In this episode of DJD Reloaded, NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin dives deep into the latest controversy surrounding Austin Dillon’s playoff penalty and the move that cost him his playoff eligibility at Richmond. Martin provides a seasoned perspective on why NASCAR’s decision was fair, yet acknowledges the tough position the sport finds itself in with such calls.
Join us as Mark Martin reflects on the evolution of NASCAR, discussing how the sport has shifted from pure racing to a focus on entertainment, and why this change has been both a blessing and a curse. He opens up about the need for a strong authority figure in NASCAR, the ongoing importance of safety, and the fine line between aggressive racing and crossing the line.
This is a must-watch for any NASCAR fan looking to understand the complexities and challenges facing the sport today.

The current format is one where a driver could literally win 30 of the first 35 races of the season & then get Hail Meloned or Stenhoused at Phoenix & lose the championship to a bum who was 32nd in points with a single win before the playoffs started. That is an absolute fail on NASCAR's part, they need to go back to season long Winston Cup era points with more points for poles and victories & laps led....

Poles should not equal points. Bur yeah this system is a joke!
@russellroth5718
@russellroth5718 27 дней назад
The current format is all about entertainment, not racing. The stages have made it so much about fuel mileage and not necessarily about the best car and driver in the race. Also, as you mentioned, the points format makes it so someone who gets hot for one or two races at the end can win a championship over some really good cars and drivers who ran good all season long. Oh yeah, and the green white checkered is just stupid, but it keeps the casual fan entertained. The best car in the race this week was Austin Dillon and he should have won under caution, avoiding all the BS at the end.

Mark Martin is absolutely correct. Given the playoff format, the restart lineup that eliminates earned advantage for leader, the infusion of huge amounts of cash, the increase of beaurocracy with controls and the loss of brand identity intended to make car specifications and teams 'the same' while reducing incentives and stifling their ability to compete, what is now nascar may not be any improvement at all. I stopped watching or supporting the Cup Series several years ago when guys in suits dictated what, how and where racers were to race in order to broaden the fan base in order to have a better quarter in the board room. Super tracks and big money hasn't help make nascar cup racing any easier or more enjoyable for fans, teams, OEMs or sponsors.

All that needed to change was an adjustment to the points structure. Give a bigger bonus for winning and only give points to the top 20 finishers. Nothing was wrong with the racing before the chase. What got boring was Bristol when everyone in the top 10 just rode around to make the playoffs instead of racing anyone. I haven’t watched a race or followed the sport in many years. Tell me a single driver that’s more respected in the garage than Mark Martin. Now for his points of view. I agree with roughly 90% of his opinions. The only part I don’t is that Joey’s fine was steep at $50,000. Due to his reckless actions/attitude on pit road, I firmly believe it should’ve been $250,000. Is that steep? Yes. Will that set a real example of individual conduct and safety standards on pit road? Yes. I also believe he should be on probation for his conduct. I have the utmost respect for, Mark Martin. I agree with some of what he says, however I will disagree with a few points. First, I can't believe Hall of Famer , Mark Martin felt bad for NASCAR having to make a decision. Really? Second, every local short track in America has double wide restarts. Double wide restarts might be the only reason local short track stock car racing is still going on today. Car count has dropped so much at every level of stockcar racing is at a a miserable low since the late 90's. You have to keep it exciting for the fans. Third, all racecar drivers throw temper tantrums. It's when and how they tantrum is the area of concern. I will finish with, there was s still a "Win or Wreck" mentality that is pervasive in racing.

"Nascar deemed that he stepped over the line. He [Austin] didn't know that when he made the move . . ." Mark Martin says it best. -- The race was a snooze up until the end of the race. My husband was watching the Astros game and I was playing a game on my phone. The end made the whole race worth it! Late caution, we've seen it a thousand times. I love the shootout format. Austin had the car - no question. My opinion would be completely different had Austin been racing to the end against clean racers. HE WAS NOT!!! Denny and Joey have done the same over and over, getting to the finish line. Because they are the cool kids, it's brushed off. They (and others) did what they had to do to get the win. Nascar made this decision based on social media and popularity. Denny and Joey got a dose of karma, Nascar. Let the boys race!!! I hope that the appeal takes the above quote into consideration.
