Dick Grayson was the first robin, after years spent under the tutelage of Batman, he took autonomy, and became Nightwing. After the events of Final Crisis, Batman is apparently died ... Gotham left unprotected.
Nightwing and Robin have done their best, but the city needs a Batman. Dick Grayson becomes then the new protector of Gotham, succeeding the man who can safely call "father." With Damian Wayne (son of Bruce and Talia) at his side, as the new Robin, Dick fought for the ideals of his mentor.
Batman lives ... forever!

Bruce will always be Batman, but having Bruce and Damian teaming up would be such a dark Comic that not even a "heavy metal" guy could stand with that. It was good to have Bruce+Dick and then Dick+Damien. A dark character combined with a more lightly. Dick exists to show us that the world isn't only black or white, he's there to point us that most of the time there's a gray color. That's why he's Dick GRAYson.

Dick was loyal for a LONG time, he just didn't agree with Batman ideology, so he moved out of the bats shadow to become his own hero. But when he took the mantle of bat for the short time, he was changed by Bludhaven a city worse than Gotham he was living in and saving.

Apparently Batman doesn't die in the story "final crisis" the scene in question batman shoots darkseid with the same bullet that killed orion and at the same time darkseid shoots his omega sanction, and after some other stuff happens, superman holds batman's chared body, but its later to be revealed to be a clone. (darkseid had tried to clone batman but couldn't because none of them could handle having the mind of batman). So there you go, batman isn't dead just M.I.A. that's what I read...

Bruce was sent back in time due to Darkseid's Omega Beams. He then traveled through time Quantum Leap Style till he made it home (I think he was picked up by Flash and Superman though... Not 100% sure.)

Dick is not really an upbeat character - he's hopeful, yes. But dude is damaged after losing his parents early, training and working with Batman, being a vigilante, his two rapes, he has lost a lot of friends, he has lost Bruce and other family members and he has done questionable things but through it all, he perseveres. That's will power. That's why he's a shining star.

He dindn't have chose he had to be batman because jason todd lost his mind he said that he was the only one who should be the second Batman(a bad batman with red eyes fighting with guns and a killer) that's why Dick took batman uniforme from him he said to jason that's batman's name should be takken by a justice man not a killer after beating jason alfred asked Dick to take the batman's uniform he agree and he became The new batman with Damian wayme as Robin

In order- 1:Dick grayson who grew up to become Nightwing. 2:Jason Todd who died, reserected and became Red Hood. 3: Tim Drake who grew to become Red Robin. 4: Stephanie brown for a very short span... 5: Damian wayne. Batmans son who was raised with assasins.

@alelreycarri It starts with Batman & Son then goes through Batman RIP, Final Crisis, Battle for the Cowl & Batman Reborn. Then comes The Return of Bruce Wayne and Batman Inc, where Bruce is like semi retired and Dick is the main Batman.

Oh wait did they rewrite the story, well that sucks but you need to read Knightfall it was written shortly after Doomsdayso in the first part you will notice that Batman and Robin are wearing armbands in tribute to Superman's death

I personally don't think Bruce need to die to make nightwing batman, maybe with dick as the batman and Bruce as the brains behind the action, like oracle. Or maybe like in batman beyond. But I don't think the real batman would give the role of batman to some fu*king kid who wants to be batman. It's like a child go to Bruce and said, I want to be batman! And Bruce was like, okey..... That makes no sense, the Bruce Wayne I know don't trust many people, so among the robins, dick is the best choice.

@iJakeMc Maybe, but I still think dick grayson was the p;erfect choice for Batman. @Edward23ex The problem with Jason and Damian being a team is that they probally would kill and that's not what Bruce Wayne was about. I think its good damian has some guidance in Grayson.

(Spoiler) This is just a rumor, but in the Justice League movie Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going to be the new batman. Since they already stated that he is "Robin" they are most likely going to make him skip the nightwing hero phase and have him become batman.

Actually Dick is better, one reason is because Dick is more agile and quicker even stated by Bruce that Dick is quicker and more agile than himself.

I disagree. Don't get me wrong, he's my favourite character to have been Robin, but I think he made a better Nightwing and Batman than he ever did a Robin. Excluding the very early years, he's mostly been Bruce's equal. (Not in a combat ability or an intelligence sense of course, but as a hero. He did a LOT of good as the leader of the Titans and other teams) Tim Drake was my favourite Robin as he fit the best as Bruce's apprentice, with Damian best fitting Dick's Batman.

Dick Grayson is a Better Batman than Bruce ever was. Bruce admits it multiple times in the comics. Bruce when he returned from being MIA in this particular story ended up having Dick stay as Batman in Gotham because Dick was doing more to improve and clean up the streets than Bruce did

If your are wondering when Nightwing took over as in Batman's place , it was in the Battle for the cowl arc , I think Final crisis was before this arc .. Not sure

I read somewhere at that moment he was hit with the omega beam he switched places and that in the other he really did die but the true batman is trapped in space of time....sounds kinda stupid but thats what I heard in a video
