People in the comments don't seem to know MasterChef contestants aren't professional chefs, they're usually home cooks. So people who have an interest and passion for food but aren't professionally trained
Not professionally trained but at the very least knows the basics, practiced at home, watched videos, or whatever... Masterchef always does fish challenges. Shouldn't you be prepared if you wanna win?
@@sunnybananny5737 even professional chefs aren't experts in every cooking and baking skill. Maybe it just wasn't her area and she just didn't do much of it at home. I wouldn't say filleting salmon is a basic skill for a home chef. She probably had some other skill she was confident would give her a chance to win
@@ree3492 @ree3492 ugh who said anything about daily cooking?... you're joining a competition, you have to at least prepare. Not saying it has to be that big when you try or practice. She said it herself, "I don't do fishies"... all I'm saying is come prepared, not necessarily expert.
I had no idea, I always thought the show was about professional cooks competing. But tbf I usually just watched small sections of the episodes on TV and clips on RU-vid so I'm not a proper fan of the show
That explains a lot about some clips I’ve seen. That been long said, now I’m interested in watching for myself. It’s fun seeing people try to make something they’ve never done before
I’d say it’s pretty impressive how home cooks broke down the fish given they haven’t done it before. Plus people stating that it’s not supposed to be done in a sawing motion is right… but the first two used a chef’s knife and the last one used a pairing knife. You want to use a filet knife for fishes which makes it easier since it tends to be sharper and thinner. But the chef’s knife and pairing knife would make filleting a fish hard. Edit: Thanks for all the likes! ❤
@@NKatz both are acceptable but fish is more commonly used, fishes is more appropriate when talking about multiple species of fish but still acceptable to use fishes regardless
@@Lunaskylettethat's funny you say that. I've never filleted a fish either, but, I would have listened to Gordon's advice when he says to run the blade across the back bone, and let the blade do the work. I would have triedbmy best, to mimick his demo video, on his channel.
The program is called MasterChef not MasterChefs, means the ONE contestant would win and become a MasterChef AFTER the show. The participants are all homecooks not some professional. They come to the show not only for competition but to learn as well. Seems like people missed that point of the show.
Cut her some slack, it was her first time fileting a fish. And I'm sure she didn't know she had to cook a fish. Yall gotta stop hating and show some love
Why does no one realise that they are NOT chef’s. Y’all are criticising them but these are all home cooks who go onto this show to BECOME a “MasterChef”.
Respect to these ladies for adapting and taking on the challenges ❤ You start somewhere. Masterchef is about home cooks trying new things and learning and they’re doing the best they can.
You need to slice in one move, not up and down like that. That will make not even slice textures on surface of the fish meat. Also, your knife must be very sharp and slightly point the side of the knife downwards touching the fish's bone
How is everyone in this comment section smart enough to leave a comment complaining but not smart enough to read for context? She's a home cook not a chef.
shes a home cook with access to the internet and so many prior seasons. The issue isn't that shes not an amazing master at it. The issue is she hasnt done it once.... its not the stone age where if you're entering a cooking competition you dont have access to info on things you might need to know and atleast try it once so you have a reference point of error.
@@silverfire808isn't the reason they're there because they want to learn? And plus I'm like 90% sure they never told them what the challenge is so they don't have time to prepare (i could be wrong tho)
@@silverfire808 you do realize it costs HUNDREDS of dollars to buy a whole salmon? what home cook is buying a giant fish just to practice? just because you watch gordon ramsay doesn't make u an expert. there's a difference between the internet and real life bro. u should check it out.
@@julietravelvlog You don't need to buy an entire salmon to practice fundamentals of filleting. A lot of the core basics of breaking down a smaller fish will transfer to a larger one. Again, the issue is not that they arent well practiced, its that they have 0 (key word ZERO) experience to reference. Even doing it once, even breaking down just one medium sized fish of similar structure like trout gives a good reference point so they atleast know what theyre looking for and what can go wrong.
Not gonna lie, she is right, that's a big ass fish, cutting it that way is definitely hard. Possibly doing it from both sides wpuld be easier but well it's for judges
In the American version they would typically show the cooks how to do something like this first, not just let them run in blind. I think they may have specifically done a salmon demo even.
I may missed some steps but what i can recall from culinary school is you scale the fish, cut behind the gill to belly until you feel bone, chop near tail until bone, insert fisj knife into first cut and slide done the spine of the fish. Then repeat on other side.
Master Chefs whole premise is seeing who can learn the easiest... Any of you can join it with basic food knowledge.... That's literally the point of the show.
ik alot of ppl are criticizing bc she cant filet a fish but i feel like it could make sense.... like if a chef is more focused on meat they will know most about that, or with fish, or maybe even with vegan or vegetarian foods.... ofc they will probably need to know the rest at some point but if that isnt what their profession revolves around then they probably wont be familiar with it (kinda like when artists are expected to be able to draw or paint anything but in reality theres ppl who specialize in a specific thing and cant really do the rest.... like character, animal, landscape, plants, abstract or even with mediums like painting, drawing, digital art, sculpting, etc.) not sure the examples are the same but its just a thought i had that maybe chefs also specialize in certain things but arent the best or just arent familiar with things out of their profession
Well she joined a competition that is known to have variety of challenges to measure their skills and worthiness to be called a Masterchef... This challenge isn't the first time ever in the show, so she should've at least prepared herself for this. Maybe not her expertise, but at the very least she has the basic knowledge how to do it, like the right knife, position, etc.
@@Bella-wp7wz but what if someone doesn't cook fish... like if their family and them don't eat fish and they work at a restaurant or some place that isn't seafood based
My jaw dropped when she started butchering that fish 😭😭😭 I’m genuinely scared if she even checked for pin bones cuz it looks like she didn’t but then again the clip had a lot of cuts so 😭
You mean fillet fish at least if you’re going to degrade people at least say it right MasterChef is all about bringing home cooks that do not have degrees or not in restaurants and then put them to the test and battle each other. That’s the whole point.
Funnily enough, she is literally butchering that fish 😂 that’s what the act of breaking down any animal is referred as. We may make a distinction with fish being separate from land animals in our minds, but the term is the same
Yeah I don't think whales typically prepare fish. I dunno what kinda nature documents you've been watching but you probably should look for better ones. Also learn basic decency and manners while you're at it
@@confetti3503 my basic manners and decency extend to respecting my body not stuffing my face. Whales spend large proportions of their lives amongst fish so would be anatomically accustomed. Stop being so sensitive and go to the gym.
