Dick Cavett | The complete Pioneers of Television interview 

Mr. Cavett is four months shy of 88. So grateful his memories are documented here.

Dick Cavett is one of the most interesting human beings. I recall watching his shows as a very young guy and enjoying them immensely. I was a very precocious kid who drove his parents insane by reading encyclopedias for fun and retaining so much information, to their utter horror. Their best plan was to keep buying encyclopedias and a TV for my room to keep me busy and out of their hair. I often watched Mr. Cavett's show, which my parents found intellectual and snobbish, which I couldn't comprehend. They tried to cope with me but were never able to ultimately. I've enjoyed seeing this very much and the old Cavett shows again, they're fascinating time capsules now.

I would have loved more questions about Dick Cavett, than questions about other celebrities. I loved his interview approach during his show.

I love the interviews on this channel and hearing the stories of past icons and influencers of the American culture, a culture that we have unfortunately lost now.

They used to show reruns of his talk shows ABC 69-74, PBS 77-82, USA network for 1 year in the mid 80's, a brief return to ABC 86 ? and CNBC 89-95 on a over the air channel called decades which is now called catchy comedies. I noticed that he would not always do a traditional interview and instead have more of a conversation which you could really get to know a guest. Many times he would only have 1 guest on for 90 mns. on his ABC show and 1 guest for 30 mns on his PBS show. He also tells really interesting stories about his life and career. A lot of these interviews can be found on youtube. They are worth checking out.

When did this interview occur? Did not know he was good friends with JC! Awesome interview. A bit rambling similar to his talk show. Love the sideway thoughts and caveats. I love DC. Not just because we have the same initials. Watched his ABC show nearly every night. I remember I wrote to the show and received 2 tickets for one night, I think it was the month of October of that year. Went with my dad who was in between one of his 3 prison sentences. Almost was seen on TV during a commercial break but some older kids stood up directly in front of me run the row ahead of me. I read DC was an award winning gymnast in school and beginning in college dealt with the challenges of depression. Glad to know he is still alive and hopefully well.

Dick Cavett... It's fun to watch him ponder over what he has just said and make spontaneous edits. Wish he was my friend.

He looks, sounds and acts just the same as his younger self. This is one of those vids that, though long, wasn’t quite long enough. Could listen to him tell stories for hours. Would love to hear him tell more abt his shows with John Lennon, Janice Joplin and the like. Those belong in the Smithsonian (as it were).

Love dick cavett What a great interviewer and interesting man

It's hard to say now, how Dick Cavett was unique among the talk shows, and what an impact he had in the 70s and 80s. Carson was great, but different. Cavett's show was more indepth with guests... more about WHO they were, rather than what the were doing and plugging, though there was some of that. And Cavett knew and appreciated that some guest were historical... and he interviewed them, not as a figure just of the moment, but he did an interview for the ages... and that's why so many of his interviews from 50 years ago are still fun to watch. My regret was that his show was cancelled and he largely faded from the public view... when he should have had a much longer period of providing his style of interviews. He's an interesting and caring individual... and we are all fortunate he rose to having his own show, as long as he did. But it is also true that there can come a time when you are just drained of ideas and even of interest in topics which once excited you.

I remember years ago watching Cavett and thinking just shut up, you talk too much. Oh, how wrong I was. Love you, man.

For Cavett fans, somewhere on the 'tube, you can find "Dick Cavett's Vietnam" and "Dick Cavett's Watergate" (or some such titles). They come from a couple of DVDs (which I have). They are FASCINATING programs!

*I live in Japan, and back in the 1980's the US Information Center had video-tapes of Cavett interviewing "serious writers" like Arthur Miller, Robert Penn Warren and Isaac Bashevis Singer, etc. for PBS. I wish that You-Tube would show these interviews again. I'm don't give a damn about most of these showbiz "celebrities" whose interviews with Cavett they keep on showing.*

he never had a regular show in australia but he would narrate many historical documentary which did appear in australia. We would only really enjoy his historic interviews with youtube.
