Dinosaur Planet. Rare’s incredibly ambitious Nintendo 64 game that was ultimately repurposed as Star Fox Adventures on the Nintendo GameCube. Should it have stayed on the N64? Well, let’s dive into a recently leaked prototype/beta build of the game and find out for ourselves.
Special thanks to the Dinosaur Planet Community Discord for helping with the research for this video!
Also, special thanks to Scott the Woz for doing a small cameo :)

God I would have loved to see that way darker and way more gigantic plot from the original, on the N64. N64 seems to have a history of canceled or drastically altered games that originally had really dark stories portrayed through these creepy low poly scaling and rotating 3D visuals making it even more unsettling, MOTHER 3 being the most well known.

Most of those games were just too ambitious for the n64 and had just too little time for them to come to fruition

I dont know why they couldn't have just had this as a spinoff of starfox. Like still have it called dinosaur planet but as like Starfox dinosaur planet instead and have it as it's own self contained story within the broader starfox universe. Krystal still could have 100% been the main character and maybe just have fox and the others be in the story but not take away from it being her as the main star of the game.

Of course Miyamoto was involved. Sometimes his decisions are just harmful. With all the information people have managed to gather we can complete Dinosaur Planet. Make it the game it was intended to be just upgraded to modern standards.

I liked Adventure, but they should’ve at the very least have labeled it as a spin-off game if they were gonna out the Star Fox label on it, that way Krystal could’ve still been the main character. I hope someone can one day can mod one of the games into a “Star Fox’s: *Dinosaur Planet”* someday because I still like many of the ideas from the N64 original. It’s not so much the fact that it’s set in the Star Fox universe that bothers me as much as it does the fact that it’s been rushed and butchered a bit by Miyamoto in general. In retrospect I can’t say I’m *too* mad about that since anymore delays would’ve cancelled the project entirely since this was made by Rare, but that just goes to show how grossly incompetent Nintendo as a whole is when it comes to management, let alone pleasing fans. I miss the days of Rareware when we got instant classics like Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. They are all still “Nintendo” characters and games to me, and are still among some of my favorite video games despite never growing up with any of them. Without Rareware, we would never have gotten the “modern” Donkey Kong and all those other characters from all of their Rareware games. Characters like Conker are just as important as the original Donkey Kong arcade game itself, and I’m so sad and frustrated that the majority of their library and characters either get left behind or completely forgotten/disregarded. No words in the English dictionary can even describe how heartbroken I was when Conker wasn’t added into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, especially since Smash itself also came from the N64. We were *so close* to having a perfect trilogy of reveal trailers, it’s maddening. *Never again…* I’ll just stick to Smash 64 Remix and Project M EX Remix in that regard thanks. Getting back on topic for the original Dinosaur Planet though, I’m not surprised that it could’ve been much better without Miyamoto’s involvement. He’s also the one responsible for ruining the Paper Mario franchise. I’m honestly kinda surprised that Mario & Luigi lasted as long as it did, although it certainly doesn’t help that Nintendo didn’t care about AlphaDream going down too. Absolutely dreadful. Nintendo is basically like EA in every sense of the word of neglecting development companies and getting away with shady business practices, only difference being that they get away with it more because it’s “Nintendo”, and their company is so perfect *right???* Yeah I think it goes with saying that I hate Nintendo (As a company) much more with ever fiber of my being, because at least when EA does something stupid they get consequences out of it. Nintendo on the other hand will never improve because of the diehard fanbase devoted to them as if it’s a religion or an indie company. I’ll never get over how much I despise them, and you cannot convince me otherwise. Wether it’s throwing developers in the trash, to nuking fan mods and fan games, to trying to destroy archives of emulation, to making more subscription fees and RU-vid copyright restrictions, I think it’s a reasonable opinion to have that they are, without a doubt, the worst video game company ever in my mind.

Nah, Ubisoft's worse. At least Nintendo higher-ups don't literally rape their employees. Nintendo died with Iwata, in my opinion, but Nintendo's shenanigans are more standard-level corporation crap than the sorts of stuff EA and Konami pull (or the absolute bullcrap Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard pull... some of which have resulted in LITERAL EMPLOYEE DEATHS). I still fully agree regarding Nintendo's treatment of Rare, though. That was one of the DUMBEST things Nintendo ever did, and the worst part about it is that it was largely fueled by petty jealousy. Rare was the only company to out-Nintendo Nintendo when it came to making masterpieces, and Nintendo's higher-ups didn't like it one bit.

Personally, I believe that they did what they did to salvage what they made, which means removing everything that doesn't work gameplay-wise, like Kyte's AI and the double-story. Of course, it also means that everything not programmed gets scrapped, but still... If anything, Star Fox Adventures gave us the longest-running streak of the series without a reboot, all thanks to everyone's favorite furry bait, Krystal.

