Did I do that? Broken leaf spring on my Kenworth SturdyWeld Dump Truck Pup Trailer.

Long days, heavy loads and the truck being loaded 24 hours a day is very hard on the springs on the front of my pup trailer. Lucky for me, I know a guy who doesn’t mind going into work late to get my truck back on the road in a few hours.

I am a retired Science Dept. Head from a high school. I was reading what kids have put down for answers. One was: How would you make a marriage work? . . . Tell your wife she looks pretty even if she looks like a dump truck. . . . This does NOT apply to you but your name crossed my thoughts because of your truck. Your drive it well. I think you drive it as good or better than most that I have observed. You slice through the gears like butter. . . . no kidding. Of course you realize that your looks are perfectly fine. Your husband will likely get a kick from the child who answered the question the way that he did. Have a great day. 😊

I would have replaced both springs on that axle. Changed alot of springs in 45years. As easy as it was to get to those springs. I would have just replaced both. A big thing is too retighten the U-bolts in a couple of days. Stay Safe. 🇺🇸👍

Yep you're 100% correct. I worked for years on the mines in my area and that's what we were taught during apprentice years to always change both leaf-blades, bearings, shocks etc at the same time on same axle.

Maybe enlighten me on why nuts are installed dry on something that needs to have a substantial amount of torque to function as it should. Nuts are having to overcome the friction of the threads and the mating surface of the nuts to achieve proper torque, and dry it just cant happen. How much is lost is anybody's guess but there is a loss. Some never sleeze or moly grease or ep3 would help.

@reefready9284

Like has been mentioned it's good to change both sides, as well I would have changed to the multi pak (more leafs just thinner } and you wouldn't`t have as high a chance of a main leaf braking and parking you. A little heavier but better imho. Springs are cheap so when they go at least it's not a month wrecker. One thing about the 3 packs, when they break there's more of a chance it goes flying and that can be a month wrecker.

@clydeacor1911
@clydeacor1911 2 года назад
There is really no worse suspension to have on a construction trailer than Hutch spring! It's OK for highway but definitely nothing but issues on construction trailers between the springs and equalizers they're nothing but problems down the road. The manufacturers use them because they're cheap, before the pandemic we were buying the complete spring pack for $89 they're probably double that now. Best suspension for construction is a NewWay single point spring suspension for a set of tandems and if you have a multiple axle configuration like this you do a single point spring on the center 2 axles and then do an air ride lift axle in front and behind those 2 axles. For everyone saying to change all the other springs there's seriously no need unless the spring wear points or equalizers are worn out. This style of spring can last 30 years before it breaks or it can break in days it's just how this spring is. If you replace everything that (might) break all you will be doing is replacing parts and not running the truck.

I'm wondering if maybe removing the tire nearest the cutting torch wouldn't be such a bad idea before torching. I mean, if one of those red-hot u-bolt tips should happen to fall against the sidewall of the tire while you're concentrating on cutting the others. I think we've all seen videos of what happens when a truck tire blows near unexpecting people. I wouldn't want to see that here. Just my 2-cents after watching.

@davidmorse8432
@davidmorse8432 2 года назад
It is usually a good practice to replace used "U-bolts" with new ones because the bolt material will develop a set after the first use and lose some of its elasticity. That process is called, "work hardening". It is intended when torquing down a "U-bolt", to stretch it so that it will keep everything tight during it's service life. To accomplish this it needs to be stressed to near it's yield point. If you reuse one it may not be able to be stretched enough during torquing so the nuts may work loose over time. Torque is critical for proper installation of "U-bolts" but often ignored due to the lack of proper torquing equipment. A reputable suspension shop would have this equipment available. Some of these bolts may take as much as 1900 ft. Lbs of torque to tighten. After a few work cycles it is good to go back and recheck the torque on the "U-bolt" nuts. Many times spring failure can be the result of improper "U-bolt" torque or the reuse of them because the spring stack doesn't act as a unit so one leaf may be working harder than the others. Usually its one of the longer leafs in the stack.

As someone who has done more heavy truck springs than I can count I have no intention to be critical but some suggestions. 1.Laying on that rock while working is going to catch up with you in about 15 years. 2. I have used torches and cut off tools to cut U bolts. I prefer cut off wheels because you can usually control the grindings with the guard. A piece of hot slag on your neck or in your shirt hurts. 3.Both side spring stacks should be changed 4.I don't know if there is a torque setting on your impact, if not a torque stick should be used 5.Should be retorqued after 100 or so 6. When doing PM you can check u bolt torque by "sounding" the u bolts with a small hammer. If either or both sides ring it is torqued. Dull thud on both sides means that it may need retorqued. I can honestly say since retirement, I don't miss it. Take Care

This style of spring typically on trailers and some truck axles break when bouncing over a rail track or speed bump when the truck or trailer is empty. Spring fatigue eventually leads to this happening. The shock of the bounce snaps them in one failed swoop. Those springs are usually a quick change and back on the road. Replacing the U-bolts is a must.

I've known many GUYS, myself included, that might not have gone looking for trouble mid-day unless there was a weird feeling in the truck or something. Leaf springs just break over time, that's what they do. Quick question for Bobby though---- it appears that he's using either propane or MAP gas in his torch. By the looks of the flame and the length of time it's taking to heat before cutting, he may be using a 1 piece acytelene tip instead of the 2 piece propane kind ? I'm probably wrong, but that's the way it looked. I'm 73 and been doing this shit for a long time, so trying to help, not criticize ☺. You're lucky to have the team you have, both of you !!
