In a random act of kindness from Charles Cline at the Candela Research Center, he sent me 3 engines. See and hear them run,the THRUST tests, the disassembly of the Saito 100 4 stroke, and why.
Email Clinecandela@gmail.com for more information on the test stands.

I really do enjoy watching you conduct these experiments on these vintage motors. No matter what the issue, you always manage to get to the core of it and solve the problem. I’ve always been very impressed by that which has led me to believe that you can literally fix almost anything! That test stand was really cool as well. I can’t wait to see the Aeromaster fly with that big engine. I also remember that crash with the 46 ( or was it 47?) many years ago. Lots of “vintage” in this video, love it! Semper Fi sir.

13:04 Aeromaster Bipe+4-Stroke=Baddass power to spare my uncle had a O.S. 120 4-Stroke with Pump swinging a 14 or 15 mich prop on it? Boy he would take off from the grass with less then half throttle and fly it with a littlebit close to half he had tons of power whenever he needed it on his Great Planes Super Aeromaster but never had too it ever stunt he could with just that speed alone. Fantastic job on the video Dave I sure wish I could fly my nitro O.S.46 AX with CCP on my Mojo 40 again this year but sadly whenever place I go with people weather being from a club or not start crying about the noise granted I'm not flying it really running it early in the morning or late at night but just plain old ''cry babies'' saying to me'' why don't you convert it to electric or use a normal muffler bluh,bluh'' so really I have no choice but to fly my electrics instead which aren't the same as nitro power the flight time and yes I love the smell of burning glow fuel too😁😁😁😁

I'm with you for sure. I am also not a fan of also trying to fly pattern while there are 5 guys in the air with their hovering airplanes. You know, if you fly a helicopter, hovering airplanes comes naturally easy, but they think it is impressive and don't mind hogging the field. Thanks much and stay well.

One of those Cox engines is not a Cox engine. The one with that different glow head is a very rare .03 G Mark engine. I have one without the throttle

Good going Dave!! I'm wondering if the Saito was setup for Counter Clockwise rotation. Glad you got running well, its like a mini Harley!
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer Год назад
I thought that too, but it just wouldn't suck fuel either way. And Charles made a comment above that he took it apart and didn't put it together right, so that was that. Yep, vibrates like a Harley. Thanks LLoyd.
@davelowets
@davelowets Год назад
If it WAS set up for CCW rotation, it WOULD have required a cam swap to get it to run in the CW direction... No amount of re-timing a cam made for CCW rotation would allow it to run in the opposite direction. It would require a totally different cam, specifically made for reverse operation. The same cam can't be used interchangeably.
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer Год назад
@@davelowets That's right. Only Cox 2 stroke reed valve engines or similar, could run either direction.
@lloydromeo3860
@lloydromeo3860 Год назад
@@davelowets Your right, I looked into that. There is a different cam available for CCW. It looked like the lobes could be moved via a setscrew, but maybe not. Also there are some that claim you can swap intake and exhaust port for reverse rotation, however screw sizes don't seem to be interchangeable. Have you tried any of the above?
@davelowets
@davelowets Год назад
@@lloydromeo3860 No I haven't... I don't have any experience with that exact model 4-Stroke, but I have done alot of work on many others, and I've never seen cam lobes that can be adjusted with a set screw, but that doesn't mean that they dont exist... 🤷🏻

Hey Dave, i've been sub'ed for a long time but don't comment much. You and I are on the same page and similar age. I want to make 2 points: A, Saito ... The only Saito I have is a .56. All of my other four strokers are OS. That little .56 is such a fussy little ##@%^ that I refuse to use it any more. It's in good shape, timing is right, glow plug is OS-F but it won't behave on anything less than 15% nitro! My OS engines will run nicely on FAI. And the main needle adjustment is so touchy that one click either way is almost too much either way. I've had too many dead sticks to trust it :( B, Nitro. I am not trying to be a smart ass but I simply don't know how "glow engines" became "nitro engines". In the old days when I was flying control line we never heard of "nitro". We bought methyl hydrate and castor oil at the pharmacy and mixed our fuel 80/20 and proceeded to have too much fun! Where did the term "nitro engine" come from?
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer Год назад
Well, I have been flying for over 65 years and we called it gas. So many "woke" people said I was wrong, so I use the word nitro. I run 20% Nitro in my engines and they all run well. We used to mix our own fuel and sometimes I used 40% nitro in my pylon racing days with Caster but changed to Klotz Oil synthetic which is cleaner. I have a Saito 120 in my Big J-3 cub and it runs great as well. A standard glow plug will not work, as it has to be long enough to reach in the chamber, and then it will stay hot. As you saw, this 100 idles perfectly. But In my planes, I always install a glow driver on board anyway. Never had a dead stick with that setup. I have had several 4 strokes, including the OS 46 and I loved them, but they were destroyed in the fire, and I especially miss the Kalt .45. So thanks for the encouragement and know the term Nitro was probably invented by the woke crowd that thinks Hovering airplanes and hogging the field, is cool. Hovering airplane is really easy, for us Heli Pilots, but that is the fixed wing flyers way of saying they can hover. I miss the old days too. LOL. Thanks.
@robertcovell2787
@robertcovell2787 Год назад
@@NightFlyyer Ok thanks, that is a reasonable explanation. As I said, the Saito 56 is the only four stroke I have problems with and I do run the correct OS-F plug. All of my other four strokers , 5 in total, run great! On board glow is an option but one I'd rather avoid if possible. 20% nitro is out of the question. I will not spend good money on any more than 10%, but then I'm flying glow exclusively so the cost of fuel is a big factor. I don't own a gasoline or electric plane. Not that I'm opposed to them, just that I have box full of great engines. 2 and 4 stroke so why not use them? My favorite 2 stroke is K&B .61. I have four of them! I have to limit myself to what I can squeeze into my car so my 1/4 J3 is as big as I go.

The second engine does not seem to be a Cox, it os rather similar to a G-Mark. 030
@NightFlyyer

It is a early Cox as I found out.
@davelowets
@davelowets Год назад
Wouldn't a guy somehow have to recalibrate the test stand for the differeing weights of the engines that are mounted on it? Some of those engines are MUCH heavier than the others, and hang quite a bit further forward, putting more or less weight at different distances from the pivot point. This fact would change the ratio of force put on the scale just from the weight difference alone.
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer Год назад
Just adjust the Tare Weight to zero on the scale after mounting the engine. (this eliminates any weight differences) Then the result is accurate. Engine forward or back creates the same thrust. But you can contact Candela Research center to find out more. Good Question!.