This game had so much potential to become a classic that it would close the Nintendo 64 lifecycle with a flourish. But instead he became a weird Star Fox that nobody likes. I so wanted RARE to have followed through with the original idea, in some points I prefer Dinosaur Planet to Star Fox Adventure, especially the plot and having Krystal playable for most of the game.

i agree. I feel like if Rare had finished their original vision for the game on the n64 it would have been excellent They knew how to maximize the hardware. They were clearly looking to push the limits of what they could do on the system and get really creative. Adventures is a good game but it looks like they lost a lot of the original vision and charm of dinosaur planet due to the move to the gamecube/ the transition to star fox. And Rare being bought by microsoft

In every way, shape, and form (aside from graphics, arguably) Dinosaur Planet would have been absolutely better without Starfox being shoved in it. I'll admit, Starfox Adventures has AMAZING graphics, especially for the time and even today. However, the N64 graphics were absolutely jaw-dropping and charming in a way that we don't get to see these days. Things made more sense in the original story, a TON of amazing music, characters, and areas were entirely tossed out. We missed out on SO MUCH during the conversion to starfox and gamecube. Heck, even the combat in DP is way more fun than what we got in SFA.

I admit I'm definitely in the camp of wishing Dinosaur Planet had never become a StarFox game. I don't necessarily think that would've automatically made it a better game or anything, but I would've welcomed the new IP. That said, if Nintendo ever wanted to revisit this concept and just make a sequel in the form of a straight up Krystal game I'd be super down for that as well.

I've never seen a franchise get railed by Nintendo so hard before. No matter the game's quality, I pretty firmly believe that Adventures is why we don't see StarFox games anymore; hardly anyone was interested in Assault because nobody wanted anything to do with a sequel to Adventures, and all Nintendo has done for the most part since then is remakes of 64, which itself is a remake of the SNES original. Not only was Dinosaur Planet murdered, but StarFox was kneecapped as a franchise, maybe irreparably.

Hear me out: How did turning it into a Star Fox game necessitate all the changes to the story? What about Dinosaur Planet's story contradicted anything from Star Fox 64? Nothing. All that stuff about the Kamerians and the Krazoa creating the universe or whatever could have just been new Star Fox lore. Sabre could have easily been swapped out for Fox without sacrificing his significance to the story or relationship to the other characters. He could know Krystal from his academy days or something. Sequels introduce new characters that already have established relationships to the old ones all the time. Maybe Randorn could have been replaced by General Pepper like they were planning, and he was the one to raise Krystal after her family died to the Cornerian Army. It's similar to the original plan and it would make Pepper a bit of a more morally-gray character. Alternatively, you could keep Randorn but have him have some relationship with the other characters. Maybe he's an old friend of James's and helped Peppy raise Fox after James died. Maybe he's Fox's actual uncle. Maybe he's Pepper's brother or something. There are so many ways it could have been done, and the biggest change any of them would require is a simple species-swap. Krystal definitely didn't have to be sidelined for the entire game, especially if they went with my idea of having her already know Fox. Andross sure as hell didn't need to be in the game. You freakin' killed him in 64. He's dead. They don't need to keep contriving reasons to bring him back from the dead every game. It's ok for Nintendo franchises to have new villains. They really didn't need to change any of the story's fundamentals in order to make it a Star Fox game.

Maybe reviving Andross could've been Drakor's plan, think about it: What are the majority of Andross' loyalists? Monkeys & REPTILES. Maybe the SharpClaw tribe could've been a leftover group of Andross' empire like Andrew Oinkonny's faction in Assault. And the only way to revive their emperor is with the power of the Krazoa spirits, & the Spell Stones would've been a distraction that could've been a bonus victory if it was successful, & maybe Andross was responsible for the destruction of Krystal's family & planet during the Lylat Wars. What do you think?

@@kidferocious They technically never considered themselves evil. What they ultimately wanted was peace and stability in the universe and they saw from all time they were extinct, that there was never any peace and always destruction and chaos throughout the universe on every planet. So, what they wanted to do with the Majestic 8 alignment was essentially restart the universe again, so a new one could be shaped by them to be "peaceful". It would make sense for their species given their role in the creation of the universe and that they had already fought a war with the Kamerians before. Though at the same time they were also hypocritical as implied by Drakor, so even before they wanted to do the alignment, they were always shady. Safe to say, this was always planned for the Krazoa.

@@Turbulation1 Uh, no, having the Krazoa view themselves as evil (as well as being evil all along) is just stupid.
@Turbulation1
@Turbulation1 Год назад
@@kidferocious That’s not what I said though? It’s not even bad storywise, it works fine, I don’t exactly get your mindset. Making the Krazoa the over arching villains also generally adds an extra layer of depth to the game’s story, so you’re not solely taking down Drakor with him having basic motivation to destroying dinosaur planet. Instead Drakor has actually solid motivation as a villain to destroy dinosaur planet as a means to try and stop the Krazoa from completing the alignment, and also because they massacred his clan, so generally it gives the game a bigger and better payoff than if Drakor remained the leading villain and you defeat him to save the planet. And you can’t say it’s a last minute twist too because Drakor specifically warns you about the Krazoa to not be what you think. Also one of Dinosaur Planet’s main themes is essentially growing up and trying to to form your own stance on what really is the truth, or who is really lying?

