3:30 This is Opuntia ficus-indica.I have couple of them in my garden. They can be huge plants.Fruits of this Opuntia are so delicious. They are my favorite fruit.
Thanks for this, appreciate the heads up. Will try it in the ground this year but I wonder if UK summers are long or hot enough to get them to fruit. Only one way to find out!
Opuntia ficus indica is hardy to a few degrees below freezing. I kept mine growing in the ground for 3 or 4 years until this big freeze finished them all off.
Great to see the collection. I have two opuntias outdoors under cover north of you plus three agave americana varieties all doing well. Echevaria very hardy . Dryness is everything isn't it over the winter? Means even if cold they'll usually survive ✈️
I think that was a lightbulb moment for me in successfully growing arid plants - accepting that we can't control temperature (beyond a few degrees in the greenhouse) but we can control how wet the plants get. Game changer.
It is a David Quail! But I think I paid £18 for it at the BCSS national show. Visiting his garden and greenhouse is high on my list for this year though. Would love to see what older specimens he has. Have you bought from him?
Agave ferox or aloe ferox? Have not seen the former, but would be interested in trying new agave species. I have the two hardiest: Montana and ovatifolia.
@@greatnorthernexotic Yeah Agave salmiana ferox, I actually nipped to the garden centre I got it from today and looks like the ones still there have all suffered the same fate (interestingly the small agave americana they had felt solid), I knew it was only half hardy so was always going to be a risk. My plan was to plant it out under the conifers in spring and see how it got on but looks like that wont be happening now 😂 I have a very small montana and americana varigata in the plastic greenhouse which both seem to be fine.
