In this video I explore the complex relationship between Judeau and Griffith. Today I attempt to answer the question “Did Judeau hate Griffith?” I combed through the Golden Age Arc anime and manga in hopes of figuring this out. The answer I came to surprised me.

Here is another theory, Corkus knew guts would fuck everything upp thats why he hated him. Guts realised this afterwards and went to avenge Corkus, going as far as using suduction just like that apostle did. Jokes aside i never noticed this about Judeau, man i love that character. Judeau didn't have a dream, much like Guts, but unlike Guts he has no strive to find one. He is complacent with his place in the world. Judeau very much loves Casca, and just wants the best for her. He doesn't see himself as an equal to Griffith. He does see Guts on that level and knows Guts and Casca could work as a couple. It would save Casca from the heartbreak and if they had gotten together it would have prevented Guts from leaving. Judeau was definitely one of the most important and capable members of the Band of the Hawk.
@yellow_jacket3260
@yellow_jacket3260 2 года назад
I honestly think one of the reasons why Judeau didn't survive, is that he didn't see value in himself. Given that he thought he was only a jack of all trades and someone worthy to be valued as a whole, is ultimately what caused his own downfall. As intelligent and insightful as he was, he wasn't able to see that those were things that he had himself, and therefore he doomed himself to the fate of the hands of another

I don't personally think that Judeau hated Griffith, however I think you're right in saying that he knew about Griffiths dark side, Judeau is a really smart man and good judge of character, he seems to be one of the only people that sees Griffith as a man in the band of the hawk, but a man who will accomplish something great, and his friendship and feelings for casca were the deciding factor on him staying with the band of the Hawk.

Judeau was one of my favorite characters also, but no matter how great he was, he just couldn't survive the eclipse for narrative purposes. The reason no member but the main 3 and Rickert could survive was because the eclipse is, to some level, signify Guts going beyond humanity and going against fate and what seems possible. He ascends to a different level and is able to fight monsters. Before the eclipse, characters like Judeau could stand with Guts because even though they couldn't fight as well as him, they could fight WITH him. Post eclipse, for them to be able to be in the story they'd have to at least be able to survive against apostles. It would take a lot away from Gut's character imo, the only reason Rickert got to live is that he was a kid and besides firing a rocket has been essentially removed from all fighting. But that's ok because he was never really much of a fighter even in the BotH, Judeau however, was.

Griffith is a dual character. He has his human side, but also his regal side, One part of griffith wants a friend, a family, what any human wants, the other wants the throne, the power. Judeau was such a unique presence in this story. :') He admired Griffith, but he definitely held some level of resentment. But once everyone got branded, I think Judeau decided Griffith truly was a lost cause. Even his speech to Casca that she was the Hawk's leader now was proof enough of that. Also, shoutouts to Judeau getting the fairy dust from Puck to help heal Guts' wounds. Amazing that he kinda linked Guts and Puck together through that one act. Lol
@HonoraryTemplar
@HonoraryTemplar 3 месяца назад
It makes sense too since Griffith's position always made people view him as some diety. Of people wanting to be like him. But they never really knew him. The scene with him washing in the river with casca is a great place for this. Griffith was granted a chance to break down and show to casca his humanity. he was willing to allow himself to be comforted but Casca was too enthralled with him she literally told him to stop. She didn't want to know, she didn't want to ruin her image of Griffith. And I believe its the reason why Griffith later on just views her as a tool to be used. Thats the difference between Griffith and Guts. Guts was open with his trauma to Casca and she accepted it and embraced it with Guts. And Guts treat her as a person instead of some object. To Griffith, she shunned it not because she didn't like him. quite the opposite. She was obsessed and because of that obsession to made Griffith to never be open about his trauma to anyone, and the most we ever get of Griffith's experience and his soul is his when he talks about his dream. Judeau knew that Griffith was a calculated man but a very troubled man that would rather chose his dream over his coming of terms with his trauma. The only time he was able to express this suffering and this burden he carried was through the eclipse. Where it was his entire life of pent up trauma that kept stacking and stacking. To which he lashed it out on Casca and Guts. Both victims of Griffith's unjust and jealous trauma.

It would have been interesting to see what would've become of Judeau if he survived the eclipse. I'd imagine his adroitness and craftiness would have served him well to ward off many apostles. Heck, he could have served as a useful "sidekick" to Guts in hunting down Griffith; he sort has similar qualities to the Tim Drake Robin, who primarily uses intellect and superior tactics to outmaneuver his opponents'. This would have eliminated the "necessity" of adding Isidro to the story (since he's acting as the proverbial Robin to Guts' Batman). Awesome video and well researched! You've gained a new sub!!!

I think Judeau still being around with Guts after the Eclipse would legitimately make things too easy for him. And I’m not even talking about dealing with the Apostles, I’m more so talking about maintaining Guts’ mental health. Like if Judeau was traveling with Guts during the Black Swordsman and Lost Children’s Arcs then he probably would have easily noticed Guts’ slow descent into insanity, and stopped him before he ended up reaching the dark place that he was in by the end of the Lost Children’s Arc. Essentially what I’m saying is that Judeau kinda had to die in order to make the story happen.
@John-kc4cg

@@KingCam20 Judeau himself might have lost some of his sanity as well though. The eclipse would have been less of a betrayal for him than Guts but he would have still been pissed at Griffith for what he did to Casca. He might have even blamed Guts for not getting out with Casca when he told him to.

