Major Dick Winters views John D. Shaw's painting "Hang Tough, Bastogne 1944", which depicts the Band of Brothers paratroopers of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, for the first time.
Many viewers have asked how to get an art print of the painting shown in this video. Good news - we've got a couple still available hand-signed by Easy Company paratroopers at: ValorStudios.com
RIP Major Winters. He is well known in Germany till today. He and many other soldiers didnt only fight for their country but furthermore they fought against the Nazi Regime for a free and liberal Germany as well. As a citizen of Germany i wanna thank those who made this possible. It is the first time in German history without a war in Europe or any tensions with other surrounded nations. It is a great time in history and i am thankful for that.
Every time I see something about Dick Winters, I ask myself if we have really done enough to create a world deserving of the sacrifice of him and men like him.
In Afghanistan, a Company of the 101st was doing rapid reaction missions. As they flew out to a hot site, a Taliban radio mesage was intercepted. It stated very simply, "Don't fight these guys. They have Eagles on their sleaves." I like to believe that the older 101st vets would be proud of that. Respect to all veterans of all wars...
Even though I didn't know the man personally...I cried the day Dick Winters died. I think it's because something died with him. We shall never see the likes of him or of his comrades, ever again.
I have studied World War ll for 48 years , The history, the major battles ,and the principal leaders who fought and won it, . As with most students of this epic era , I have developed an appreciation for their courage, leadership, and loyalty to duty. Major Dick Winters epitomizes the BEST, as a man, a soldier, a humanitarian,a leader, AND to a grateful nation , an ETERNAL HERO. God bless his memory, family and friends.
Found a place, settled down, and spent the rest of his life in peace. May God please bless your soul as you rest in peace. to you and all the allied veterans and servicemen (past and present) THANK YOU.
My dad I lost this year, in 2012. He was an immigrant, but became a citizen immediately upon coming to our shores. He taught me to value my freedom and liberty bought at the price of men and women like Dick Winters. I know they fought for each other, primarily, but surely they knew that their efforts would secure for the world a bit more human dignity, no? "Gracias", Dick Winters on behalf of my late father and his son--now a father as well. You helped make the world better for my daughter.
RIP Major Winters, you and your boys are eternally American heroes. These men were cut from a different cloth, and reading about the men who fought in the battle of the budge always makes me so damn proud to be an American. These men were the beacon of hope for the world at one point in time, and they never even knew it because they were humble beings. To the greatest generation who had ever lived, may all those great soldiers who fought for freedom rest gracefully in peace.
Agreed! I don't get it. This man was a leader of men. He did it by example, not by sitting in the command bunker (well until he was forced to!) God bless him - RIP.
They were among the bravest that ever lived. All... that served during WWII are my heroes. Airborne did not only lead the way, they also stayed with other combat entities helping to "Hold the Line" Men like these can never be replaced.
So much respect and admiration for this man. I just watched Band of Brothers for the 10th time last night. Rest Easy, Major Winters. So much respect towards you and your brothers.
I love 0:45. "Wild Bill...naturally." and then he laughs. You can tell he had trouble reading his handwriting back in the day as well. That is such an amazing painting.
I could feel his memories rolling out of his heart & soul as he gazed on that painting for the first time. My Dad was a WW2 veteran and I remember the few times he spoke of the war...a generation of reluctant heroes.
Major Winters , you passed away some time ago BUT you're bravery, leadership, compassion AND friendship of your men will live on forever. A true leader who never forgot about his men and their welfare ! Thank you for your service Sir ! RIP !
Great Man, Humble beyond Belief. This world is a lesser place without him and the men he commanded . RIP you deserve to meet your men who never came home.
This man and his brother's got me and my platoon through alot of tough times in Iraq. I wish I could've met him so I could thank him for his inspiration he gave me through alot of hard days and nights in the Infantry. Mission first sir!
I am 26, my bucket list included meeting this man, sadly, I will never check that one off, he is one of my heroes and I hope to one day go to his grave and pay my respects, and I want a copy of that painting
I would love to pay my respect to this man , i,m planning to fly across the atlantic to do so comming spring .. My salute from a Dutch Veteran 11th Dutch air aussault
let me know when you come over, would be an honor to stand with you and pay respects at your side. and hear about your service. will even give you an American military patch and IR US flag patch.
Man I would have loved to have met Dick Winters and gotten him to sign his war memoir "Beyond Band of Brothers"...much respect to the man who led Easy Company from Normandy to Holland. RIP Major Winters.
I have been a WW2 buff and historian all my life since i was a kid....and to see this man knowing what a superb leader and soldier he was and the rest of his men gives me goosbumps...i recently restored my 1942 willys jeep and i dedicated it to Dick Winters and easy company...the restoration is on my channel and the finished product.!
There is a real attachment that happens between a company commander and his men. You are only a company commander once. It is often called the greatest job in the Army. When Dick Winters is looking at those names, he is reading the names of his men. They will always be his men.
His actions and those of all the allied soldiers are still remembered, i am danish and would have been speaking german if it were not for all those sacrifices. Respect and honor from Denmark.
