The All Blacks are no longer the kings of international rugby, with the Springboks reigning supreme over world rugby with four Rugby World Cup titles, following their victory over New Zealand in the 2023 final in Paris.
It's Only Sport host Martin Devlin is joined by former New Zealand Rugby CEO David Moffett and esteemed Kiwi sports broadcaster Brendan Telfer, who offering differing views on the decider.
David Moffett shares his distaste with World Rugby and believes the match was marred by poor officiating, while Brendan Telfer feels all the calls made were fair and the right team won.

Just a note to all complaining about the ref. In the final all cards were because of TMO referals. Most of them 3 to 4 stages of play later. After the review the TMO, linesman and ref made a call based on consensus on application if rules and fitted penalty. Kudos to the ref for a job well done.

Good comment This is a big challenge for rugby to address and after a World Cup, before a new cup cycle gathers energy is the time for decisions and clear evaluations. in the "old days" (ie, a couple of years ago) the ref would make the final call in the game, and leave any citing to the blazers within the following 24 hours. Pound-to-a-penny, for the Cane tackle that was red-carded, Barnes would have given yellow or even just a penalty. Is it time to return to the on-field calls being King? Also, notice there was no HIA protocols for either player despite a "high degree of danger" Is there a logic that TMOs get to decide if players must leave the field for assessments? I really hope not, but the logic is for this to also happen.... seems like rugby is ebbing away

All players need to learn how to tackle, captains especially..!!. Where did these high tackles come from ? All of a sudden, head/shoulder on head contact is the norm, and then players whinge about concussion. Imagine you conceded only 5 penalties to 10, had many kickable penalties, but decided to go for touch and you still trying to blame everything else but yourself. NZ had opportunity after opportunity to win this game. If NZ won, the officiating would have been on point. We saw this whinging after the 35-7 as well. Nobody complains about the officiating. It is New Zealand who talks about it - as expected and not the world. There was nothing wrong with the game. NZ wants to play it their way and they expect the world to adapt to their way. They think it is only their way that is beautiful. We love our way. We love our mauls, defense, kicking, scrums etc.. The Kiwis always have a lot to say when people complain about officiating, but as soon as they lose, they are probably the worst in the world at it. If the shoe fits, right?? Keep whinging, it is pathetic, but heck, it is good entertainment.

@@simonjeffs75 Yet the current complaints stem from the refereeing of the Final game and not rugby in general. At the beginning of his discussion he literally said all the headlines are about the red card. Not in the tournament or in rugby in general but in this specific game. Does that make him wrong? No one was making complaints about the refs or tmo's prior to the world cup but when everyone felt they were on the end of a bad decision you started seeing it from the French/Irish/English and now NZ too. So whether or not Rassie was doing it with regards to his team in reality so is everyone else. As a Bok, I agree with a number of the points raised. The referee should not be a spectator beholden to the TMO's. The AB's were phenomenal despite the loss. Much respect.

So in other words you agree with a number of the points but also disagree? The ref is only a person who can't see everything, giving the help through the TMO just makes sense. isn't that what the touch judges are for ? there's already 3 refs on the park, they don't need a tmo yabbering in the refs ear picking everything up from 10 minutes ago and wasting 4 or 5 minutes of rugby to go back to a missed minor infringement, it's screwing the game up even more than the rule changes have already made a mockery out of rugby.

When we won the 2019 they said we were the worst team to win the final now we won because of the ref. Not so long ago Matt was talking about how world rugby should make new rules against the 7/1 split mind you they also complained about the 6/3 split. Nothing the Boks do will ever gain the world's respect. There are so many calls that SA feels should have gone their way but we said nothing. I am most disappointed by some NZ fans who believe the same despite the amount of respect and following they have here in SA. Reality is NZ didn't use their chances to secure the game. Not a sidestepping flash-dancer, just a WARRIOR who does 3 men's work and never ever gives up. 28 tackles in one game. Yes, it would be nice if we were celebrating Will Jordan or Cheslin Kolbe as Player of the Match, but in finals it's so often not that way. (2011 - Player of the Match Thierry Dusatoir). It's a very familiar scene this: after an anti-climactic WC final the plaudits have a philosophical discussion about the state of the game. But let's be honest, when Super Rugby, Heineken Cup, Rugby Championship, Six Nations starts up again - we will see loads of tries and this discussion will fade! Cue 4 years from now - NZ edge out England/ Ireland/ SA in a World Cup Final 15-11, and we'll all listen to the same discussion! (Except it'll be the losing team leading the discussion)

