St. Thomas the Apostle is believed to have travelled to Kerala and set the foundation of Christianity in India after the death of Jesus Christ. Is this a true story or only a tradition? This video explores the fascinating story of St. Thomas, the beginning of Christianity in India and attempts to distinguish facts from fiction.
The video based on the book QUEST FOR THE HISTORICAL THOMAS APOSTLE OF INDIA, a Re-reading of the Evidence. By Fr. George Nedungatt SJ tries to analyse all the theories surrounding the tradition of St. Thomas. Beginning from the meaning of the term 'India', we look at the apocryphal work 'Acts of Thomas' and the writings of Church Fathers. Other popular theories include that of St. Bartholomew and Thomas of Kinayi. We then consider the rich and diverse Indian Tradition which includes the tradition centring around Taxila and then proceeds to look at the South Indian traditon revolving around the tomb at Mylapore and the miracles and works of St. Thomas.

The Portuguese burnt plenty of literature of Syrian Christians in the 16th century and tried their best to destroy the faithful in Kerala by manipulation and force which continues till today by the Vatican in Rome. I felt that this was another attempt by an outsider of Kerala to again confuse and destroy the faith of St. Thomas Apostle's arrival in India which is surprising because the Jews were in Kerala after the destruction of Solomons temple and Apostle Thomas first evangelised those Jews who settled here some 1000 years ago before the arrival of Thomas. Its sad to see such videos which try to twist the truth by saying Ethiopia was India because Kerala had trade relations with Middle East for thousands of years before Thomas came so India was known to him and others.

I am a St. Thomas Christian from Kothanalloor, Kottayam. I have no doubt about the fact that St. Thomas came to India and Malabar. There are many ancient churches around my home including Marth Marium Church - Kuraviland of 2nd Century, Old Kaduthuruthy Church of 4th Century, Muttuchira Holy Ghost Church of 5th Century and my parish - the Kothanallor Church of 8th Century. There are enough stories about each churches that transferred through generations which provides proof about our rich heritage and history.

Dear Father, Thanks for sharing an excellent video. In ancient Anuradhapura (SriLanka), a cross was found carved on a rock. Dated, I believe to be around 4th century, it's the same design as the Syrio-Malabar Cross in your video. Today it's part of the Catholic flag of Sri Lanka. Like St Joseph Vaz, in ancient times Christianity came to our island through India. God bless

My house in St. Thomas Mount is just about 50 feet away from the place there is monument on the steps up the St. Thomas Mount to mark his place where he was speared. The Portugese in their religious fervour did build several churches to mark as place of miracle or sanctity. Hence, these monuments need not necessarily authenticate the history. However, the presence of large number of Indian Christians owing their faith to the evangelization ministry of Thomas the Apostle, definitely lends credence to the theory of Thomas having ministered in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, especially.

Whether Thomas came to Kerala or not can be debated. But Syrian Christians use Syriac in their liturgy. Thus there was an early connection between Kerala n Syria in the first 5 centuries. Predating European Christianity.

Thank you for this presentation. You mentioned "Nasrani" but did not elaborate on that other than saying that it was a term used by Arab Muslims, which is correct. In fact, Nasrani comes from the Koranic-Arabic word Nasara (نَصَـٰرَىٰ ) which means "Christian" in the Koran. Arabic-speaking Christians refer to themselves as "Masihi" (مسيحي), which means "Messiah-follower". "Nasara" comes from the name of the hometown of Jesus Christ, Nazareth, which in Hebrew is נָצְרַת (Natsrat) and in Arabic is ناصرة (Nāṣira). Nasrani, therefore, means "Nazarene".

@deepthipv4689
@deepthipv4689 Год назад
Nasrani is an Aramaic word, not Arabic word. Quran came almost 600 years after Christianity. When St.Thomas came to India, at 52 AD, there were no term as Christian. The word Nasrani was used to call the followers of the Jesus of Nazareth, so the Thomas Christians(who accepted faith through St.Thomas)are called as Nasranies till now. It has nothing to do with Quran and Arabic language . The term Nasrani existed before Quran itself and so keeping it as reference is not right, for me..

