On Thursday, the UN released its much-anticipated report on labour camps in Xinjiang, assessing claims of abuse against Uyghur Muslims and other ethnic minorities which China denies. So what’s actually in the report, and how the CCP might respond?

This reminded me of my past discussions with a variety of people on the Xinjiang topic. I was very astonished by how indifferent most Muslims I encountered were towards the oppression of Uyghurs. Some even supported the CCP's extreme policies (in contrast to the Chinese who tend to simply deny those crimes). Even to this day I still can't wrap my head around why so few Muslims support the Uyghurs and leave their Islamic brethrens alone in their own struggle. As far as I've been seeing, the strongest support for the Uyghurs come from the Turks, followed by westerners. Ironically, even atheists and Christians show more advocacy for the Uyghurs than Muslims do.
@Western_Decline
@Western_Decline Год назад
It's simple actually. If you're Muslim, and the US has been bombing your nations and torturing your people for generations, and now Kaucasian faces are leading the efforts to criticize China about Muslim rights, Muslims can't help but laugh and feel disgusted at such dishonest behavior.
@ArawnOfAnnwn
@ArawnOfAnnwn Год назад
That's cos the topic is politically charged in the west, not so in the ME. To Muslims the deaths of nearly a quarter of million Afghans and half a million Iraqis is a bigger deal than the possible deaths of a few thousand Uyghurs, simply because the former are larger numbers of victims (over which there's shockingly no international hue and cry) and much closer to home. The ME has a long and bitter history with the west, it mostly doesn't with China.
@AeneasGemini
@AeneasGemini Год назад
@@ArawnOfAnnwn I think it's the latter part of your argument that's true, not so much the former. At the end of the day I think ordinary Muslims would be outraged at the thought of fellow Muslims being harvested for their organs by the thousands. The reality is though, that it's not in the interest of the political leaders of the ME to attack China (whereas it is to attack America). China supports many horrific ME regimes, so their misdeeds are hidden from the ordinary Islamic public.
@ArawnOfAnnwn
@ArawnOfAnnwn Год назад
@@AeneasGemini That organ harvesting claim has never been conclusively proven, which is why this UN report doesn't back it either. Indeed any large scale deaths haven't been backed up, only large scale incarceration and some discriminatory policies. That may not matter in the West, where most people are quite ready to believe it anyway, but it does matter in the ME, where precisely because it keeps getting parroted by western media, they're less willing to believe in it. In the West China is a demon that can be guilty of any kind of atrocity because it's an autocratic regime and those are alien and highly demonized, but elsewhere such regimes are more relatable (even if not liked), and accusations against them by the West are less trusted due to a relatably bad history with it. They even need to preface their genocide accusation with the qualifier 'cultural' precisely because they aren't able to find enough deaths. Meanwhile the wests' wars aren't considered genocides, but they sure have huge death tolls. That contrast is not lost on the people living in the region. They don't love or hate China, it's just a business partner. That is not how they feel about the west. And btw, the US is far more involved supporting those "horrific ME regimes", going back decades. China just buys their oil, the US is involved diplomatically, economically and even militarily (literally arming and propping up their govts. across the region). As an illustration, Saudi Arabia's nearly decade long war in Yemen didn't just have US support, the US itself was involved there until a few years ago. What changed their stance? Not the plight of the poor Yemenis. No, it was the murder of ONE WSJ i.e. American journalist. And even then, now that oil prices are sky high thanks to the war in Ukraine, they're back to courting the Saudis again. Even Europe, while trying to paint itself as standing up to Russian autocracy, is now courting an even more autocratic regime in Azerbaijan for oil + gas. And so on. The rest of the world doesn't see the West through the rose-tinted glasses it likes to see itself through. For the people of the ME all that matters is that China isn't messing around in their nation, but the West has been doing so for decades.

Better than asking the question "Are they committing genocide" (the answer to which is obviously yes), or looking at the politics of the situation (When everybody knows the situation is: "The world knows, but nobody acts") would have been doing an in-depth look at each area of our Human rights that these violations are taking place. A reminder that just because TL;DR News is apolitical doesn't mean they can't take an active role and not a passive one in the reporting of facts; a lot of the content in this video was just TL;DR repeating word-for-word what politicians and reports have already said, a lense which ultimately dulls the impact of these violations and contributes further to that global situation of "everybody knows, nobody acts".

