Did Disney Princesses really need the update? | A look at the Classics

I had been recently re-watching the animated Disney classics that enveloped my childhood, like Mulan, Cinderella and the Little Mermaid of which I had good, but slightly vague memories from. As I kept watching these movies I started realizing something... The classic Disney Heroines were already quite progressive for their time, they were strong, capable and frankly Badasses! Which got questioning the narrative behind the reason for all these recent Disney Remakes. So that's what I'll be exploring in this video.
Hope you like the video, leave me your thoughts down below in the comments!

If it's so important to Disney to have more rounded, strong and proactive princess characters, they don't need to go backward and repaint all the old ones like Cinderella, Snow White, etc(most of whom were fine for their time and actually still hold up better as characters than a lot of people think). Just keep making good new ones like Moana and Elsa. If you're so progressive, then actually make progress, as in moving forward instead of trying to all but revise history.
@ivillu
@ivillu 15 дней назад
Exactly. You put it perfectly. Moana is a diverse strong female character, and she is just as beloved as any of the classic princesses, proving that when they do it right no one has a problem with any of that. People just want to be entertained and not preached at by condescending people. "Revise History" I really do believe that's the real goal here. It's not money and it's not because they "care" about marginalized groups or whatever their claim is.

@@ivillu It’s more like trying to fix their image so that they keep up with the current times, but in the process of doing so, they’re destroying their roots, and nobody should forget their roots no matter how scandalous. Walt had his beliefs, so what, he was a man of his time, but that will never change the fact that he was a dreamer, an artist and a businessman, and by combining all of that, he created one of if not the most important animation studio in the world.

@@ivillu The 2015 remake isn't much better either ... It's much better than the 2021 version,but doesn't compare with the original 1950 film ( no matter how hard some people try to gaslight us to believe it ) ... It does many things wrong in the writing, like making the Stepmother NOT make a bargain with Cinderella, Cinderella makes a dress anyway and is surprised when they " slightly " tear it ...😂😂😂😂 It tried to do Ever After but had zero understanding of how Ever After worked . The prince has more screen time and that's much easier to do in live action than in animation, especially in the late 1940's ( in the original the prince was the biggest obstacle for the animators hence the reduced screen time ), and that's the biggest " improvement " the remake did that people that like it harp on about even though the additional material creates a whole set of problems in the story later down the line ,the Stepmother has a very unnecessary tragic backstory that goes nowhere, Cinderella is supposedly much stronger but makes zero efforts to escape the room she's locked in ( in the case of the remake for more that a few days ... ) ,scenes that were properly set up and well paced in the original are rushed and come out of the blue in the remake ( the Stepmother somehow finds the slipper and Cinderella's true identity ) I could go on and on about the flaws it has, and though not visually as atrocious as the Amazon version ( complete eyesores ) the costume designs are all over the place and incoherent ( the step family dresses very mid 20th century while Cinderella's ball gown is very 1860's inspired and the servants and godmother dress like 1770's , while Cinderella's parents look very early 1800's and the prince loosely 19th century-esc ... ) Visual cohesion in a film I believe is very important and the original animated film had a way more consistent look as well as a much better script, in the remake the guy knows she's a servant yet tries the slipper on upper class woman way higher than her rank ( she met him in the woods in her servant attire , and at the ball confirmed she was the girl from the woods,he also knew her name ) some of whom are of a completely different ethnic background 🙄 ... It pretends to have a more proactive heroin,yet the way she's portrayed makes her come off as an airheaded doormat who always smiles like she's stoned 😂😂😂😂😂 One of the least bad ,but not good by any means ,the colours are also sometimes overly garish and oversaturated

