A diaphragm wall is a reinforced concrete wall cast into the ground. The principle is to dig a trench, constantly kept full of mud during the excavation, then to pour concrete into it.
Once the work is finished, it serves as a retaining wall, and the materials from the ground on one side of the wall can be excavated, for example to make a trench between two diaphragm walls, which may possibly be covered.
