Most of those villages were lit afire by the Soviets as they retreated. They burned the crops and structures to deny the German soldier shelter and food. It was Stalin's scorched earth policy.

I just finished reading "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer; one of the best books on war I have ever read. It gives an account of the War in Russia and Ukraine from a soldiers point of view. I don't see how he survived.

I've heard about them in ancient times. The Greek and Roman armies through medieval times. I did not know it was still a thing during WWII, a full time profession following them on the Eastern Front. (EDIT: I did not know what they were called)

I was a Confederate Soldier for 6 years & had to be aYankee occasionally(Civil War Reenactments). There were usually Sutlers among us.

On a small scale. We didn’t rape and purposely kill civilians and burn their villages in the middle of Russian winter. There’s no comparison. Germany and Russia are in a different league when it comes to atrocities.