I wasn’t going to post about the New Zealand fans being sore losers because I have a lot of Kiwi friends but it’s getting ridiculous. Here are the facts that need to be understood, swallowed and digested. The best team did not lose, the best team won. That’s how it works. 1. You had 61% possession but failed to convert it into points 2. There is no referee conspiracy 3. There is no bribery and corruption 4. You missed 2 kicks - we missed 0 5. You got 1 yellow card and 1 Red 6. We got 2 yellow cards 7. We out muscled you on the field with immense defence 8. You confidently decided to kick for the corner when points were on offer 9. You made numerous handling errors 10. Your ill discipline cost you at vital moments 11. Some calls didn’t go your way but that’s rugby and it happens 12. Some calls didn’t go our way either 13. Certain decisions cost you big You have no one to blame but yourselves. It’s time to get honest and clear with yourselves, admit you lost fair and square and congratulate your old foe and leave it at that. We have lost to you numerous times and we have never cried foul like this. We take the loss on the chin and move on. This is not your last rodeo and you will be back to beat us once more. The Boks are world champions after one hell of a battle. We have nothing but immense respect for the Kiwis. Don’t tarnish it with the sore loser antics and moaning. I lived in NZ for 9 years and still am astounded by the whinging when the All Blacks lose. It is sad and sickening. If the All Blacks won , there would be no talk about officiating. The two tackles were both offences , but the rules allow for mitigating factors. Anyone that cannot see the difference between Kolisi's tackle and Cane's tackle are sour losers.
@ThirdEye_oOo
@ThirdEye_oOo 8 месяцев назад
I agree but I can see at least two mitigating factors in Cane's tackle too, per the head contact process: Effort to wrap/bind and no time to adjust; Sudden or significant drop in height or change in direction from ball carrier. Sam Cane wasn't expecting Kriel to cut towards him suddenly (and Kriel was even descending) and that's when the admittedly poor tackle technique occurred. Yellow appropriate but I see plenty of mitigation there to prevent the red card threshold. The same kind of mitigation that was correctly applied to Kolisi's tackle

Captains yellow cards and who was upgraded to red and who wasn't... The Savia incident where the ref admitted he was wrong, costing the All Blacks the game. We saw Aaron smith's try disallowed due to the TMO's overriding the on field refs call of no knock on, again costing the AB's the game. we saw a Bok Prop take out Aaron smith without the ball without play being stopped and the offending prop yellow carded. Boks slowed the game down significantly throughout the 80 minutes yet the ref called full time right on the 80??? Yes the All Blacks missed two kicks and didn't play their game as much as they could have. Yes the Boks played well with 15 men & the support of the TMO's and Ref, which gave them the game. But what is done is done and whinging about it won't change the outcome. Enjoyed the Pool games, quarters and Semis. Then not pulling up the Bok's prop for pulling Smith into a scrum without the ball that everyone saw (taking a man out of play without the ball, sinical play, yellow card offence, yet the TMO's remained quiet? Strange how all the TMO calls went against the AB's? if unbiased and bad judges then should have been calls against both sides, But I'll remember to grow up and close my eyes or at least one eye, like some other people. The Ab's could have still won the game despite being down a man and against multiple bad calls but thats the way it went, barnes ended the match right on 80 miutes rather than playing on for all the Bok's injury time tactics but thats the way it went. The AB's are discriminated against due to being from a small country that wups the big countries on a regular basis Love them or hate them the adjudicating shouldn't be that biased in any game. Up grading Cane's yellow which was from a player dropping down on to his shoulder on contact, While Kilosi lead with his head on an upward trajectory? The Boks won due to help, good on them, But I wouldn't be surprised if there is an investigation into the TMO's actions. Barnes apologising to Ardie saying i got it wrong when he penalised him for holding on when on the big screen Barnes saw Ardie clearly release the player before going for the ball. Barnes allowed that penalty and SA kicked the penalty goal. 3. TMO's looking for faults at the breakdown, you could call a neck roll in literally 50% of the cleanouts at the ruck in every game not just this game. 4. Barnes called play on from the Lineout that happened prior to the disallowed try, the TMO went and reviewed and in all the replays its not clear that Ardie touches the ball with his hand. Barnes called play on and the TMO intervened anyway and it isnt clear at all. In my opinion the TMO has been compromised in some way, he was obviously doing what he could to ensure a NZ loss

