If you were going to change the cassette anyway I wonder why you didn't give the AXS a try on the proper cassette. I have the lower line AXS on my bike and it's been perfect all the time, even at bike parks the shifting and clutch have been flawless.

No, the clutch is terrible, the type 3 clutch is almost as short lived as the type 2.1 and when It is shot, the derailleur is done. Overall, they are crisp shifters and quick to set up, but replacing a $1000 (or even $380 for GX) every year because the clutch wears out is ridiculous. SRAM loves some planned obsolescence.

I have no doubt axs works fine for you, and for most people, but the sram clutches are garbage. If not mistaken, it is because of a patent from shimano, but then again, TRP and other manufacturers are able to implement an adjustable clutch still. My guess is that it might be the sprag clutch system aka roller bearing? If so, I'd love sram to move on to ratchet or another system just so they can be strong and/or adjustable, because damn it is a pain in the ass hearing chainslap all the time.

Just my two cents….you are adding a lot of variables each time. The previous off-brand cassette, custom pulley wheels on the derailleur, hot wax chain. To get a good feeling of SRAM XX1 or X01 I imagine it is best to stick with all the same brand of components and no select variables.
@EvansMTBSaga

I debated on ditching the gold pulley wheels to keep it stock! So far so good, but if the chain falls off the pulley wheels again I'm for sure ditching them. I highly recommend hot wax though!
@craigkudlac3125
@craigkudlac3125 2 года назад
@@EvansMTBSaga I was wondering why you had kept the golden jockey wheels, because from my personal experience I had one break on my sram group set and replaced it with one that I already had which would latter cause my derailed to get a bit messed up over time forcing me to get a derailleur. So you might want to keep an eye on those and if they break replace with SRAM brand ones.

I have the GX AXS with the SRAM 1299 cassette and ride 125 miles a week of Black Diamond trails on an unwaxed XX1 chain and have had nothing but flawless shifting. I love the way the AXS integrated with my Garmin where I can see battery levels, current gear and shift count. I was surprised to see that depending on the distance and trail I ride, that I can have from 230 to 600 shifts.. no wonder my thumb would feel weak by the end of a hard day. That is all gone and a benefit you don't hear talked about. Never mind the super smooth, quiet shifting, your thumb will love it. So yeah, a $10,000 bike but a cheap off brand cassette and then upgrading to the expensive but correct cassette to test the trusty old cable actuated XO1 on a downhill?? Not a fair comparison. The hub, goofy pulleys and cheap cassette were your problem with both shifting and the loose chain. I'm sure there are a lot of people that would buy your whole AXS system from you in a hot minute knowing how truly incredible it is.

You buy a Maxima and bleed it with a hammer like Sam Pilgrim does and then complain about it not working while it's the best brake out there!!! 2. You use an off brand cassette and complain about the AXS derailleur not working well with it. I've run my AXS on multiple bikes (with Shimano and Sram cassettes) and for about 20.000km and have yet to have a single problem with it. If you don't know how to set up the drivetrain well, how's that the manufacturers problem? Also the charging complaint. I ride a lot and have to charge it every other month. So not a problem at all! 3. You complain about the flexibility of the Onyx hub while also saying that you cannot feel it on the climbs. Who cares about how it feels when standing. There's a lot of people complaining about the flex when pushing on it standing. When ridden they keep silent like the hub itself.

I like the heat shrink idea. I went from XO1 to the GX AXS upgrade. With the SRAM XG 1295 I had, I had no problems. You have to have a straight derailleur hanger and proper b screw adjustment though. I then went to a ShmEAGLE configuration with a Shimano XT cassette and chain and an HG+ chainring. Again, no problems. I have about 400 miles on it now, and in both cases used an AB oval. But I think that if I were to go back to cable, I'd use a Shimano set up. I greatly prefer the gear spacing on the Shimano cassette. The SRAM is just an 11 speed with a bailout gear added on.

It's not a flaw with the hub. The way a sprag clutch works is that it takes the movement from your chain/cassette and uses it to rotate the sprag slightly till it grips. It would be the same if it was a ball ramp design for the engagement. Once it's engaged it is locked up and does not lose power.

Hi Evan, The XX1 AXS drivetrain should 100% shift faster and arguably smoother than mechanical XO1. It’s possible that yours either wasn’t set up properly, although sram’s AXS clutches are coming up more and more for failing in the bike shop, and this affects gx, aswell. Their mechanical clutches definitely seem to be tighter for some reason. Also, I have an onyx hub on my bike but I’ve got the classic, not the vesper. While I agree the pedal flex is a bit strange to get used to, mine is definitely not as bad as it is on your yeti. I think the vesper has smaller sprags and so they flex more. consider the onyx classic ? can’t beat frictionless freewheeling and dead silence!

