His sources were vague at best, and he threw around logical fallacies like he was giving out candy a parade. The best thing anyone should do if they find his ideas interesting would be to take them with a grain of salt, but use them as a prompt to launch their own _actual_ research into the subject.

Not only was there no understanding of the mechanisms of medicine, the human body, consensus on what actually worked, etc., it's also important to note that mysticism and woo abounded and anecdotes, third hand stories and baseless accusations or conjecture were often treated as factual. At a time when beliefs there was an epidemic of secret rituals involving drinking baby bIood and that it would give those people immortality was widespread and taken seriously, I find it extremely hard to believe the factually of any of these claims.

I read his book, called The Chemical Muse which was an enjoyable and interesting read, but you're right that it feels like he is often a little too quick to create connections and links between various disparate subjects without providing too much support or justifications for his reasoning. I can still really recommend this book and still feel like I got a lot out of it.

He's not exactly wrong about a some things like the inseparability of medicine and religion in antiquity and I'm sure he has some really interesting and unique information about that given he has some unique sources but the conclusions he draws from that connection are just, well, completely delusional. Absolutely everything in antiquity was inseparable from religion not just medicine and nothing I've ever read would suggest it held a unique and revered position in the Greek world. Also just because some drugs/medications were said to be miraculous panaceas or divinely gifted mind expanders that would give you a connection to the gods by some ancient philosophers who may or may not be writing from their own experience doesn't mean that they actually were. Ancient Greek writers are notoriously prone to hyperbole and we with our modern medicine and powerful lab created psychedelics would probably not be as impressed by the healing/psychoactive effects of the ancient's drugs as they were in the first place. Worse he's also just flat out wrong in some places like his claim about the bible being entirely in Greek originally. Hebrew as we know it is a modern language but that doesn't mean that there was no ancient Jewish language for them to write things down in. It's called Aramaic and it's definitely what the old testament was originaĺly written in, not Greek.

The thing about ancient texts is they're not a be-all-end-all of truth. There's tons of myths, legends, scientific misunderstanding, and straight up lies throughout written history. Just because he is getting his information from these texts, doesn't mean that information can actually be substantiated in any way.

@@ZachHixsonTutorials Oh absolutely, and I don't think Ammon is trying to say that all ancient writings are true just cuz old. I've always gotten the impression from him that he's first trying to help give us context for how humans were living back then - making sure we understand that 2000+ years ago one's physical health was inextricably tied to ones spiritual health, so a lot of these practices are well documented by multiple sources - all so that we first may have the ears to hear. Then once we have that, maybe before we continue running all around the world trying to k!ll eachother over some dumb book (ie the Bible,) maybe we should actually be reading the original first (the Greek Septuagint,) to see if it truly is something worth following and fighting over? Instead of just continuing to go by some translation, of a translation, of a translation. But that's just been my impression of what the guy is trying to say. I could be way off 🤣