Tonight on our rugby show “super rugby” they showed us that in your tri that were aloud there were also a forward pass. You didn’t play that well up until Kane was red carded. As Ardie said it galvanised your team. So what he is saying there is that it lifted the team. And you played beter. After this game I had emails coming in from America. Friends and associates in the US had watched a rugby game for the first time live and it was a World Cup final. All of these emails had one theme; after the first few minutes they stopped watching as the game was clearly rigged. New Zealand were not allowed to win. World Rugby dropped the ball big time. On a personal note, a trend I detect says the TMO allows the weaker team to win. If we look at the influence of the TMO, the delays allow the weaker team to reorganise and take a breather. If we look at this tournament, the weaker team often won; doubt this? Check Ireland v All Blacks, France v South Africa, All Blacks v South Africa. In every case, on the day the weaker team prevailed. The TMO was the architect.

Moffett is absolutely correct. Telfer needs to think long and hard about his views. I have been an avid Rugby fan for 60 years. That final was the last rugby game I will watch. It was a farce. The TMO turned it into a travesty of justice. Gross unfairness. Telfer doesnt want to ditch the TMO. I disagree. Unless we get rid of it and return to the referee being the sole arbiter we will destroy the game. Moffett says the reason for the TMO is to staunch the coming injury litigation. Well we need to think about that. Rugby is a hard physical game and damaged knees, shoulders and even spines are part of that. The sole function of the TMO should be to pick up on dirty play. Leave the interpretation of the game to the referee. I am a stong advocate for dumping the IRB and all thier woke nonsense. Start a Kerry Packer style World Rugby Series and invite countries to participate. Have knockout games at home and then have a World Cup every 4 years with 8 or maybe 16 teams participating. Much like the World soccer cup. I really feel for Foster and Cane. They were victims of a stupid system of absurd rules. Lets have the guts to have an open forum on this. Your man Moffett needs to wake up. World Rugby is under pressure to prevent serious head injuries (it already has legal action from ex players in process) - so the TMO checking actions and advising the on-field ref, rather than going to TMO for every whistle as we had a year or two ago, is the future. The game now flows, illegal hits as a general rule don't get missed. The performances of Wayne Barnes and the TMO team (3-4 of them) has been lauded in every neutral country from Ireland to France to Wales to England and more - the only country complaining (whingeing?) is NZ, including Ian Foster in the post match press meet, regrettably. Your man Brendan was spot on. Just because VAR in soccer isn't working so well is not a reason to throw out rugby's TMOs - it's a reason to improve soccer's VARs. What TV picked up was that the "second" NZ try which Barnes awarded without checking upstairs, actually had a forward pass - so it goes both ways. Bottom line: best team on the day won.

The biggest 'problem' on Saturday - and the one before - was the weather. The answer? Follow the very clever Welsh and put roofs on the stadia. But I totally agree with David Moffett - and full marks to him, someone at last agrees with me! - is to fix the breakdown and the tackle height. My solution? Just go back to the 2016 proposed rules that the NZRU squashed because it didn't suit their one-dimensional way of playing where 75% of their tries come from turnovers, which is what the existing rules encourage, along with head injuries, too much kicking and so on.

It's the players job to keep it a spectacle. The referee's job to inforce rules. Yellow cards were according to the rules. The Red was for not even trying to go low. Three easy rule changes: player must attempt to remain upright during tackle, and a lot of head contact is guys lowering head, tackle must start below nipple line, and scrum penalties become an uncontested scrum to force teams to run the ball but still give a strong scrum value as when they force penalisable mistakes the team is assured a clean ball, and making the scrum what it was intended for a game restart. Remove knock ons at base of rucks and off first contact in a line out there is no advantage gained and knock on is really there to penalize player that cannot catch.