@@alexp.d3689 If the 1950 film was live-action, it's be one of the laziest _Cinderella_ films in existence. The amount of shortcuts they took because animation is expensive and time-consuming is astounding. I noticed that people who criticize the 2015 film not copying the 1950 film lack critical thinking. Bargaining is not in Lady Tremaine's nature. How was that not clear? She demands, she tells, she doesn't plea or bargain. How the hell is cartoon characters tearing a dress apart because said dress contained their belongings even remotely comparable to having your mother and her dress insulted and then ruined, having insults thrown at you, and then right then and there being forbidden to go the ball, and all with in a matter of seconds? How is Lady Tremaine's backstory unnecessary? The only thing that wasn't shown on-screen is her life with her first husband, everything else she told Ella we saw it. Lady Tremaine serves as a foil to the main character - how Ella could have ended up as a miserable, jealous woman like Lady Tremaine did if she wasn't holding on to her kindness and allowed tragedy and sorrow to consume her. Unlike most "Cinderella" adaptations, this wicked stepmother is actually given depth and narrative purpose. Saying the 2015 film has scenes that are rushed and come out of the blue is absolutely ridiculous. What the hell are your examples? The stepmother finds the slipper and Cinderella's true identity. I guess you missed the scene after the ball where the stepsisters talk about the prince and Lady Tremaine notices that when Ella's back in turned she somewhat resembles the mystery princess, since only her face was enchanted to look different. *WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?* _in the remake the guy knows she's a servant yet tries the slipper on upper class woman way higher than her rank ( she met him in the woods in her servant attire , and at the ball confirmed she was the girl from the woods,he also knew her name ) some of whom are of a completely different ethnic background_ Which "Cinderella" movie are you referring to? In the 2015 film, the prince doesn't learn her name until the end of the movie. Because a broken glass slipper was found but the owner wasn't, the Grand Duke and the Captain of the Guards are send by Kit to search for the girl, and the Grand Duke uses the remaining slipper on every maiden in the land, so her can prove that the mystery princess in not to be found. As Kit is incognito, trying the slipper on women who don't look like Ella is not on him. _come off as an airheaded doormat who always smiles like she's stoned_ Which "Cinderella" movie is that? The 1997 TV one with Brandy? Lily James' Cinderella is the only one who acts like a believable person, almost all the other ones act like play actors putting on a show for children, complete with stupid dialogue, and random nonsense. _One of the least bad ,but not good by any means ,the colours are also sometimes overly garish and oversaturated_ Unless you're only talking about the scenes with the stepsisters, they're suppose to look that way, you uncultured swine. It matches their personalities, being over-the-top and garish. "I could go on and on about the flaws it has." Oh please do cuz so far I've seen *ZERO* What pretentious garbage you wrote. What nonsense. Then again, do not go on. You might as well have written other garbage like, "Why isn't her dress silver? Why isn't she wearing gloves, and choker and jewelry, and bla bla bla."

@@ivillu How the hell do people mistake the 2021 Cinderella movie for a Disney movie? Aside from Disney's name being completely absent, it doesn't match with any of the Disney live-action remakes. The fact that it was a jukebox musical, the main character having a personality that's straight out of a parody film, and the stepfamily not sharing the names from the Disney animated movie should have tipped anyone to freaken check what company or studio made the film. It hasn't even been a decade since the 2015 live-action _Cinderella_ film, so mistaking the 2021 film for a Disney movie doesn't make you clueless, it makes you stupid.

@0deadx21 it does match up with the recent Disney remakes and narratives, with her wanting to be a "business woman" a girl boss, plus you have the actors speaking about "the classics" in several interviews so it's quite understandable for people to assume it's from Disney. I definitely should've picked up on that, but I didn't realize Cinderella was in the public domain, so I didn't think another company could make a Cinderella movie and just assumed it was Disney behind it.

@@ivillu Really? What live-action remake does the 2021 _Cinderella_ film's story and characters resemble the most, if any? Because it seems like a parody of the trend rather than actually fitting in with it. While watching 2021's Cinderella, I didn't get reminded of anything about any of the Disney live-action remakes, not even a little. The visuals, the characters, the dialogue, none of those seem remotely close to anything Disney. How's about people actually follow up on assumptions and search for facts. People are acting like the 2015 _Cinderella_ film didn't happen for some reason and that 2021's _Cinderella_ is a Disney movie with zero evidence on and off the screen. It's embarrassing.

