Just a clarification here. The 50gb maritime plan is 50gb at priority service Priority is the highest speed (residential). All roam plans have the lesser speed ( best available). So the maritime plans give better speed for the first 50gb then the normal roam speed you can verify this in your account plan settings

I enjoy watching your channel and listening to your comments. I bought a 1983 Pearson 303 for $10,000 and completely refitted it in the last year for a total investment of about $50,000. After watching several RU-vid sailing videos, I began to believe that I should have bought a bigger boat. But unlike many of the boats you have reviewed, all I want is a coastal cruiser. Also I am 69 years old and sail with a young man who I am teaching how to sail while he does the heavy work. We were just off the St. Augustine inlet the other day and wind picked up from 12 to 19 knots. The Pearson heeled over Oh so gently with a full main it was almost like she was saying, "Thank you.!" I call her "The Great Escape" because she takes me away from the world and its troubles. With everything except the hull and engine updated to 2022, I believe she can take me up and down the East coast in safety and loving kindness.

The primary reasons for buying a bigger boat are either because you cruise with a big family OR because you plan long passages and need the extra tankage. If neither of these apply to you, going smaller is definitely the smarter option in terms of maintenance time & expense. My wife and i are full time cruisers, planning on crossing the Atlantic next year, and we are doing it in a 34 ft boat. For coastal cruising 30ft is plenty big enough, and you will get more use and enjoyment out of it than if you had purchased a 40 ft boat.

We found that once we got to 8 knots it stopped working. Other wise it’s been great. Everyone is panicking about the geofencing but starlink won’t risk all the user that have installed it on their boats. We surveyed a few mariners and I would say starlink roam is now on a quarter of all boats

@@SVFresh2Salty Amazon or OneWeb aren't going to be any cheaper. If you really use 50GB per day then SpaceX won't shed one tear when you go back to cellular. Of course if you really do use 50GB per day then you are paying a hell of a lot more than $250/mo for cellular. My guess is within six months SpaceX locks down Roam further and despite your claims to drop them you won't you will switch to Maritime because at $250/mo it is still better than anything else. Note the 50GB limit is only offshore. Within range of a ground station it is the same unlimited deprioritized traffic you currently have with Roam.

@@namechamps I wouldn’t pay and I would drop it. I’m a full time cruiser. Simply don’t have the budget for the maritime version. I cruised without it before and more than happy to cruise without it again. I have heard from day one how spacex is going to do this and do that but it hasn’t happened yet and I really don’t believe it will. I also know many of my fellow cruisers who have it would also stop having it again because they simply don’t have the budget for it and would drop it. The thing is the Maritime version has gone down in price by half for the data monthly charge and by nearly 75% for the hardware. The biggest winner in this will be the big yachts, I mean super-yachts as this is new pricing is peanuts to them. However it will also attract sailors with world wide cruising itineraries as the hardware is jus about double the price of a small TV antenna and the monthly charge what one would pay for very low internet at sea with social media and emails and phone calls. If you are staying in your region as you said (ie North America) I don’t think they would be bothered about it with the RV. I have known of a lad who left Europe and made it all the way to Pacific Costa Rica and had internet all the way through the journey and that was with the residential one.

Sailed south from Topping VA to Dry Tortuga over the last 6 months. It's worked perfectly with no interruptions any place I have gone. Up time is still above 99%. Let's hope starlink doesn't nerf the reason I defended them with the FCC or I won't go to bat for them again. Was offer the Starlink new Maritime / Mobility plan for $250/mo that provides 50GB of Priority data. I will likely upgrade if I have any trouble with connectivity but will feel like a bait and switch at this stage.

