Great video thank you for sharing. Class 73’s have been very versatile over the years! Was surprised how quiet it was in the cab and had initially thought it must of been operating on 3rd rail , clearly that was not the case.

I guess that they no longer have the Weed Killing Train judging by some of that track along the route. What's also sad was that we have, or did have two great railway towns/city and not one freight train and I think it was 1 passenger...... remember the Uttoxeter line renowned for all the great workings and locos but hey...... progress they say, mmmmmmm!

I am Uttoxeter born and bred, i remember the 70's and 80's how busy the Knotty was with all kinds of freight, 25s 31s 37s 47s 58s , it is now criminally under utilised.

I have a question that someone may be able to answer. Upon leaving Crewe the line is single but eventually doubles later on. I wonder why the single section, was it originally so, strange on what I imagine to be a busy line?
@anthonycross4826
@anthonycross4826 Месяц назад
Superb.and very interesting. Many thanks.The section between Stoke junction snd N.Staffs junction looks in part as it needs some TLC. Some queries: Does this route see any freight seeing it runs east-west e.g. to/from E.Mids Gateway? Noticing "x 40" signs on the opposite line and wondering if that means this section operates bi directional working Doing a bit of research I see there's no passenger service between Derby and Crewe on a Sunday until @ 3pm the reason being to only require one "late" shift for the signal boxes- but there seems a mix on the line after Stoke of semaphore and colour signalling- so wondering if that means a better Sunday service is in the offing

Nice to see semaphore distant signals
@dnealuk
@dnealuk Месяц назад
Agreed. I need to dig into how they work in the modern context. Obviously Distant and Home, but looks like you only have the AWS bell for the Distant.
@beneliastrains
@beneliastrains Месяц назад
@@dnealuk Indeed. If the distant is off (at 45 degrees) then all of the stop signals are also off. If the distant is on, any one or more of the box's stop signals could be at danger.

Thanks so much for another nice ride. It seems strange that that section of around 3m from North Stafford Jn to Barthomley Jn should be singled, when obviously the route used to be double. But is that because of concern that the embankment along part of that route would be too expensive to maintain to the full width to support doubling, and the amount of traffic no longer warrants the cost? It did look a little narrower in places than it might originally have been.
@randallfletcher1657
@randallfletcher1657 Месяц назад
Stability of some of the embankments in that area was poor so the line was moved to use the centre of same. This was done in the mid 1980's.

A nice video. The weather was perfect: no rain, slightly overcast, not too much sun. A very pleasant route and engine sound. Unfortunately, for me, it was spoiled by the continuous high frequency ringing noise that sounded like a car or house alarm. I tried hard to screen it out without success. At least I can appreciate that I don't have tinnitus.

Is the Stoke lines not used frequently or just poorly maintained, there is more weeds between the running lines than beside. Also the non use of train whistle between 7pm and 6am would be illegal here, the whistle must be used at all times, including departure from a station, express through a platform and at all xings.

Automatic warning system indicating a green signal ahead
@mrvwbug4423
@mrvwbug4423 Месяц назад
That is the "clear signal" indicator for the AWS system, it's a bell like that on older trains. On modern Uk trains it's a single "ding". but every signal has a magnet between the rails 150 yards before the signal and the bell goes off if the signal is green, or a will set off a buzzer if the signal is yellow or red to indicate to the driver that a non-clear signal is ahead.

They need the weed killer train on the uproad and also clear away the free and vegetation next to the signals as some were hardly visible and at least 2 the driver in no way had 8 seconds clear view. Pathetic how network rail try to save money. The drivers should refuse to take the train on safety grounds.
@12crepello
@12crepello Месяц назад
I don't think NR can use weedkiller trains anymore due to environmental concerns? I could be wrong but I haven't seen one for a long time on any line I have been near.

Network Rail aren’t allowed to deveg without obtaining a licence from the local authority and if the there’s any newts, dormice or otters, they aren’t allowed to touch it at all, even on their own land.
