www.DickProenneke.com - "Alone in the Wilderness" is the story of Dick Proenneke living in the Alaska wilderness. Dick filmed his adventures so he could show his relatives in the lower 48 states what life was like in Alaska, building his cabin, hunting for food and exploring the area. Bob Swerer has taken the best footage from Dick's films and he has created 3 videos about Dick, "Alone in the Wilderness", "Alaska, Silence and Solitude" and "The Frozen North". You can purchase all of them in DVD or VHS format from the www.DickProenneke.com website.

I spent about 5 months alone in a cabin out in B.C. when I was about 20. Unless you have experienced something like that there is no way to explain what the ALONE part of the experience means. It can and would drive most people crazy. I started to hear and see things that weren't there. Especially at night. I could tell you some stories you wouldn't believe. It's called "cabin fever" and it's very real. This man is extraordinary to have been able to live like this. Kudos to him.

He has a great eye for his camera, and his commentary is educating, warm, inviting and to the point. He really knows how to put together a good documentary. I totally agree except the narrator is not the guy on the show. he is reading his journals. the hole documentary is an hour or so. it plays on our local public access channel from time to time and I bought the DVD for about $15 (amazon I think) rather than the $300 "donation" to get "the wgvu/wgvk travel mug, the tote bag, the day planner, an alarm clock, a year subscription to cat fancy, and some other shit you don't really want but we included so we don't look like total assholes for wanting $300 damn dollars for a DVD or vhs"

Read his stuff, very interesting and compelling. He continued to evolve as a man too. Became much more conscious. He saw that we live much too heavily on the land and that the great gift that we've been given of this planet and this life are basically ignored in favor of ambition. I hesitate to say much more and color Dick with my own thinking, but reading his journals and reflections is really worth while.

While you point is valid it, sadly, no longer applies. As an American, you are only allowed to be a moron who operates within the narrow boundaries of what's legal. Going out in the woods, building yourself a cabin, hunting, fishing and gathering for survival breaks so many fucking laws these days that going out like that for a year would likely land your ass for much longer in a state / fed penitentiary. Hell, there isn't much of nature remains where you'd be allowed to even stay overnight, unless it's some lame campground packed with Walmartians. Coke to Russia, bro, despite the popular propaganda, we're actually living up to much more freedom than US residents could only dream of in the past 25 or so years.

At least by watching this type of video, it allows a person to store some vital information. There could come a time when you could fall back on some even basic tasks that you learned by viewing. Of course, nothing takes the place of actual experience. I kind of knew how to connect the logs by making notches, but I would not have thought of using river stones for the foundation and flooring. And just as mentioned in another persons reply, I would like to have a dog with me.

I believe this is part of the hour long show I saw on PBS television a few years ago. They added some sound over the chopping, sawing, etc. Most all the footage was taken with an 8mm movie camera set up on a tripod, as you can see the camera is not moving. Some of the panning shots were taken by Dick and the rest was taken by the pilot who flew him food and necessary supplies. I have taken 12 trips to the "Alaskan Bush" and know just how hard and lonely it must have been. I am so glad this film was saved for all generations.

I know this feeling. My father worked in the maintenance department of a very large production factory. He died at 73 and at his funeral, I met a lot of his old coworkers for the first time. Old, leather-skinned, slightly hunched, soft-spoken, but with vise-like handshakes. They could fix anything that breaks. They had good stories and honest faces. In the office where I work, you're lucky to meet a guy who changes his own oil.
@tonyvei7830
@tonyvei7830 10 лет назад
yeah i hear that, this man is old school, they grew up in a time period where you didn't get on the phone and call up a repair man, you were him! -- and now days people have to learn how to be resourceful or you better make a lot of money, this kind of confidence never hurts anyone.
@tonyvei7830
@tonyvei7830 10 лет назад
It's not me you have to convince, it's yourself! as a rule, theory sound good on paper, in daily practice within the physical world the flaw becomes obvious. I believe,if your confident enough of a person your capable to do and over come anything, I would like to add to this topic and open it up. But at the moment, I just don't have the time. possibly I will pick this up a later time. until then, Yeah, go knock yourself out!
@cogitaretoo
@cogitaretoo 10 лет назад
***** Well, of course not. I'm a field geologist, so I spend 80% of my time outside. However, most of the office staff of my company are amazed at the fact that I do my own home repairs, change my own oil, fabricate jigs to make tasks easier, and know how to fell a tree with an axe. None of these are intrinsically impressive skills; these guys just have low expectations for working with their hands.

Alot of people let society scare them into thinking they can't live far from modern hospitals. Most of us were fortunate enough to be born healthy and will stay healthy if we take care of ourselves. I think it's important to never rush when working. I've only been badly hurt when I was rushing.

MrHestichs, I am in Tampa Bay region of Florida USA but I was taught by my Father who renovated houses about 60 years ago. When I was Young.(From age 6 to age 24.) In almost every region individuals build cabins, log houses, and other structures. Buy a book (I have read dozens) and hire a builder (Pay him to be a Friend and tracher) to build a small cabin with the agreement that you may help.Then add onto it yourself the next year. Do all you can yourself and hire others to do what you can not, and watch and learn. You have to invest your time to learn. and sometimes you save some money depending upon how much you actually do. The last house I built I was the designer, and the general contractor and It cost only half as much to build because that is what the general contractor's profit is. Half the total cost ! But I learned the basics of masonry, bricklaying, plastering, carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring and roofing from my Father.

rick hctep He cut down all those logs a year before he built the cabin, sure it would've made cutting the logs to the right length easier, but he would still have to chisel them to fit. So, a chainsaw really only makes cutting a tree down easier and a man of his stature and skill has no need for a chainsaw.
@celluskh6009

Shay McQuaid i’m a 15 year old female. i know how to change the oil in a car, some basic mechanics, etc.; how to grow my own flowers and foods like green beans, tomatoes, okra, and zucchini squash; how to cook just about anything; how to mow the lawn; do my laundry; use power tools. i often go backpacking and have been on a few solo trips- i know how to start a fire and set up camp along with basic survival skills. this being said, i only know how to do these things because my dad and mom taught me how growing up. most people can’t simply because nobody ever taught them how- it’s not their fault. it’s just how society has changed. i live in a recently suburbanized area in the south, so that is simply still the culture around here for some people (while most of my friends were never taught these things).don’t harp on people that were simply never taught or were never in a situation where, say, changing a tire was necessary- heck, i don’t even know how to change a tire...