Question: Will this change anything ? Answer: No.
@bauetie1787
@bauetie1787 Год назад
Well, nothing will change if we remain apathetic and self-defeatist. But if We the People tapped into our power the way the US Civil Rights movement did to end legal segregation in the US, the way the World boycotted South Africa, which eventually released Nelson Mandela after 27 years in jail and ended apartheid, and the way Western citizens pressured their companies to exit Russia after its illegal invasion of Ukraine. Too many of us ignorantly use Chinese products without thinking of the tacit support we provide the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to oppress its people, commit “crimes against humanity” as stated in the UN report, bullies its neighbors in the South China Sea, threaten independence Taiwan, and, in general, be a danger to world peace. We can stop using Til Tok, stop buying Huwaei, Xiaomi and other Chinese products, which are stolen Western intellectual properties anyway. We can start/keep supporting Taiwan, start pressure our governments to disengage with China, start a campaign to persuade our companies to get out of China, especially those who purport to have ESG policies (remind them genocide is inconsistent with those policies), start/keep sharing stories about China’s atrocities with our families, friends and asking them to join us to petition our governments and companies to boycott China, start calling the CCP on its propaganda, start being a voice for our Chinese brothers and sisters who are silenced and persecuted. That’s OUR Power. I now check labels and tags for “Made in China.” I use a plugin on Amazon that shows where a brand and a seller are located. I no longer buy anything from China as I do not want to support its murderous regime. I’ve been emailing companies to ask them to divest from China. I’ve petitioned my national and local representatives to confront China on its genocide of the Uyghurs. Before this year, I had never ever commented on any RU-vid video, but I’ve been increasingly more vocal in my opposition to the atrocities committed by China and Russia. So, though your question may have been rhetorical, there’s a lot that you yourself can do, if you are so inclined, to force China to change its policy, or, at least, not reward the thugs and criminals of the CCP.

I'm glad the UNHRC had the courage to investigate Xinjiang and publish their report in the face of China's pressure. I can't say anything here was surprising, but even so it's going to be harder to brush off now that it's coming from a somewhat neutral party like the UN. What I'm more surprised by, from the news about Xinjiang, is how quiet Islamic and ethnically turkic nations are. I mean I understand their are political and economic concerns to be considered, but I'm 100% sure if the US had increased the size and severity of Guatanemo Bay places like Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt would be throwing a massive FIT any chance they got about it. But since it's China, no one there has anything to say? Not even neighboring Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan?? Kinda unfair if you ask me...

Depends on your definition of institutionalized torture. And before people jump on me from either bent, frakly we already had proof of mass torture 'in my eyes'. For exampe literal proof when the Chinese gave a *guided tour* (so perhaps the literally best possible accommodations) of a 'vocational education facility'. Bare cement slab floors, 6 bunk beds to maybe a 3 x 7m cells, externally locked doors. It's literally a prison cell. And literally one of the worst prison cells I've ever seen short of an Egyptian black site facility. Speaking of torture and CIA affiliated interests ... Maybe, you know, we should all lead by example? Nonetheless... That counts as 'proof of mass torture' in my eyes on its own. So we already had proof of institutionalized torture 'in my eyes'--Literally from a guided tour of a Chinese re-education camp. And people being set there for non-crimes anywhere else in the world. They were denied mobility rights on the basis of these non-crimes. There is razor wire fences surrounding them. Armed guards. Externally locked doors. Denied basic religious freedoms. And these people had done nothing to deserve these facilities foisted upon them. IMO no prisoner anywhere of anything deserves to live in the cells I saw in the footage. They are, to put it bluntly, dehumanizing conditions. The problem is whether it counts as torture in the *PRC's* eyes ....

It’s not so much about genocide or cultural eradication, because the CCP treats the lives of all its citizens, Han or otherwise, with the same level of total disregard. That being said, low key racism towards ethnically turkic Chinese is quite common within Han communities, as even the lowest dung farmer of Henan would look down at what he’d categorize as “heretic, violent terrorists” with disdain (and a weird sense of superiority). So the poor Uyghurs are literally being bullied by the bullied, on top of being stomped in the face by the CCP’s boot.

It's very good that you are confused. It just means you use your brain. Do look at that report itself, there are fun gems in it. For example it was customary for uyghur religious women to get married very early and have to bear child one after another without any birth control. Now there is education, crack down on extreme forms of religion, work on the other end of the country, and guess what: less children born. Now act suprised. International law requires states to allow parents to have children responsibly. Chinese did just that. It's in the report you just have to read it and draw your own conclusions based on data. When sampling out of 1.800.000, 26 of it isn't a representative sample. But this isn't rocket science, basic statistics, if you anyway go ahead and draw conclusions out of it it's nothing short of a lie. Chinese lie, the UN lie. Go get data, and if someone self incriminates with it, you may trust it.
