I think the transformation was when she stepped inside the diamond shape and changed her dress, the way she woke up after being frozen wasn't epic at all, nothing happened there, just unfreezed and fell. Usually when an important event happens like transformations, the movies make it very clear, visible and obvious, with lights and effects and stuff

The fifth spirit is Memory. Ice is the physical manifestation of that, as explained through Olaf's, "water has memory," concept. Atahallan is the "headwater," or source, of the "Memory energy," or the spiritual force of that fifth element. But Memory can't exist without someone to remember it, so it needs a... host? Living vessel? To manifest through. So that's Elsa. So Elsa is calling herself, but because she can't remember her source until she gets there, she can't tell it's herself! That's how I interpreted it, but I love spirits and mythologies of that sort, so I'm practiced at interpreting them =) . EDIT: Also! Something else I feel gets missed a lot is that Gale, the salamander, and the water horse are not the only spirits of air, fire, and water. Just like the earth giants, there are multiple salamanders, water horses, and... sapient wind gusts, I guess? We're only introduced to one of each (although we technically see two different water horses) because they're intended to be friendly, so the writers wanted to give us one to know well so we could become attached to that individual as a character, instead of them getting lost in the crowd of others of their... species? Element? Kind?

What's interesting is in the film we dont see the memories until Elsa freezes them. I mean we do have that tornado scene but again until she litterally creates frozen sculptures from those memories they are impossible to follow/see clearly/ interpret. And her ability to animate snow/ice can be a way for to to animate the memories rather than just have them as sculptures. So I would say you are right. 😊

_I still don’t really understand all of Frozen 2… But, to me, the scene where Elsa is frozen is a beautiful metaphor for what can happen if we only look back at the past. The more we focus on the things that have already happened (what we literally cannot change without a time-machine), the less we’ll be able to make the decisions that we can NOW. The truth is always important, but so is moving forward. If you live too long in the past, eventually you’ll be stuck there._

This will NEVER happen, but the ending to Frozen 2 does leave a pretty awesome opportunity for Frozen 3, though it would have to be taken in a darker direction. Frozen 3 can actualy become a closer adaptation of the original Snow Queen fairy tale! How? By doing a gigantic time skip, let's say a century. The Kingdom has flourished and advanced with time, the adventures of Frozen exist in a weird mixture of Myth and History. Queen Anna has long since passed, as have most other characters we'd be familiar with, but what lonely and cold spirit is still nearby, always watching over... Elsa. How has she handled herself during all this time, does she loathe immortality, how has her character been challenged and how much of the old Elsa does she still retain? So many interesting directions this can be taken in, and with an adorable child protagonist, just like the original fairy tale, who maybe reminds Elsa of Anna, who has to reach out to Elsa to make her heart warm again--- the possibilities are heart-wrenching! If executed with a good script of course.

You have the broad strokes correct I think. I would add that the 'voice' Elsa heard was because that, while she was living in Arendale she was divided from herself. She had powers, but had not assumed full actualization and understanding of herself. The 'spirit' was at that time kind of embodied in her, but the memory it had, the 'consciousness' it had, was still focused in the glacier. So it was prodding Elsa to leave Arendale, go to the glacier, so that they could finally be fully one. It used her mother's voice because A) it had to act through memories of things that happened; it can't seem to just TALK or make up new information, and B) because it knew she would be drawn to that voice. This is ALSO why the nature spirits attacked Arendale, by the way. The 5th Spirit has a lot of influence over them, and directed them to do this...knowing that if Arendale seemed to be in danger, Elsa would do anything to protect it. And she only had one lead...a lead that led her straight to the glacier. It's significant because Elsa starts the movie out believing that she's done. She's mastered her powers, she has it all under control...everything's fine now. The call is this nagging sense that there's something more for her. Something that being a human queen in a human queendom can't fulfill. My question throughout the duology is, at this time, did the trolls know she was the embodiment of an elemental spirit? It seems like they maybe could have? But then, if they did, why wouldn't they have said anything? And surely the Queen had SOME inkling of the nature of spirits and might have recognized what was happening to Elsa? Why did she go along with the insane plan to traumatize Elsa into isolation? Frozen 2 wraps up the main storyline of the series decently well, but it implies some...really weird and even disquieting things about Frozen 1. :)
@courtneybogle24
@courtneybogle24 2 года назад
As for why the Queen went along with it- she may have fully believed that it was her people who attacked the Arendellians. She may have seen Elsa's powers- especially after they caused harm- as a punishment on her/her people for what happened in the forest. Additionally, there is a reason she never told anyone she was northuldra. Can you imagine the prejudices against her people after they supposedly "killed" arendelles king and guard? Especially since from the arendellians point of view, they just gave them this huge "gift"? Then, her daughter pops up with magic- which is only associated with the northuldra. Of course she'd want to hide it- would Elsa ever be accepted as Queen if she possessed the one thing the Northuldra always had? Would mob mentality take over if anyone ever found out? Would her daughter be in danger? It is a very complicated situation. I think the king and queens plan to hide Elsas magic makes MORE sense after frozen 2. They were terrified for her, and what would happen if the people of arendele found out.

