Dick Clark interviews Michael McDonald. The audience asks him questions. He talks about his career with The Doobie Brothers and other music artists, doing a duet with his wife, and his recent projects.
I'd be honored if some Michael McDonald fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES and HEART TO HEART (Michael's composition with Kenny Loggins and David Foster) on my YT channel in tribute to the masters of late 70s/early 80s groove. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.
“Drastically.”? His speaking voice is actually deep, pleasant, and gentle. Were you expecting him, or any singer.... to speak like he sings? I think Family Guy answered that already...
Isnt it interesting to see how people use to be modest and polite, TV interviews/interaction with audiences these days is completely different!! Sucks to see how egotistical people have become....
@@HeartOfAn80sGirl Are you saying he has an effect on you that makes you sleepy like Dracula has on his victims when Dracula says children of the night, listen to me. You are getting sleepy. Follow me for you are the UNDEAD !!! Follow myself and Michael McDonald and we will die when the moon comes up. That my child is DEATH !!!!
What a lovely man! I just love him. Such talent vocally and musically. And what a handsome fox he was (and still is). And what a great head of hair. Also hard to believe he is younger than me in this interview!
I'm always astonished at how no one seems to notice how gorgeous Michael is. First and foremost for me is how smooth and beautiful his voice is but the man is absolutely heartbreaking, lol.
@@hazeltyler89 I have thought about this and I've come to the conclusion that pretty much everyone knew he was handsome. it's undeniable. he knew he was handsome but he's just a shy guy
I've loved his voice since I was a little child lying in the back of the station wagon, being dragged around on all those road trips, but now I see what a modest, smoking-hot dude he is and I love him even more. Wowza.
Missing Dick Clark! What a showman, and what a classy guy! He did so much for the music industry, and always so respectful and supportive of the artists he interviewed.
I guess, as long as you ignore the 1960 Payola scandals where he paid $125million (1960 $) in restitution to the artists he'd taken advantage of AND testified against other DJs in order to avoid prison time.
Its funny about the album design (I've produced designs in support of Mike)... he really didn't know what his covers or music videos were about, which for a creative person is kinda of odd. They should be representing something in the music (lyrics) or the man himself but I think in the 80's USA they were all so smacked off their heads they just did a Dali and put anything odd in there to get people's attention - the whackier the better. I asked Mike about the Ya Mo Be There video with James Ingram where they go from being diner cooks, to priests, to being adrift in the sea... he said "Man if you can work it out let me know... I haven't a clue"
OMG!!!! I get to see him live with the Doobie Brothers next Tuesday Oct 19th 2021!!!! I am thrilled. Life long love of him!! Since I was a kid. So much love for him!!! Humble genius
True story. When Patti was making her album and cut the song, Producer thought it would be good to make it a Duet, and asked her, out of everyone in the world, your pick. She said, Michael McDonald. And that is how that happened
All I can say is I know Michael very well, I'm good friend of his brother in law in Nashville. I interviewed him at a veterans charity at the Bruce Cohn Winery with Doobies some years ago. What you see and what you hear is what it is. Amazing career and history and a class A gentleman. RS the Vet.
He’s a great singer. I love all the stuff he’s sang on. His 1982 solo debut is great. No Looking Back is good too but it has terrible artwork! It was rereleased in 1986 with a different sleeve!
When I hear his speaking voice after growing up with his songs...I feel like I'm being pranked or Michael McDonald is messing with me. Love the laid back chill vibe regardless!
4:00 was dude newly sober here? because I've read interviews where he talks about the early to mid 80s and how they were a really bad time for him until he quit drinking in 1985. he was genuinely surprised that he survived those years
@@Faltor895 He seems a bit shy and not sure how to handle himself.. Seems like he's sober here, just getting used to doing interviews without the booze and drugs
Love, love, love this man, first time I heard him it was 'What A Fool Believes', fell in love with his voice and the song &&&- was soooo -easy on the eyes!!!!!!!!!
3:27 I guess you can think of album covers back then like we think of RU-vid thumbnails today. Album covers are kind of like clickbait. If something is interesting or weird on the cover it will make you want to pick it up and look at it.
Ilove the hair and dress styles of the 80s. I remember this period when I was a tennager. We did not care about brands, we expressed ourselves just the way we wanted. Some young cats here clearly influenced by Madonna, Rick Astley and the likes 😊. And good questions 👍🏻
To all of you who love his singing, wait til you see him playing the keyboards on other videos...If you think you are his fan now wait til you see that! what a talented guy. I'm surprised he was not their front man in the early years. who was that lead singer on "Black Water," "Listen to the Music," and the other songs from the "Toulouse Street" "The Captain and Me" and "What were once Vices are now Habits" days? I never knew McDonald was also a great keyboardist.
Tom Johnston was the Primary lead singer on a lot of the early tunes. Pat Simmons is the lead on "Black Water". A joint vocalist/guitarist. Johnston was having stomach ulcers on the road and his health deteriorated rapidly. He had to be emergency flown to a hospital right as they were kicking off a tour. Jeff Baxter who was the third guitaorst in the band at the time suggested Michael McDonald, as they had worked with Steely Dan together, and that is how that happened. McDonald didn't exactly fit the style of the Doobies, but he molded them into a new sound. Everything happened the way it should have. Johnston, Simmons, and many of the replacements returned, and that is the Doobie lineup of today.
I never knew about Nightime, besides the obvious of his shows most of us know of the only other that I remember of out of the turn of the 80's was Inside America..... 🎬🎧