Im wondering if you know how important running the SRAM Cassette is. Its VITAL. You should not be slamming AXS for not running like you want with a non stock cassette. that not right. Also did you know the width of the upper jockey wheel is key (USE STOCK) and the B -tension screw adjustment is VITAL. The SRAM upper jockey wheel is made to interface the SRAM chain correctly WRT lateral play, and will provide the proper lateral movement with each perfectly spaced shift. You have unknown jockey wheels on (for some reason) and if the teeth and interface is more narrow than the stock SRAM jockey wheel, you have just introduced lateral play where there should not be. Understand these things, know how to adjust them , and you won't have ANY issues with the XX1 AXS. Im not trying to be a jerk , so please dont take it that way. Additionally, a SPRAGUE clutch (Onyx Hub) is a bit flexey by DESIGN , it has to be to engage and lock up. Do your research and see how it's built. Its designed that way and very robust and silent. There is no "problem " with it. What Onyx said is 100% correct. And I'd love to see how you measured your chain length .

The aluminum RD pulley wheels you use have skinnier teeth than the stock SRAM wheels, which means there is more slop in the chain/tooth interface which will undoubtedly make your shifting less precise. You couldn't pay me to run those jockeys!!

@@EvansMTBSaga No doubt the jockeys played a major roll in your skipping issues with AXS. If I were wrenching on your AXS drivetrain, I would first meticulously align your hanger with a quality tool that has no play. I would then double check that your chain ring was BOOST 3mm offset. Then I would check chain length. Then B Gap at sag. Then limit screws (AXS is NOT like a cable RD and the procedure is different). Then, I would find the best micro adjust setting, and this took me an entire ride to find. 17, 18 and 19 all worked in the stand, but out on the trail 17 would make noise in 5th and 19 would make noise in 8th. 18 is my only option and has remained my only option for both my X01 and Garbaruk cassettes... I really enjoy your channel, and just trying to give you some helpful feedback.

Yeah .... I dont know what to make of this hate towards AXS and expensive things Coming from someone with a YETI. But sure, dude AXS is not for everyone. But make no mistake..... you will all get AXS or its next generation in the future. Yeah it is expensive, you dont need it, because well nobody really needs it. You can ride without it fine, But boy oh boy it makes your life easier. Say goodbye to worrying about tensioning or maintenance of cables, housing, and shifting being moody or unpredictable. I never had an issue with mechanical one but AXS is reliable, consistent, and predictable, always: ALWAYS. And if those benefits that you get from day one are not enough. After 3 years of riding and abusing the system and enjoying that consistency. You will certainly appreciate its value.

So many things to comment on in this video 😅 Let's talk about the wax, did you just put that chain directly from gasoline into the wax??? if anyone wants to try this please use some isopropyl to clean the chain off after the gasoline soak.. but also soaking the chain is kind of a bad idea because you are removing grease from inside the rollers, and you would probably need ultrasound to get the wax into the rollers. Personally i just wipe of my new chain with isopropyl a couple of times to remove external factory lube and then i use a mix of 75% squirt wax lube and 25% muc-off dry wax lube. First application of the mix should be pretty heavy like 3 rotations of the chain while constantly applying a film of the wax mix. After giving it some 100 rotations on the cogs in different gears, just wipe it all of with some paper towels. now just apply a new layer but just a normal amount for one chain rotation, run the pedals a for a bit. Now let it dry a bit for 10-15minutes and wipe of the underside of the chain with a paper towel... congrats you can now ride with your waxed chain and you can carry the wax mix with you in a liquid form so that you can apply at any point if needed. You should always re-apply a coating after every bike wash, or whenever needed depending on conditions and weather.

To be fair, the onyx hub does feel squishy, but only in the largest sprockets. I am riding my onyx hub for half a year now, and the squishiness fades into the background. There is a minor penalty when climbing compared to e.g. a i9 hydra(my previous hub), but the instant engagement offsets the squishiness too. The major upside to this, is that you also feel uncoupled from the drivetrain while decending. Those hubs are a big part of my bike's magic carpet feeling. and silent > angry bees.

Of course if you stay all in brand it’s going to work flawlessly. Sram wouldn’t release a multi thousand dollar drivetrain if it didn’t shift perfectly. I understand the clutch but you can’t review the shifting performance if it’s not got 3 off brand parts as integral parts of the drivetrain

The pandemic gave birth to an influx of new mountain bikers in my area. About a year ago I ran into a group of new riders on the trails that had just started riding 8 months before. Two of them were on high end build Giant Reigns. Carbon , Factory Fox suspension and the whole nine yards. They mentioned how they had recently upgraded from their “entry level” $5K bikes. I was shocked that in 8 months they figured they were too good for $5K bike. I was almost offended for some reason. I left the interaction thinking to myself it was their fault there is such a shortage of bike parts and bikes. Then I realized that is a crappy way to think about it. Good for them. Buy what you want when it comes to this sort of thing. It’s a luxury at the lowest level. It’s not like you are hoarding life’s necessities. You just bought a nice bike. Ride your Yeti with pride. Even though it is a dentist’s bike.😉

I've had the exact same experience as you I've bought the best and lightest parts and fine tuned them. However I found that just going with what is known to work works the best. I've not used the garbaruk cassette but I have used superlight cassettes and pulley upgrades for road and they've always never been close. I would've just gone with what works and used x01 cassette and kept with stock pulleys and enjoyed it as its meant to be used

I run XX1 AXS on all 5 of my Yetis and have never had an issue. I suppose the reason SRAM recommends using Eagle components is because they were engineered to work together.
