Did I Make A Bad Buy?! The Risk Of Low Grade Comics...Key Comic Book Unboxing!

In this video I talk about a recent pick up I made for a Golden Age Comic Book - a "TIMELY" comic that I wanted to open on 4th of July but couldn't get the video done. This one is for a Captain America Comics 37 but in a low grade. While I'm happy to add this one to the collection I do wonder if there is some risk with low grades because of variability between them. I discuss in this video.
Hope you guys enjoy the video!

I used to collect back in the late 80s and early 90s. The last couple of years I just started to buy whole boxes of “crap” at flea markets, pawn shops, ect……. Those “crap” comics are worth more than my whole marvel collection from the time. Whole box of horror comics from the 1970s or late 60s. Back in the day!

I used to wait and wait until I saw a high grade copy of a book on my want list. Then time after time, when a nice copy finally became available, the price would be significantly higher than it would have been a year or two before. So now I have finally decided that a low grade copy is better than having no copy at all. My 1.8 X-Men #1 might very well be the lowest graded book in my collection, but I am glad I own it. And your CA presents beautifully, and actually looks as good as a book that would have cost you five times more money. Great pick-up!

I buy low grade on big books because I always get a deal. Just bought a couple low grade keys for under $700 as a matter of fact. As long as you are happy it never matters, but presentation does matter to me. Also I would keep the blue label. It's slabbed so it won't improve anything, and blue is always better than purple.

Congratulations! You can definitely try to marry a centerfold. Blue label .5 due to missing centerfold or cool, but upgrading it via marriage won’t hurt it, because you can always go back.

Totally agree. I would definitely buy a good presenting copy of a rare book. Not many golden age books out there waiting to be found so what is currently in collections is just about all that there will ever be available to be bought and sold.

My thoughts are once it’s slabbed all that really matters is how the cover presents. I do understand wanting things complete I know I have some missing page books but mainly non story affecting

Low grade really does not matter to me if it is a comic I would normally not be able to afford..I have been a low budget collector for 5 decades and it has served me very well as a return on my money ..Great vid love the cap comic and I would want it if it were just the front cover.Amazing..

Same is true for all purple label "restoration". Despite the changes being drastically different from a small marker line to fully pieced in and glued covers.

Dang! Congrats, Mickey. Beautifully presenting 0.5. Agree. Wonderful book. One of the top 10 to 20 Schomburg covers imho, and that is saying something 🙂

Buy the book, not the grade. That book presents very well. I made a similar purchase of a CGC 0.5 Fantastic Four #2. It was missing the Thing pin-up but the cover looked like 4.0. I paid a fraction of what a a true 4.0 would cost.

Nice copy. Mine would grade 6.5 but it has rice paper around the staple. That will be removed when I grade it.

The big thing is you got to ask yourself what flaws you can live with. I wanted a Fantastic Four number 1. The highest sold was a 9.2 for 1.5 million. I purchased a coverless for 2400 or 2649.66 with postage and tax. Had a repo cover made from scans of the 9.2. Because at the end of the day I wanted comic I could look at all 170 plus panels of the story and share with fellow comicbook collectors. You did quite well you wanted something slabed that you could display the fact that it is missing the centerfold is not the concern it fills your need as dose my raw coverless FF 1.

My Miss Fury 6 graded 0.5 due to cutout panels in a few pages but when viewing it, it looks like a 2.5-3.0, so it’s well worth it considering how cheap I bought the raw copy. I will say however, this is used by some to try & justify high prices though. I was on FB a few months ago with a guy trying to sell a signed Hulk Annual 1 by Steranko in a 9.0. His price was slightly higher than the 9.2 signed one from Heritage about a month before. His argument was that it ‘presented” better than that 9.2 & the signature looked better. That just seems like trying too hard in a down market.

So I don't know much about comic conservation vs restoration, but I thought it was that restoration is subtractive while conservation is the inverse, so wouldn't adding pages, if done correctly, constitute a blue label? If not, then how is leaf casting an accepted form of resto by comparison? 😅
@FireflyComics
@FireflyComics Месяц назад
The issues you raised about 0.5 blue labels are dead on. That’s why collectors of rare books have the option to make use of qualified labels to distinguish the differences. I have a Cap 6 (1941) with an ad missing from interior. It didn’t affect the story and the cover otherwise looks great. It got a 1.0 blue label. Qualified would differentiate it better
