Diaries of a Wannabe Buck Tracker S1 E2: Giant Buck and Crusty Snow in Greatest Country on Earth

In this episode I am hot on the trail of a true Maine Giant. The conditions are less than desirable after cold temperatures create a loud crust on the hunting grounds in the Jackman, Maine area. The odds were in the Monarchs favor even more than usual. He gave me a great tour of his country and left me off where we started at the end of the day. He was generous enough to allow me a quick peek at his awesome rack, but cunning enough to keep the prize from becoming a reality. This was my favorite tracking adventure without a harvest and will provide great fodder for dreams and anticipation until next time.

Love the title of this series! Been one of the most frustrating seasons ever! New snow couldn’t find a decent track! Weeks of crusty snow etc, etc!! Hit a decent buck, lost him after 2 days and 15 miles when it snowed 6”’s overnight. All you can do is keep at it.. Not a game for quitters! Keep up the good work

Looks like some nice country over there. You can't win them all or there wouldn't be any left. Good luck with the rest of the season. Ice fishing just isn't the same without some deer steak on the fire.

Just moved to maine, my previous state I had success every year. This is my first year empty handed and wow is it humbling. Tracking is tough, a lot of guys make it seem very easy. I’m missing a few pieces to the puzzle and I can’t wait to finally connect them. I didn’t strike out from lack of trying I put on the miles and had a few encounters just couldn’t seal the deal. It may sound weird but it’s encouraging to see other people struggle because most of what you see online is success.

I agree. I mostly do the videos to leave a legacy to my future generations to know what I was like. But there are alot of people that enjoy the realistic struggle and just following the adventure. It's one of the toughest hunts in America for a reason lol

Joe, great meeting you on the holeb road a few weeks back. I saw you picked up a track I was on. I ran into your truck after he crossed the road. Was hoping you got him. I talked Joe and he had not heard if you finished the deal. Bryan

Hey, Joe, out of curiosity, is there a reason you choose to hunt western Maine over the area you live in? I know you hunt both, I’m just curious if you hunt Western Maine because it offers something that the other places don’t.

Good hunt Joe. I think you were bumping a pretty smart old deer. He isn’t going anywhere you can count on him being there in the same spot next year maybe just a little smarter. Don’t know how far you are from your house but I think I would make a few trips this spring and put out a few cameras. Good luck

Good effort Joe. With those snow conditions you know it’s almost impossible. Best you can hope for is to grunt and get him to show some interest and come back but even that is iffy late season. I tracked one this year he took me up and down the isles past the deli, up over a Entanmens donut display and right to the meat dept at Hannafords.

You’re not the only wannabe, Joe. Good to see I’m not the only one that struggles to kill one. 😁 I’ve come SO close the last couple of years. Threw a couple of shots at a big boy this year, but never touched him. Too much brush in the way. It’s a blast, though, with or without a dead deer.

Why didn’t you just wait for him to complete the circle? Save yourself all that huffin and puffin. 😂😂😂. Gotta hate that. I say two guys. One takes track and one sits and waits for him to circle around. Seems like that they do it frequently.
@FBMMaineOutdoorJournal
@FBMMaineOutdoorJournal 10 месяцев назад
Your right! The trick is knowing where the circle will close. I guess with onx and radios you could keep your partner close, but what's the fun in that lol