I honestly can’t tell if this game would’ve been better if it stayed Dinosaur planet. But I can at least say that it at least would’ve had the potential to get a sequel that fixed the problems in the previous entry. Plus Krystal would’ve had a bigger role, instead of being left in the dust after the release of Command. Honestly, I’m just really disappointed by how Nintendo treated this game. All the lore, all the characters, just completely left in the past after rebooting Star Fox. Despite Miyamoto requesting the game to be a Star Fox spinoff, it just feels like it was a pointless decision in retrospect. Rare had to rush it out, the fanbase didn’t like it, and now we’ll probably never see a better version of this game, or a sequel that addresses these issues since it’s stuck with a franchise that already had issues getting out of the hole Nintendo dug for it.

I'm going to answer with "yes." Yes, it did ruin Dinosaur Planet. Instead of a potentially interesting new IP with its own gameplay and story that was built for it, it was turned into Star Fox game that was nothing like a Star Fox game. Yes, not much of the gameplay itself changed when Star Fox was added in, but that's kind of the problem. It wasn't the kind of gameplay Star Fox is known for, and the Arwing stages felt like an afterthought. Plus, when we say that "Star Fox ruined Dinosaur Planet", we aren't just focusing on the gameplay, we're talking about the big picture: the plot, the characters, the world, we mean the game as a whole. Shoehorning Star Fox into an IP that was incredibly different from it made no sense at all.

Man I seriously wish this game stayed as Dinosaur Planet. I played Star Fox Adventures and enjoyed it honestly. I’m not a huge Zelda fan, I’ve only really played BOTW and a few of the 2D games and I loved all those, but I have tried the other 3D games and they didn’t stick with me. Star Fox Adventures was a bit frustrating in places, but it managed to hook me somehow and I think it was because of that underlying N64 era Rare quality. And Dinosaur Planet’s art direction and character designs and more consistency across everything makes me think that I would have outright fallen in love with this game, especially since they wouldn’t have had to spend time changing things and then rush the product out the door. A lot of the more frustrating elements of Star Fox Adventures would have had a chance to be a lot more polished. Also, the story, the world and the characters would have been FANTASTIC. Even if the actual gameplay wouldn’t have been any better, the more intricate story alone would have vastly improved the game. Star Fox Adventure’s story is boring I’m sorry.

I have an N64 original hardware compatible cartridge with Dinosaur Planet on it with the glitches seemingly fixed and I'm able to play quite a bit of the game. I don't know who made it and fixed the glitches but I bought it on ETSY and It's on a yellow cart. Pretty insane and confuses the hell out of me because I was going to just do one play through and get rid of it because I was watching playthroughs and it was obvious that you usually have to use glitches to get past unfinished areas (not the type of game to keep in my collection). When I was playing my cartridge side by side though, I realized I didn't have to use the glitches. The game works. I am in awe and can't take my smile off my face with confusion and so much wonder going on here.

This may sound sad, but due to the buyout, if the game was never converted to Star Fox, I believe that DP would either never had been released, been butchered by microsoft, or in the best case be released years later without the Rare charm. The only way we could have possibly gotten DP in it's raw form is if Nintendo was willing to let Star Fox pretty much go the way of f-zero and if the Microsoft buyout never happened. What if Nintendo bought Rare? Well then, DP probably would had been still made into SFA but with more time in development.

While it’s unfortunate that Dinosaur Planet got scrapped, I have to admit that Krystal’s design in the Star Fox games is better. I mean, the Krystal in Dinosaur Planet just looks like a disturbing taxidermy statue. I know that the Krystal from Star Fox got robbed from her role as a protagonist, but she’s still a nice addition to the series. I even want to see her in a new Star Fox game someday. Also, I kinda don’t think that Dinosaur Planet would’ve been as big as many think. To me, it would’ve been overshadowed by the Zelda games. I feel like the Star Fox Krystal just needs a new backstory to distance her away from Dinosaur Planet (by the way, generic name). Animus just feels like an alien version of Mordor, or some other fantasy world. Cerinia needs to be different from that. Who’s to say that it can’t be like the other planets in Star Fox? No offense to anyone who likes Dinosaur Planet, though.

I think you’re onto something about Microsoft’s buyout of Rare being related to Dinosaur Planet being changed to Star Fox in some way, or at least the Star Fox Adventures we got. I don’t know a lot about the buyout or copyright it’s not impossible. I also feel like a significant portion of dinosaur planet’s story could have survived into the transition to Star Fox Adventures by making it Fox’s backstory/his dad’s backstory before Arwing piloting or something. There’s some planet hopping already in Dinosaur Planet, so there’s nothing really preventing it from being in the Star Fox verse. It’d take of hand waving for some aspects of the story but tbh I think they could have just reskinned Sabre as one of the McClouds and called it Star Fox: Dinosaur Planet. As for whether a completed Dinosaur Planet would have been better than SFA, I’m not sure. I don’t think we can really say based off an incomplete build. As a story, maybe. As a game, I don’t know. Can say I’m not too impressed with how Scales dies in Dinosaur Planet.