Roam CAN be used on the move you just need the same dis as maritime. To be clear the "Maritime dish" isn't Marine only. It is the "High Performance Flat" antenna ($2,500). Both Roam and Maritime have never supported vehicles in motion with the standard dishy. The Standard dishy is certified by the FCC as only FSS (Fixed Satellite Service). It means the provider must take "reasonable" steps to ensure it doesn't work in motion. It seems SpaceX currently caps this at around 10 knots although that could change. The High Performance dish (usable on the move with both Roam and Marine plans) is the first ESIM certified dish. That is Earth Station in Motion. It means Space has proved to FCC satisfaction it won't cause interference even on the move. So short version is Standard Dishy was never not even from day 0 offiically support for use in motion. Likewise RV/Roam has always officially from day one only supported service on land. Now as you know that neither of those are strongly enforced but it could be enforced in the future. It is my understanding that the marine version can be used offshore. Therefore it requires satellite to satellite communication as there are obviously no POPs (ground stations) in the ocean. Only newer Starlink 1.5 satellites provide this laser data connection. Resources for sat to sat over ocean are limited and thus more expensive. Starlink roaming plan will likely continue to work close to shore and under about 8 knots. For our boat it is a game changer, especially at current prices (300 EUR for dish and 100 EUR per month).

Looks to me like the new dishy doesn't move. The T-mobile thing is accomplished by what in IT is called a Gateway. It's a way of connecting 2 or more networks when each of them have their own proprietary hardware and software. They are a nightmare to work the bugs out which they will be doing once the Gateway is working on the ground. They will be sending out installation crews to install the new equipment in every major city across the world to do that. Which is why I think we aren't there yet. When it goes online you will never know if your call was routed through T-mobile or Starlink, but if your at the bottom of the Grand Canyon you can be pretty sure it went through Starlink.

One would think Iridium would be responding by making plans better at least a lower cost standby/emergency style plan but in fact they raised rates recently. Reminds me of blockbuster video. Iridium is already not profitable. They got a few dozen satellites, they cannot increase bandwidth or decrease latency. Starlink is soon approaching 3000 satellites in a much lower orbit, which is great for latency. They just can't compete with that. A single Iridium sat costs as much as 50 Starlink (each being more capable) including launch, since SpaceX is their own launch provider they can have them at cost only, and they use their fleet leaders, the oldest boosters for Starlink that have long paid for themselves. That takes 2-3 launches, so they use veteran boosters with 7-12 launches under their belt. There just isn't any way anyone can compete with that. Even Amazon have bought SpaceX launches as well as ULA and Ariane because they can't get their own rocket to fly, to they pay a lot more. That was the biggest rocket deal in history, Amazon bought 85 launches. Yet still not a single Kuiper satellites in orbit, and if you want a Starlink competitor it will be Kuiper. Only they have the cash to pull it off. OneWebb is aimed at commercial users, oil platforms, government stuff etc... I don't think the T-Mobile thing will offer huge amounts of bandwidth, that really is meant to compete with sat phones and Iridium Go type deals. The satellites need an extra antenna so none of the 2000-3000 sats on orbit have the hardware to talk to a phone or similar from 300 km up. Well a few can but that's all early test phase. I would be surprised if it happens in the next two years. They need Starlink V2 full size. They launched some Starlink V2 mini on Falcon 9 but the proper ones needed for T-Mobile collab are too big to fit on Falcon 9. They need to launch on Starship. And Starship will take another 6-24 months to start launching satellites. I believe Ship 26 has satellite dispensers but just a small one for testing and it'll probably explode so we shall see, what the future of maritime high speed internet will be. TL:DR Iridium is bleeding money and obsolete hence the ever increasing cost. T-Mobile Starlink functionality is tied to the success of the Starship launch vehicle program. I think we probably all heard how it still needs a little work.

The great part of this video is the analysis of the terms. The key word in the « Starlink Roaming Terms » is « [that it] allows you to access Services at any land-based destination within the continent that you place your Order ». The intended use is inland. Combined with the maritime service, this may very well mean that Starlink will narrow the usage based on position. I am not an engineer and I do not know if gps-based restrictions can be enforced, but the new plan suggest a business model that can somehow do it. Otherwise, why would one buy the more expansive plan? The other aspect of the roaming terms that may hinder the plan usage is the « two month out » clause. You may have to declare another address of residency if you use the plan more than two months outside the country where you reside. Not sure it fits the canadian snowbird patterns...

