Did it Survive, or is it Time to Change? Ecoflow Smart Generator

Going into the travel season, there was a lot of items in the rig that were brand new, and also new to me. Technology is not something I planned to incorporate into this rig, but wow has it made my life easier. The Smart Generator is one item I was very excited about, but certainly had my concerns with. Out of the box it started right up, but the overall operation of the device did come with a slight learning curve. You can use it without the smart features, but if you want just a regular generator I would recommend going a different route just to save yourself some money. If you are in a position to use the features, primarily speaking about charging the Ecoflow products, this is far superior to anything else available on the market. My initial concerns were mostly based around the operating RPM, and the reliance on a computer, but after 240 hours of use, and increasingly better performance, this generator has earned my confidence.

Thank you for sharing this. I had no idea that Eciflow made this. The smart generator + power bank is a fully productized version of a system that I was planning to build for the off-grid cabin that I want to build some day. I'm sure it isn't cheap, but compared to the cost and time I'd have to invest to build something like it myself, the price will probably be worth it. Keep up the great work. @@Destination_Adventure Speaking of Newfoundland, I think you'd really enjoy the province as it's a lot like the west coast. I've made the trek twice and will do so again. I would do the loop through Labrador, to the Island, then ferry over to Nova Scotia. Definitely bring your boat! Given your pace of travel, you could easily spend a few months there.

If you are moving most days your truck alternator can charge a large lithium battery bank at 100+amps per hour of driving. You can retire (or keep as backup) the generator and the gas cans and whole process of trying to keep your batteries charged while parked with a noisy gen. You just need to confirm your alternator and wiring is up to spec and add a Precision Circuits Lithium Battery Isolation Manager to properly charge the battery bank without overheating your alternator.
@maxmeister747
@maxmeister747 6 месяцев назад
But if you are not moving most days or your alternator only does 60amps like in my t3 and you are relying almost exclusively on solar then a generator is useful. But yes, people underestimate the charging ability of their vehicles and what they can do with a big lithium battery and inverter.

Since it only runs for a short time it should last for years. Does the last 20% of the charge cycle (80-100) slow down? To minimize runtime and maximize battery life perhaps charge 30-80%, and allow the solar to do the charging above 80%?

Thinking about this for camping, charge delta pro during the day, use battery at night, but I would like for it to be as quiet as possible during the day...

I wouldn’t worry too much about it running wide open. Onan onboard generators run wide open as well and they don’t suffer from it. Not sure exactly where these are made however, component life is dependent a lot on place of manufacture, ‘China’

I wouldn't worry about it running full belt. The technology now has them run more efficiently at high RPM for less time. They get better economy with a lower emissions. My boss use to tell me an engine is most efficient the closer the run to meltdown. 😂. But it will be interesting to see how it fairs out over its life.

You ever notice, once you live mobile like that, how many things you use are already D/C and you mostly use A/C just for the charger to turn it BACK into D/C again?? We still got a ways to go on this whole technology thing maybe?? Hahaha But it looks like a tech lil set up there, I didn't even see any ducktape! Classy...

@Ganiscol
@Ganiscol 7 месяцев назад
There is a compelling reason for long distance power transmission (i.e, the power grid) being AC and not DC, though. But its obviously different when you make your own power and the distance is feet as opposed to miles. 😉
@Sir_Michael_James
@Sir_Michael_James 7 месяцев назад
@Destination_Adventure oh for sure. I use both Solar and a Wind Generator, keeps from needing to run the diesel engine if I don't have to. But it's a small set up (on a boat) and I'm not running cameras, laptops, editing software AND satellite. I bet you run the fridge on propane just to save the juice for all the gadgets hey?! Hahaha .... I knew it! Yaassss.
@Sir_Michael_James
@Sir_Michael_James 7 месяцев назад
@Ganiscol ya but the application needs are SO far apart. Powering a city or town is completely different. However, an individual home could run on DC, but it has to create its own power to charge batteries, electronics ect.

If you basically move each day, it would be better to use a DC-DC charger via your truck using either a heavy duty alternator or a second alternator. I have a converted Ford Transit with a built-in 4KW gas-powered generator. It only charges a max of 16 Amps for my LFP batteries. The DC-DC charging runs my engine at idle, is quiet and sips gas and charges at 48 amps. Two disadvantages to this are, it won't run my furnace, it won't run my A/C unit and it isn't particularly good to idle engines. I supplement the charging with solar panels. My batteries DO run my furnace/water heater. I never use the gas generator, the microwave and only use A/C while plugged in. Something to consider.

I am pretty disappointed that the ecoflow system is so proprietary. I like my charger, inverter and batteries separate for space reasons and modularity. With my inability to afford ecoflow batteries and with this generator being the only dual fuel generator for sale in my country it is disappointing. I wish it could just have a 12v dc-dc charger instead of this fast charging thing so you could plug in an anderson connector and set what battery you have and the current you want to draw instead of having to go to ac power and then back to dc with a charger.