Major Richard Winters is and will forever be remembered as the perfect personification of the "American Citizen Soldier". There was no doubt in the mind of Adolph Hitler that his professional army would crush any opposition sent against his German war machine. From Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, France, to the Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps, the men of Easy Company followed Dick Winters with the confidence and loyalty born of his unwavering love and respect for the men under his command. At Bastogne, Belgium, the 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division; ordinary men performing extraordinary feats under impossible circumstances.
I could see Major Winters going right back to those woods, and I could not stop the tears! The things he and Easy Company saw and did there is beyond our ability to comprehend.
In February of 2002 I wrote Mr Winters a letter and sent it to his Hersey PA address and about a month later to my surprise I received an envelope from him containing a signed military magazine and a personal letter written to me on the back of the “Band of Brothers” HBO series flyer/advertisement. It hangs on my wall till this day. What a gentleman. RIP.
This is a nice painting for anyone who has seen or read "Band of Brothers", those episodes in Bastogne were incredible. Thank you WWII vets for everything you did. RIP Dick Winters a true hero
This generation of these brave men will never be duplicated. I love the Band of Brothers series. Thank you to them for sacrificing so much so generations could live free. God bless them and keep them.
America certainly has a right to be forever proud of this true, American hero and the men that fought with him, as does the whole world. Major Winters, I bow to you gracefully. R.I.P with your fallen brothers.
Major Winters....thanks for what you did not just for your nation, but what you did for the whole free world. I am in the UK, and I cannot thank you and your brothers enough for travelling half way around the world and sacrificing so much to ensure that I live in a free and democratic country today. I salute you sir, and all the brave men who served alongside you in the war.
Yesterday I was eating and enjoying life with friends in a restaurant in Bastogne. It’s just possible thanks to these greats man. Thank you from Belgium 🇧🇪🇺🇸
We owe so much to these men, truly. You hear it so much it can sound cliche, but it is anything but. When you see the portrayals on screen it's terrifying. And when you really, truly ponder and realize how terrifying it would have been for these guys, there are no words. To those from this generation that fought, thank you.
This is simply,..EXTRAORDINARY!!. A wonderful gesture and a more than deserved tribute to major Winters and the whole Easy company from artist John D. Shaw!. Bravo !
Thank you Major Winters for everything you’ve done for this country and my family. You are without a doubt the greatest generation. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
It is awesome that they honored Major Winters. He was an extraordinary person and led his men well during the war. All of the men that fought by his side were great heroes.
Awesome..."I'm the only guy that shaved"!! Even in those unbelievably inhospitable circumstances, he still wanted/needed to set the example. A true leader of men. RIP Major Winters, if there is an afterlife, you deserve a seat at the head table!!
Thank God for people like Major Winters or we'd all be talking German now, a Big Thanks from a Grateful Scot to all the Allied Soldiers who did there bit for our freedoms.
Its odd to think that for us, its a picture and a thought of what we've seen from movies/shows etc, but for Major Winters its a part of his history, while we see it from a 3rd person point of view, he has memories of it there, what it was like, how it felt. I find it amazing how people like Major Winters, those in the past and those now, can go to war, do what they do for their countries and see what they see, and come home and live normally, it astounds me (In a good way, don't see this as negative, and yes I'm aware theres no actual definition for 'normal' living)
Rest in Peace, Sir... such a great man, I went to visit Foy, was totally amazing .. Majors Winters statue was so awesome. If you ever want to see something neat take the Band of Brothers tour. It was worth the trip.
How can there be a single thumbs down to this wonderful vid. Major Dick Winters and his men were the bravest of the brave and by God we owe them everything for our tomorrows!
When they jumped before D-Day Winters wasn't in charge of Easy company. The leader was killed and that thrust Captain Winters in charge of Easy. He didn't ask for it. What A wonderful wonderful man.
The artist is amazing. I served in peacetime (Cold War) in Germany. I've trained in the snow and ice and sub-zero temperatures...out in the woods for weeks. The colors, lighting, and textures captured in that painting are amazingly accurate. I can almost feel the frostbite and hypothermia...BRRRRR!
You can almost see it. The moment that painting flipped; all the sounds all the images of Bastogne..... all the memories of his friends, rushing back to him in that moment
Dick Winters you are the definition of The Greatest Generation. God bless you and all of the greatest generation. Maternal grandfather served in Japanese theater. Paternal granfather European theatre.
I read a book about US Navy SEALS conducting combat operations in Vietnam. The author wrote of his experiences in the SEALS and he wrote about the professionalism and bravery of the 101st Airborne paratroopers in Vietnam. Major Winters and his men are the part of the history and tradition of the Screaming Eagles and set the standard for all future paratroopers.
R.i.p. Major because of gentlemen like him we can breath a little easier what sacrifices they made and with eamence breaveness my respect to him and his fam. From Los angeles I always let any one I know of this and all the freedom fighters that have perished.
Videos like this are incredible, I can't imagine there is a lot of candid footage of Major Winters out there. Thank you for this. Awesome painting too.