"Natsrat"? Even today that place is called "Nazaret" in Hebrew
@SanjayFGeorge
@SanjayFGeorge 10 месяцев назад
Christians all over the world used to be called Nasrani by others before the term was coined in Antioch. But the Arabs continued to call them that. This may be why Christians in Malaysia are called Srani. This is why ISIS agents marked the houses of Assyrian and Chaldean Christians with the Arab letter "Noon" just before an invasion. ---+--- The first recorded use of the term (or its cognates in other languages) is in the New Testament, in Acts 11 after Barnabas brought Saul (Paul) to Antioch where they taught the disciples for about a year, the text says that "the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch" (Acts 11:26).

We never see visible proof of St Thomas visit to India due to he came to India 2000 years ago not to built or not to write any book. Thomas came to India to spread Gospels to Indians. Thomas bring many Jews, upper and lower caste Hindus in Kerala to God path. Now we all proudly say we believed in one true God. PPL who don't believe in this we can ignore them. There are lots of fool ppl questions even existence of Jesus Christ. Let we continue the evangelisation st. Thomas started in India.

Thank you. I enjoyed seeing all the diverse evidence put together in one project, and in such a concise presentation! I think of faith as a trust, and I want to trust in what is "amen" - what is fixed, steadfast, reliable, unwavering ... "nailed" into place. These relate to a Hebrew word also for "true" or "truth" or "trustworthy". Since I can't see that any of these ideas of St. Thomas' possible work in India meets the standard that those adjectives signify, I can't say that I have any faith either way. Where my faith does lie is in the God of Israel and his anointed king Jesus of Nazareth, who do meet the standard that those adjectives signify. The Holy Trinity is trustworthy, and that is where my faith conviction rests secure. There is an interplay relationship whereby the one who trusts is trustworthy to the one deserving of trust, and the one deserving of trust is be definition trustworthy. This is our faith and loyalty relationship as Christians, and reflects the faithfulness and loyalty of Jesus the Messiah.

It is easy to see that the Catholic faith has struggled hard in India and have a feeling will not last much longer due to religious pressures both inside and outside the Faith. We now have a Pope that may the death nail to the Catholic Church. India has a rich history of philosophy and the Hindus bore some good examples of the best in virtues, loyalties, and stowic strengths that helped in conversions to Jesus because it was already built in them, making Christanity easy to take in. India can bear great minds to the Faith and may even save it from heresy if only the hardships of Politics can ease a bit, but that is in the deepest of wells unable too find water. Thank You So Much.

I love the Miracle of Thomas the story of which you relate. It was so philosophical yet physical, proving nothing and everything. The Brahmins should have been flattered that it was given to them -- but it was a sword, dividing those able to accept it as an affirmance of One God from those to proud to accept the nullification of their traditions.

The British Encyclopedia also greed this historical event. You might have heard an opinion from Our Late Holiness Pope Benedict 16th that St. Thomas didn't Come to India. I would assume that the reason that there is a dearth of archeological evidence to support the evangelization of St. Thomas in Kerala is because of the destruction of the ancient St. Thomas Christian Churches by the Portuguese in support of the Catholic Church. This is a well-documented event and I believe there is a BBC documentary on the subject. It would be apt if you could also delve on the atrocities committed in the name of the Catholic Church that subjugated an entire denomination of Christians, destroyed their traditions, their ancient libraries, were subjugated for over 150 years and from where the ancient Christians had to literally fight for their independence. Imagine over 1600 years of history and culture burnt down. Priests and leaders killed. It was nothing short of a genocide. All that remains is the oral tradition and the long lineage of those Christian families hanging onto the vestiges of that once glorious tradition. Wolves in sheep's clothing indeed. Its frankly frustrating to listen to the oppressor talking about the absence of that very proof that they destroyed. I am living proof!

Yes St Thomas was in India. My great great grandfather related how he and St Thomas use to hang out at the local Nair tea stall those days.

It was a wonderful search to establish if St: Thomas had come to India to preach the gospel first। If we are confirmed that all other 11disciples went to 11 different country or places of the world, it surely be St Thomas who came and preach the gospel, because someone did it, as a general understanding।

+ A.M.D.G. I have known about this since my mother-in-law stayed with Bridgetine nuns while we were house-hunting in 1974 --- but i would love to know more ---- i also remember when the Gospel of St Thomas was printed while I did a holiday job in Harrod's book department in 1960 (?)