On the one hand, you don't need Netflix to sail, especially if you want to unplug... but it seems wise to have redundant communication technologies, in case of emergencies. For example, a backup radio, and a cell phone (keep it turned off, if you like). It also seems like internet service is pretty useful for detailed weather information. I just don't see any downside to having more options in an emergency.

Good thoughtful video. I think you've probably got it figured out. Some usage, and good useful usage for $150/month, but some limitations. Starlink on boats is getting the system millions of dollars in advertising. As with my cell phone plan, I get the feeling when I'm traveling, as I am now - in Taiwan waiting for the weather window to continue sailing towards Japan, that my cell phone International Plan starts throttling me during the month. This consists of 5 minutes of good usage every day and then the throttling begins. Maybe this is to allow for emergencies. If so, I guess that's fair. I love my Starlink, which btw doesn't work in Taiwan. Worked in Vietnam, across the South China Sea to, and in, the Philippines; and then on the passage to the south end of Taiwan. About the time my phone welcomed me to Taiwan, Starlink cut off. (Taiwan wants to launch its own satellite internet.) We're using a local card USD$30 in a miniWiFi. We expect Starlink to work again when we're off shore, or sailing up the Japanese Ryukyu Islands and then across the Pacific to Canada and Vancouver. I'm hoping that if I have to pay $250/month I won't have to also buy the new bigger Dishy, and that I can turn levels of usage on and off as I need it. (So far they explicitly say that if I upgrade from about $115 to $150 for 'Roaming,' I can't later go back down. Maybe I can offset the cost by getting rid of my fiberoptic internet at my house and just carry Dishy and the Server back and forth between my home and boat -- I bought a spare cable. Of course I live in Los Angeles where Starlink is still limited.)

Haha, the junk you put on your roof is a nice way of referring to a military grade phased array antenna :) BTW T-Mobile needs Starlink V2 sats. They don't fit on Falcon 9 or Heavy, they need Starship (the largest man made flying object that exploded last Wednesday). And also the V2's have proper intersatellite optical coms, which is crucial for bandwidth far from ground station, such as the ocean or deserts or polar regions or very rural areas etc... The Maritime service is aimed at high end users on multimillion dollar motoryachts like you say. And cruise ships too. It's likely the small boats will remain with the RV's under the new Roaming thing. Don't ask me how that'll work, its all very much in flux, though they are aware of the customer base and also that most boaters will not be buying the official maritime version due to cost. So we shall see. I believe it should keep working normally, but no promises from me, I'm familiar with the hardware, nothing else. Also keep in mind this is very new and SpaceX is expecting at least another 20 billion in expenditure for the full phase 1 constellation. So your paying first adopter premiums right now. Of the phase 1 constellation so far only 20% of satellites are on orbit. So the system is at 1/5 capacity only, technically not operational but in testing. They honestly don't care that much about low budget boaters right now, it costs them a lot to offer bandwidth of shore compared to on shore. At least within the range of ground stations, which is still 100+ km. So you can be that far off shore and still be talking to ground stations via just one satellite. Especially the older sats up at 500 km. They got a fair bit of reach.

Something has to pay for the sats. Try think of it as being a patreon for Starlink. Sure, it's a nice chunk of cash, but you gotta remember something. Just speculation here, but seems to me this “term and condition” is more of a CYA for Starlink than a restriction in use. As stated, this system should not be relied upon for critical information while underway. If it were and it failed, Starlink could easily be sued for that failure. This restriction probably provides a layer of liability protection . Seems doubtful that they would actively monitor and prevent such usage.