The original "Beauty and the Beast" was an allegory on marriage. The girl was not a passive victim, she was an example for the many girls who got married to men they didn't know without any knowledge of sexuality. Beauty leaves her father and her family to live with an unknown, intimidating creature who is however very kind and attentive to her. In time she grows to love him and agrees to marry him (i.e. to have sex with him) and finds out that he truly is a prince (i.e. the sex act is not terrible but beautiful). The Disney version is a very different story: it's about learning to discover and love a guy's inner beauty, not the outward one. That was modern enough.

so I have a few questions. In the animated version it’s clear why shere kahn wants mowgli: it’s for the thrill of the hunt. but why does he want mowgli in the remake? And in Cinderella her father died when she was young so it made sense when she became a servant and had only animal friends . but in the remake the father died when Ella was an adult so shine she knows how to ride and constantly goes into town and has an actual human friend why doesnt she just leave? and don’t even get me started on the others

Gal Gadot has made a great impression in previous movies. If I were her, I'd say, "I get to parade around with a selfish and immature fake version of Snow White? No way. I don't care if you don't pay me. I'm out of this nonsensical movie" And leave Rachel and Co. to fend for themselves. Now, the problem mostly comes from a group of men and women wanting to reminiscent with their children. Inadvertently giving away their money and energy to a company that doesn't care about them. Which is a fact, Disney, MGM, Paramount, etc, they are all business based. If twenty people were to step into a movie theater in each country. Half of them dislike it, and the other half like movie but have issues with some depictions. Of course, these reviewers have to be neutral on their view. Before the population decide whether it is worth their time. Instead of 100 million people walking into the movie theater, hence showing to Disney and other companies. Yes, I'm willing to spend my time and money being manipulated. Send us more iffy, garbage movies. This is the main reason why Disney is still making live-action movies. There are people out there willing to give away their self-will and power to a business company that doesn't care about them. Don't get me started on Amazon Prime and Netflix. That's an essay for another day. 😄 📝

It's as if Disney doesn't know what fairytales are anymore. They're taking something set in it's time, yes (What isn't?), but there's a reason they're also CLASSICS. 'Classic' means that they survive the times because their themes are endlessly relevant.

Nice video and agree with your views. I feel Disney and several of the actresses here in the remakes, talk a big game about feminism but completely misunderstand the meaning of it. The Suffragette Movement didn't lay down their lives so women could take over from men and become the new CEO's. They fought for women to have the option to become CEO's if they wanted to. There's no shame for a woman to be rescued by a man. Snow White wanted love and she found it, good for her.

@ivillu; Mulan was based on an old Chinese poem and in the poem it says that Mulan was trained in combat by her father, before she went off to war to save her ailing dad; that is why Disney had to change the animated Mulan character from an inexperienced soldier to a well practiced warrior for the live action film.

@@Capydapy Actually there were some problems that we didn't see before that needed to be fixed. For instance- the Overdone Orientalism in the 1992 designs...sure there's still a lot of that going on in the remake, but at least they actually bothered to give Jasmine an actual default royal outfit outside of her engagement dress and wedding gown (from King of Thieves) instead of just having her walking around in her underwear for most of the time this time around. Sure it's not exactly what Persian Princesses wore, but at least she's got an actual regal dress now....and the parks now show her in a modified version of her wedding dress (changed to look Aquamarine like her default look so it isn't technically a wedding dress) after people were creeping...at a G-rated park. I mean really she's one of the Standard 6...and the first princess who isn't white and she's immeadiately seen as a "lady of the night"...that's really not good. That actually happened with all the non-white princesses except Mulan, Tiana and Moana. It seems a little sketchy to me. There are some times where things do need to be fixed. Maybe not everything, but getting Jasmine some actual clothes was a needed change...not just for Disney's safety, but for the actresses that play Jasmine in the parks due to occassional weirdos showing up and targeting her most frequently. The other princesses don't have this problem because their dresses cover enough...or when Ariel's in mermaid mode...they'll think "she's a fish out of water". (Literally😂!) Was it necessary to do a whole live action remake? Probably not, but sometimes character redesigns are warranted.

they could have reimagined Snow White where the evil queen is actually her older sister not the stepmother and Snow White's a Bratty little shit. She purposely runs away just to piss off her sister act like the full probrecita, lies to the dwarves and she doesn't get the prince in the end the queen does and either Snow White it'll be the straight villain and die at the end or they somehow make up at the end. I think that storyline could have worked with these two actresses.