I believe Elsa is NOT the first 5th spirit. There was another one, a long time ago. Long enough, that while the myth survived, the name "the 5th spirit" did not. Here me out. I have a reasoning behind this. In the first movie, Elsa is said to have sent Arendelle into an "Eternal Winter." How did the villagers know it was an eternal winter? I propose that the original 5th spirit once froze the kingdom in an eternal winter lasting many years, for reasons lost to time. Only once the villagers, desperate, rose up and killed the evil Ice queen did it thaw. It would explain why Elsa's parents had her hide her powers. The myth was well known. If it was discovered there was a new Ice queen, her life would be in danger. especially after it was proven her powers were dangerous. Thus why she was hidden from the kingdom. For her safety, and everyone else's. Its also why the villagers instantly assumed she started and eternal winter. She was the Evil Ice Queen. Reborn.

I want to say that Elsa is just as she was before she froze just with a clearer power upgrade. When Elsa's power froze her sister in frozen Anna revived herself with an act of true love. I want to say it is essentially the same here. Elsa goes too far not because she drops down into the deepest part of the glacier but because she is actively attempting to change the traumatic memory of her grandfather killing possibly her other grandfather...... (TBD). And of course she still hasn't mastered her power yet so the source of her power Ahtohallan put her on pause hoping that the other half of the bridge can solve the situation. Also Elsa is not queen mainly because she oddly enough reminds me of Kristina of Sweden. A queen who was crowned king and left her country because of several things and just existed out in the world. Kristina abdicated the throne just like Elsa abdicated to Anna. At least that is how I see it. Lol❄

My understanding with Elsa was that she was primarily human with ice magic before. Although she had elemental affinity for ice, it was only still just a part of her growing. But I think by the end of Frozen 2, she fully embodies being the 5th elemental spirit of ICE and so in a way her human identity "died" since that is not her primary identity now. She is now partly human BUT has shifted her "soul" or form or self into the 5th elemental spirit. So much like the fire salamander who is a fire elemental that can take the form of a salamander. Elsa the human with magic doesn't exist anymore and has "died" bc now she has become Elsa the Ice Elemental that has a human form.

I have a theory, the reason Elsa died AND the reason she was brought back is because of Anna. I think Elsa was supposed to conquer/tame all of the nature spirits to "level up" so she could go to Ahtohallan and see the past and avoid being frozen by the deep cold. But Anna prevented Elsa from going after the earth giants, so Elsa wasn’t able to fully upgrade. Obviously, she goes anyway and is frozen and "dies" because she technically didn't complete all the side quests before going forward. But Anna saves her and brings her back to life with her love, so if Elsa is an immortal spirit now, it's at least partly because of Anna. So Anna played a huge part in Elsa's journey to becoming her true self. I could be totally off but that's what i took away from the movie when i saw it. Secondary theory: It was the nature spirits themselves that chose to give Elsa powers to begin with. Since they have a special connection with the northuldra people, they choose protect them and when the old king killed the northuldra leader, they wanted to find a way to make things right. In order to do this, they would bestow the firstborn child of the next king (who was saved by an act of kindness by one of their own people) with the ability to connect with nature, so that this child would be compelled to make things right someday. Thus Elsa was born with powers and eventually, Ahtohallan decided they had been waiting long enough and began calling to Elsa in a way that she couldn't ignore or escape from, and she was beckoned on the quest to right the wrong that had been done to the northuldra people. Since nature isn't evil, they had arranged for a way that Elsa could complete this mission without dying but if you follow my first theory, you'll see that Anna kind of threw a wrench in the gears (not her fault, she didn't know this) and foiled the nature spirit's original plan, which was for Elsa to be able to upgrade her powers to survive the deep cold, so she could go on to complete the rest of the mission herself. But Anna played an important part and did the second half herself. Sorry that was so long, i am a huge frozen fan and i've been thinking about this for years. This is just my own way of understanding what happened in frozen 2, and also the first frozen. I think my theory covers the bases, it explains why Elsa was gifted powers to begin with, who gave them to her, what she was supposed to do with them, and how Anna changed the plans and played an important part so that the whole story wasn't just about Elsa. But if anyone else has a different theory i'd love to hear it!

