Pretty much the title says it all. In this video, we compare and contrast an earlier production Type 38 Arisaka rifle with a later production Type 38 Arisaka rifle to see if the design changed and evolved over time? Afterall, the Type 38 was built for nearly 40 years and was produced in the millions.
This is a quick comparison video, and if you are interested in more of the rifle's history, please take a look at the Japanese Firearms playlist for much more information, cheers!

I love my type 38. Would be such a nice starter rifle for new shooters if ammo was more readily available.

The type 38 carbine is my favorite Japanese small arm of the world war era. Ive yet to find one in decent shape that hasn't had the mum dug out on. Nice comparison video.

Yeah, Type 38 carbines seem to have been defaced more than the long rifle...but Mums aren't everything. I have no problem with some of my Arisakas not having them....all part of the history afterall.

Are there specific years you can date the general features of the early vs late production?

Misha, did the Japanese ever counterbore their barrels? I just found a Series 23 Kokura Type 38 and it is counter bored, there is a step from the rifling to the counter bore so it wasn't just from cleaning rod wear. I see no evidence anywhere of any modification or markings from a lathe or vise that would indicate it was put in a fixture to do anything to the chamber or barrel to change it to 257. I only see one post about a Type 38 counterbore on the internet, and it didn't really say anything.

A lot of Japanese guns were used by the Viet Minh and the Viet Cong.
