In this video (#SHORTS), Dr. Laby describes the "bloody eye" that Thibaut Courtois suffered - explaining what it is (a subconjunctival hemorrhage) and its effect on vision as well as expected course and recovery as well as a treatment option. Subconjunctival hemorrhages are fairly common and can occur out of the blue as well as following trauma, coughing, or eye rubbing. It is caused by a small blood vessel that breaks under the clear outer layer of the eye, called the conjunctiva, trapping blood between that layer and the next layer below, the sclera. Although it often looks very nasty, fortunately, it doesn't usually cause any harm to the eye or to vision. The hemorrhage usually resolves on its own and doe snot require any treatment, although some use artificial tears for relief of symptoms associated with the raised conjunctiva from the underlying blood.
Courtois suffered a subconjunctival hemorrhage in 2016, which fortunately fully resolved allowing him to return to form and to continue to perform exceptionally.