@@KingCam20 I love Judeau, but I think these set of circumstance would take away from a massively core aspect of Berserk. Right up until (SPOILER!) Casca get's her mind back (SPOILER END!) the biggest thing about the story is that NO one understands Gut's pain and what he's been through except the one who caused it, the only other person that could is mentally crippled, all others who were there are dead. That's huge to the story. I think something that would kind of help accomplish the feel of what you're looking for while not taking so much away from the narrative would be a scene where somehow Gut's meets the souls of the BotH and they acknowledge they've seen everything he's gone through since the eclipse.

I think he is one of the most important characters in the Golden Age arc, when it comes to understanding the others and maybe the only Berserk character actually worth striving to be like. That's why I always installed Judeau armor mods in video games, instead of Griffith or Guts ones. Judeau is that one character that an author just happens to make stand out. There is always that one character in a series that is just as good as the main protagonist. I don’t know if we ever see him actually speaking to Griffith even once in the series besides maybe in battle. I love this video. It blew my mind when you pointed out how kentaro Miura made judeau the one to unmask Griffith after he was tortured. The fact that miura intentionally foreshadowed that is proof miura was an absolute genius writer. I feel like a big part of judeau’s character is that he wasn’t ever sure about Griffith and when he figured it out, it was already too late. Futility is a big theme for judeau’s character. He was smart and empathic enough to figure out who Griffith really was but there was no way for him to do anything about it. You can do everything right and still have it all be futile in the end. The best he could do was die protecting casca. Heavy shit, man.

I think he also sees that Guts has the potential to become better than Griffith, although he doesn’t probably understand why, or it could just be that he liked Guts more, which is odd, as Guts put up so many barriers, as he didn’t want to get close to anyone. That scene where Guts and Judeau have a conversation for the first time after Casca was ordered to keep Guts warm, when Judeau threw one of his knights straight into one of his bandmates' bathing buckets, I've always thought it was a sign of Judeau's pent-up hate bubbling to the surface just for a moment, since he did it just as he was recounting Griffith's inconsidate instructions towards Casca. One might see it as him being an absentminded prankster at first, but I think it especially makes sense after the reader learns about Judeau's feelings towards Casca far too late.

I don't think Judeau hated Griffith, but I do agree that he understood Griffith during final chapters of The Golden Age arc. Personally, I don't think there was a lot of time for hatred to build up. I do love the poignancy of the scene where Judeau sees Griffith choking Guts and realizes the hatred and envy that Griffith feels towards him. I wonder if he would have actually gone on to tend to Griffith, or if Judeau would have mercy killed him after Guts and Casca were long gone.

I disagree, I don't think Judeau hates griff, 1) j recognizing that Griffith puts up a facade 2) him recognizing that griff's dream would be more important to him than Casca doesn't mean hatred just means he's perceptive and intelligent and didn't get swept up in Griffiths charm. the scene with griff choking guts, I agree that was when he realized what kind of man griff was, however, he still wanted to continue to support griff after the band of the hawk, so it obviously wasnt enough for him to hate griff.

I disagree on that Griffith doesn't have real emotions for Casca. If he used her he used her as he uses everyone in the hawks (people he cares), it's just that he was to absorbed by Guts' presence. He cares for her while his persona/ego maintains his ideals above all including his emotions, like he has done all the time to that point
@100conquest

I think he cared to a certain extent but the flashback scene where Griffith tells casca how he felt when the kid died fighting for his dream and selling his body reveals the lack of remorse and morals he really has.

@@100conquest I mean for one side it does do that. But the main point is how much his dream meant to him to the point he oppresses his empathy and is struggling in if it is worth all those lives or not. You can pull out your microscope and say he cares for them on some level, but he's so far from normal its hard to relate to......... I like to think that Judeau looked at Casca as a brother of sorts as was the case for Guts. Dude was perhaps the best wingman for Guts to ensure that Casca would better get along with Guts. I don't think I gave enough attention to the manga for missing out the detail of Griffith choking Guts and Judeau being the one to unmask him. It gives me a good reason to read through Berserk again to catch some of the details I may have missed out on.

I don't think Judeau hated Griffith. It is more like that he knew what Griffith was capable of and was maybe even scared what would happen if Griffith used his might recklessly just to achieve his dream. Exactly what he feared became true and Griffith let himself get swallowed by his own darkness, sacrificing everything and anything to accomplish a dream, that shattered many others. A fate that was far more worse than what Judeau feared could happen.

I think judeau had really good advice for guts about casca in him telling guts to take casca away from the band of the hawk and Griffith. I think he said something along the lines of casca won't be able to leave griffith on her own will, it makes sense because Griffith literally saved casca from a life of tragedy and her payment back to Griffith was to stay by his side whether the outcome was good or bad.