Yes, the wave was supposed to take out Arendelle. But it was saved because the spirits agreed that it deserved to stand. And that was not only because of the selfless sacrifices by Anna and Elsa, but by the actions of the Arendellian soldiers in the tearing down of the dam as well. And I still say that thin wall of ice was more than sufficient to stop the wave because it's MAGIC. Kind of eliminates the natural law of physics from the equation.

I didn't think the story was all that complicated. When I listened to the theory/explanation I got kinda confused, but apart from the whole "Elsa died" part, then you came to the same conclusions as I did. The way I see it, Elsa was born the 5th element. Her and Anna was always meant to be the bridge between the two people, a bridge their parents created to tear down the harmful ways and create a better understanding between the two people. The moment in the glacier is Elsa leaving her old life as human and Queen to become the 5th element in its complete form, but, just like how the dam weakened all the other spirits, it also weakened her - by sending the information to Anna, she establishes the foundation for the new bridge and the break from the old harmful ways, so that they together - the non magical human sister and the magical sister turned nature spirit. And I think you might be a little too fixated on the whole spirit = dead. In mythology, spirit is much less tangible than that. The spirits aren't lost souls, they're nature spirits. Manifestations of the natural forces, type of spirits. Also, if a ruler is deemed unfit or abdicates the throne, then the next in line will become ruler. Many rulers have passed on the throne to the next in line, when they're too old to rule or just think the next in line will have a greater chance if they get to rule while they can still guide their hand.

Here’s a question as well. Can Anna hear the ice memories? She must be able to right? That leap of logic about the dam has got to be because she heard the memory and not just saw the sculpture of the moment.

Elsa may be immortal. If she is a goddess. Because think about it, You would of died if someone stole your heart, but Te Fiti didn’t, she just turned into Te Ka and came back when Moana saved her, she was completely “alive”. So goddesses are probably immortal, which means Elsa must be a goddess and she must be immortal.

I'm glad you said Frozen 2 had better music. Into the Unknown was amazing, and my favorite song in the series(?) is "Do the Next Right Thing". Reminds me of "You know better than I" from King of Dreams. It's not as technically impressive as other songs like Let It Go or Into the Unknown (or 90% of songs in Prince of Egypt) but in it's simplicity, I love those two songs better than the more "impressive" songs from their prior movies in the franchises.

My headcanon is, since I saw Frozen II in theatre, that Elsa is immortal. While the 4 spirits embody their elements, Elsa embodies the bridge between humanity and the spirits. Just like elements don't die, neither do the spirits. If spirits don't die, neither does Elsa. As long as there are spirits and there are humans, she'll continue to be the bridge because that is what she embodies.

If Anna dies. Elsa might not be able to handle it but then again she may protect arendelle and her niece or nephew or she will freeze her heart and become cold and distant. Also on a side note both Anna and Elsa are the fifth spirit but Elsa is recognized as the official spirit according to Disney. A prime examp,e is when both Anna and Elsa touch the mist and are allowed passage instead of just Elsa being blown back

What I've always thought was that it's all to do with emotions and knowing the past and truly understanding it can be overwhelming sometimes, especially with your own ancestral history. Seeing a horrific event (of any kind) in your ancestral history can be unsettling and cause you to become emotionally frozen (stuck in one emotion/mindset). Elsa gives Anna the information to continue because she is frozen (overwhelmed and can't move past what she's learnt). Anna has been at her lowest (in the cave, losing everything but she refuses to quit) and then does the next right thing which is to look forward and correct the past. Not letting it continue as it was. Anna helps Elsa to move forward by correcting the wrongs done, they work together and are stronger together (emotionally, no longer frozen in the past). Elsa didn't die she was just frozen emotionally (and can actually move again, it's all symbolic). She says in frozen 1 that the cold doesn't bother her anyway but thats her in denial. When she learns about her history she is frozen. Knowing and understanding something are two different things entirely. Elsa in frozen 1 is trying to convince herself by saying that it doesn't bother her (denial). It's rather complex for a kids movie but I believe it's a way of helping children understand emotions and how to cope with them.

The one thing that's always bugged me is that Elsa wasn't at Anna's coronation. That was a major step up and a hugely important moment for both Anna and Elsa. Anna stepping into her role as ruler, something I've always believed she was meant to be, and Elsa stepping down and finding a place and a life that she truly loves and feels at peace with. But Elsa wasn't there on that day and there's no reason she shouldn't have been.

There actually is another way for the next in line to become the monarch without the current monarch to die. It's called abdication, and it's when the current monarch willingly hands the throne over to the next in line for some reason. In "The Crown", Elizabeth II's father George VI became king because his brother Edward VIII abdicated the throne to be with a divorced woman, which used to be against the rules in England. Elsa could have abdicated to Anna in order to stay in the Enchanted Forrest, and since Anna and Kristoff would be getting married soon, there's a high likelihood that the two of them would produce heirs whereas Elsa was seemingly uninterested in any romantic attachments and would most likely not have any heirs.

