In 1999, DEC's Bureau of Television and Photography captured an interview in Helen Ellett, a former forest fire observer. She worked in the Dickinson Hill Fire Tower on the Rensselaer Plateau from 1943 to 1965. This newly edited video contains a few of her stories during her time at the tower working for what was then called the Conservation Department.
Helping with the interview was Dick Gibbs. He worked at DEC for many years and would later lead an effort to restore the fire tower through Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park. In 2012, the restored tower was opened to visitors of Grafton Lakes to enjoy the same view Helen Ellett saw for many years as an observer.