Significant information and well presented; thank you. Jesus commanded his followers to go into all the world and make disciples --and God would promote it. Lively trade between Mediterranean ports and Parthia existed; Roman coins are found in southern India.

The message is important than the carrier. St. Thomas was the carrier. His message was Christ. The beauty is none of the Apostles or anyone of Christ's followers claimed that Jesus vanquished all his enemies and became the King or anything similar to that theory. No body claimed superiority in winning rather everyone spoke of love and forgiveness. This is true across the world. There is universal consent on the main message of what Jesus Christ did or say and they are compatible with our commonsense too. The problem with seeking evidence for historical happenings is, they can always be contradicted with another evidence. So why bother? I am happy with the message and I am grateful to whoever be the person who brought them here to India.

Well presented. History is always nebulous. Narratives are made. It is those who practice their faith who sustain the narrative.

I was listening to readings of the visions of St. Catherine of Emmerich. In one of them, she was recounting the last days of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She said that St. Thomas was late, arriving only after she had passed away and was buried, but I don't recall if it was after the Apostles discovered her body being assumed to heaven. Anyway, St. Catherine said that St. Thomas returned to India where he was killed by a spear, and that the spot where he died was on a stone that bore his knee marks. The visionary was a secluded nun living in the 18th century.

St. Thomas came to North of India starting from Edessa /Urfa via the euphrates tigris river route establishing churches in North of Iraq including Baghdad, South of Iraq in Basra, in what is now Iran, Afghanistan, what is now Pakistan and the northern parts of India and then he went back to Edessa /Urfa. Then he went to Egypt waited there for a ship to take him to south of India. He had written a book on his journey to India and it was discovered in St. Catherine's monastery in Egypt in the 18th century. The he found a ship that took him to the south of India and landed in kerala.

I’m a member of Syrian Orthodox Church in Kerala. I have serious doubts regarding St.Thomas tradition, of him having evangelized in Kerala and converted Brahmins to Christianity. Kerala, 2000 years ago was ruled by the Cheras, and Brahmanical tradition (Nambhoothiri) did not exist in that region. If St.Thomas did come to Kerala, he most probably came to evalngelize amongst the Jews who came and settled there for trading purposes. If he was sent to Kerala, he would have gone there under the behest of St.James (Jesus’ brother) of Jerusalem, who did not encourage non Jews to become Christians. Of course, what I’ve said is speculative, as I have no basis to prove or disprove this theory. I believe this Church came into existence because of extensive contacts with existing middle Eastern churches in the Semitic world!

Solid research. Agree with most findings. Except the concluding statement that Apostle Thomas will intercede for us. Jesus is the only mediator btw God the Father and human beings. Therefore there is no need for another.

We find great difficulty in the Christian history in Kerala, because of the manipulation made by the Portuguese Christian system. There are many. Eg. The city in the first century 'Palore ' in which St. Thomas preached was formated into Palayur at different place by two centuries ago. Actually St. Thomas came at Palore in search of God's people the Jews. May be their Synagogue had change into Church. He reached there by a waterway from the Arabian sea ending on the pond nearby that Church. Which was also manipulated in to Brahmin baptism theory. And another manipulated history happened against the ancient Church in Palore that a priest was killed in its Holy Altar by Tippu Sultan. That was a well-known story in that whole Taluk. The truth unearthed by three decades ago that Tippu's war against Nazranigur was in 1789,but the present Church was built in 1806. The port ' Muziris' of Pleny the elder was erased from history. It's forced to believe that place is Kodungallur. There no research and no evidence of first Chera dynasty ruled in between 3rd century BC and 300 CE. We know that the Palore city and Muziris port was ruled by them and St. Thomas came there amidst their ruling. It's the 2nd Chera dynasty moved from there to Kodungallur by fifth century.

"India" has always had extensive trade and commercial relations with many regions, including the Mediterranean world throughout the centuries and millennia. In which case it is possible that Indian traders and commercial agents native to southern India (as we know it today - Kerala) and foreign merchants who established themselves there were Christians who came from communities evangelized by St. Thomas. This seems to me a more plausible explanation for the so-called "Thomas Christians" than having the Apostle Thomas making a physical appearance in that part of present-day India.