I admit, I didn't fully understand the story, especially just _how_ Elsa had gone too far. She was literally just following the memories. but I guess she went too far down into the glacier? Anyhoo, I do think Elsa died down there. Olaf was no longer able to hold form, which means her magic had died too at that moment. However, I think the 'fifth spirit' element is what resurrected her, so to speak. It's like her mortal soul was replaced by the spirit and she was renewed (keeping her physical form) - once Anna, the other half of that bridge had completed her task.

I had hoped that Elsa's ice wall was going to kind of glacier-plow the royal castle to rubble while still saving the rest of the city. Instead we just got Disney. As for her change from mortal to spirit... does the Beast die? Does Hercules die? Does Ariel die? Does Frodo die? Does Obiwan die? Do Trek transporters kill you? Do you order desert after a big dinner? When you bring magic into the situation, death doesn't work anymore.

Honestly, I think the line “go to far and you will be drowned” refers to the parents because they went to far. Elsa because she’s ice or has ice powers can’t be drowned. Side note the will be drowned line could be in reference to the town being drowned out or destroyed.
@aria-fg8er

The phrase "go to far & you'll be drowned" does not literally mean you will be drowned it means if you go to far back into the past you will be stuck in it. Elsa went too far into the past when she was at Attoholan. (Idk if I spelt attoholan correctly)

Okay, my two cents: the recurring theme in F2 is bridging divides. Bridging the divide between sisters, bridging the relationship between Anna and Kristoff, the Northuldra and the Arendeleans(?), the past and the present. I postulate that the leader of the Northuldra King Runard murdered had powers like Elsa did, granted by the magic of nature. Since he was murdered, he was unable to pass them on to another leader, and the power had to manifest in a way that would allow the world to heal.

Elsa being the 5th spirit theory: Elsa isn’t ice in reference to frozen water. Elsa is ice in reference to the frozen river of memories. If u think of the fifth spirit as the guardian of history and memories (or the personification of atohalan) then it would make sense for the human embodiment of the frozen river to have ice powers. The way her powers were shown in the whole second movie was based around the idea of water(read ice) having memory. Elsa is the only thing apart from atohalan that’s able to access those memories. She doesn’t have any connection to the other elements apart from being able to in some way control them but she has VERY strong connections to atohalan. Why did she freeze? My only guess would be bc she’s only the personification of the 5th spirit while atohalan is pure frozen memeory. Basically she can’t handle the full power of the 5th spirit until after she’s ‘died’.

Actually if I remember correctly, Elsa knew that her grandfather harmed the people in the woods (can't spell their name lol) and she knew that the damm had to be destroyed. She chose to go further despite not necessarily needing to. We didn't need to see the killing scene to know that the old king was bad, but she became to caught up in unravelling the past. That is how I understood it. And I agree 100% Arendelle should have been destroyed by the wave.

I think the only situation where Elsa has to step down from her "place" as the 5th Spirit is when she or Anna has children with someone of another culture (probably Anna getting busy with Kristoff would do); maybe not when those children are young, but when they are old enough to act on their own.

I see the voice as Elsa's mother calling to her to learn who she truly is. I love family history and find that knowing who my family were helps me better understand myself and shape who I want to be. Also we often spend our lifes looking for something outside of ourselves to fill the gaps in our lives when what is inside us is all we need. This is paralleled by the fact Elsa doesn't need a remantic interest to find herself. Her mother called to her to show her the memories of her descendants to help her find herself and learn from her ancestors mistakes. In showing herself, Elsa was able to truly let everything go and ascend to a higher state of being.

Interesting fact about Frozen 2, much like the first alot of things of the plot were changed last minute (hence why there’s 4 cut songs that were recorded) . One of the things which is going to be what I’m taking about this comment is quite interesting. So Mattias originally had a much bigger role in the movie and it was originally going to be him that saved Agnar and Iduna (Elsa and Anna’s parents) the day of the battle. They even had a song for him but they never got to record it. The reason his role in the movie was reduced and his song was cut was because the actor who played him, Sterling K Brown, was busy filming the popular show This Is Us and couldn’t be there to record as often as everyone else

100% agree on the Music being stronger and the story being weaker. I would go so far as to say that the music is *easily* better, and that's saying something. It's harder to sing along to though which I think is why it didn't get as popular as the music in the first movie. Into the Unknown is great and Show Yourself makes me cry if I watch the video with it as there's so much emotion in it. the supporting songs are also more unique and memorable. Story is weaker but wouldn't say it makes me enjoy the first any less though.
