Did amending soil for pumpkins actually do anything?

Hey guys, today I'm showing you how the amendments I added last fall have turned out so far. I show you what the soil looks like and what the soil test I did shows. I hope you enjoy the video. Here's a link to my video on what I added last fall.

Hey guys, I am slightly nervous about the results from the soil tests, but I guess we'll see this summer if everything turns out good. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.

Even if I didn’t know much about farm work, I think you put alot of thoughts into your video, appreciate it very much. Hope I can see some good healthy pumpkins from you soon 😊

Thank you for saying that. I really do want to share something worth someone's time. I hope you and I both have great gardens this year. Thanks for watching.

Jon, that soil looks incredible! Great tilth-nice and crumbly. You’ve come a long way with your amendments. As far as the PH…you might consider getting a laboratory soil test. I watched a video right after yours..from Hoss Tools. They had a soil scientist explaining soil tests. She said that the home tests usually register a higher (alkaline) reading because most people’s drinking water is alkaline. At the lab, the first thing they do is dry the sample completely, and the tests they do are very accurate.

Thanks for the compliment on the soil. I think it got a lot better. I don't think I've mentioned it in my videos, but I do let the soil dry out, I don't use tap water, I use drinking water from the store. I very well could be wrong about manure raising the pH. Maybe it is time to send some samples to a lab. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.

I’ve been researching and found that adding peat moss lowers PH as well and it helps with the clay soil issue too

It does, I've used it on my blueberries. But I'm kind of skeptical about how long it lasts for lowering pH. Thanks for the comment.

I’ve noticed the beds that I’ve added manure to are higher in PH as well. I’m adding sulpher this week even tho it will take a few months to make an actual change

Thanks for sharing that. I didn't add any garden sulfur to where I'm planting the pumpkins. It might be something I do in the future. Thanks for the comment.

The soil looks pretty loose. You have me very curious about the soil test. We have never done one here.

The ones I use aren't super accurate, but they'll get you in the ballpark, and they're fairly inexpensive. I like using them to check pH more than anything. Good to hear from you.

About the pig manure potentially raising your PH…here’s my theory-adding organic matter in general should tend to push anyone’s soil towards neutral. Everything in nature is supposed to compost towards neutral. I sent a soil test in last week. My original test I did on my soil was from 2018-and the PH was 6.6. I’ve been adding organic matter since then, and if my theory is true I should see a slight raising of my PH on the new test. I’ll let you know when I get the results. In your case, you already have alkaline soil, and the manure seems to be raising it. Have you done your home test on just the manure? You could send it to the lab for analysis…

You are very correct, I've said it in several videos. Organic matter should fix soil deficiencies. That's why I was surprised by the high pH. I actually did all three tests twice because I was worried I had made a mistake. Maybe it is time for some professional soil test. Thanks for sharing.

you need to account for everything you put into and/or on the soil - really everything including the hay or whatever that's on top of the soil in the video background and all else you put down. you certainly did a good job breaking up the soil but all that manure can be too much - manures are usually packed with N, P, and K and sooner or later that will become a problem. balance you see. soil tests are not all the same. you need to know what your soil test kit is testing. more precisely, what is it showing? is it showing what is immediately available, then those very high numbers, including for nitrogen could become bad news. in the end, you judge by your results - healthy or unhealthy plants - taste and smell is a good test. are your practices guided by the soil test? if you can afford a Logan Lab report with recommendations, i can just about assure you your garden will grow real nutrition if you follow the recommendations...blessings to all

Paul, I think you're right. You and other people have suggested getting a professional soil test done. But please understand that the way I garden and what I'm trying to show people is to have fun and enjoy gardening. I want to show people they can try new things and if it doesn't work it's not the end of the world. While I agree with pretty much everything you said, all I really want to do is get people to start gardening and stay with it. After that, if someone chooses to get really in-depth, there's not a thing wrong with that. Thanks for sharing, and I do appreciate the advice.

@@jonbussey5353 wonderful. clay is a problem with our soil and your results are great. i suggest that being able to promise high nutrition is an additional incentive to go into gardening...blessings

Paul, thank you for the suggestion. After reading your comment, I realized I really don't talk about the health benefits of eating homegrown foods. Thanks for the great comment. I hope you have a blessed day !
