference to a song from the 90s called Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden. I have a feeling Lin Manuel Miranda loves that song a lot because he also referenced it in In the Heights

Jacaranda, is a tree that bears flowers, it's beautiful!, and the figures made of flowers that Isabela has in her room, are real, if you want to know more about the culture of flowers look for Feria de la Flores, Colombia. I like your reactions, you pay attention to the details, the lyrics of the songs and their message.

Jacarandas are common in SoCal. (Where everybody pronounced them Jack...) You have to be an LA insider to know which Spanish names are anglicized and which are not. Strangling figs grow like a girdle entwining another tree and kill it.

Jacarandas are tropical plants with nice flowers. Tabebuia is the genus of a type of tree that produces pink and yellow blooms Flor de mayo is the common name of Colombia’s National flower Cattleya trianae, an orchid. Palma de cera is the Wax palm tree, an endangered species only found in montane regions of the west of Colombia, and it’s also the National tree.

La palabra jacaranda proviene del idioma guaraní, de la variación tupí específicamente, y su significado puede interpretarse como “de agradable fragancia”. La palabra en tupí es jaracandá y es así como se le conoce a esta planta en algunos países de Sudamérica

It's interesting that you mention how those opening chords sounded like a rock song. A producer reacted to this song and brought up the rock-style halftime section (starting with the line 'can I deliver us a river of sundew', continuing until 'through the root to the sky- let's go!') and other commenters have brought up how the background flowers represent a jumbotron as well as the flower Isabella holds at one point like a microphone. I'm pretty sure this song is intended to emulate a rock song. It's the ideal juxtaposition against the 'perfect and beautiful' aesthetic that was forced onto Isabella. Those chords were very much on purpose.
