Dame Gwyneth in Zurich, not Bayreuth. This was the reopening of Zurich Opera after a complete refurbishment. And Gwyneth was one of the most beloved stars there. Never forgot being there.
Despite the scoops and wobbles, I think Jones is one of the most compelling singers. She’s my desert island artist because there’s always something exciting. I saw her as Brunnhilde, Isolde, Salome, Elektra, Fidelio, the Marschallin, Turandot. All brilliant, as long as you can look past some of the vocal foibles.