Sorry for the spam but I thought some may be interested. I did some digging regarding coverage area per satellite. Currently Starlink have a 25° arc of coverage, to be upraded to 40° eventually. At 550 km that works out to a radius of 950 km. So you can be almost 1000 km from a ground station without needing laser comms. So if you cross the Atlantic you should be able to have connection to ground station for most but the middle third of the journey, which is still covered, just not that extensively. Most are equatorial though. It's really the Polar regions that must have laser comms but besides a few maniacs like Erik Aanderaa it's not needed by many sailors.

The offshore thing seems simple to me. Once your far enough out to sea that you are hitting satellites that have no ground station to send your signal to, it will relay to other satellites that do. I am sure they have plenty of data now about where each satellite looses ground signals anyway. So however far out that is, if you are out there, they will know. If you are still in shore enough to still be hitting satellites with ground contact, where you are at does not affect them. So if you can see waves hitting a beach still, your probably ok. If not, they may notice.

My dream is to buy a boat this year and get mobile. The main thing standing in my way right now is the lack of live aboard slips. I plan to dock out of Charleston SC and the majority of options I see want you to buy the slip for say 75,000 to 250,000 dollars. With sea levels rising and the up front cost, this is killing my dream. Can you possibly do a show on live aboard slips and let us know some good and bad locations? Also any tips you might have that think outside the box. Love your content, thanks!

@wallacegrommet9343
@wallacegrommet9343 Год назад
It’s the same story in the Pacific Northwest. Waiting lists for liveaboard slips are ten boats deep, and hardly budging. State law in Washington limits the number of marina slips designated as liveaboard to 10% of total slips, so there’s that, too. My marina limits overnight stays to three per week. Some boaters on the waitlist will liveaboard, but find some other cheap accommodation nearby, or RV, and go on short trips to avoid exceding the three night limit
@wallacegrommet9343
@wallacegrommet9343 Год назад
Out here in Washington, a boater can join a cheap at-large yacht club, and then journey between marinas and use dedicated reciprocal slips for overnight mooring. Plus, we have marine state parks with docks, so buying an annual pass gets you unlimited anchor buoy and dock usage, not exceeding three consecutive nights

Not so long ago, a high seas radiotelephone call was $5 per minute. Cells phones, with roaming and long distance, could cost $4 a minute. SailMail could and does support data--but at speeds of 300-1200bps. Not bytes or megabytes, but BITS per second. So Starlink is expensive, yes. Or damn cheap compared to Inmarsat and all the other high seas connections.

$2500? Why does it mention THAT price on the thumbnail page? I would say that $250/month for all-oceans access IS VERY MODERATE, in fact I would say it's a FANTASTIC price compared to Iridium or any other "competitor". On the other hand I WISH I had an ocean-going sailboat already, and I would definitely buy Starlink. And NO, I'm not whining that I cannot run an international data center with Terabytes of throughput from a 26 foot sailboat, that would be stupid.

They had an RV plan and the Marine plan was rolled out at about the same time and seeing as it has built in location tracking people should have known this was coming. It's pretty easy to tell when someone's offshore using the service and the Marine setup/hardware is much different as it requires active satellite tracking to maintain connection properly. Don't fool yourself Star Link can track location down to a few feet if not inches so attempting to cheat the system will not be working for much longer. Almost every video I watched from sailing channels getting Star Link they knew that they weren't supposed to be using the RV program but instead the much more expensive Marine plan but did it anyway thinking they could get away with it. So people knew they were basically scamming the system and thought that was okay, entitled much? They did or are doing this even though it's satellite based which means extremely accurate location tracking. The company has two plans and even though you may not agree with it they've made the decision to charge more for what's basically the same service although it does require a different setup that the hardware for is actually more expensive as it does more. Sorry but that's just how it is for now but hopefully things will change in the near future and if not those who want Star Link for their boats will have to pay the extra cash because there's no way you're going to fool the system for long. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

To be clear the $250 Maritime plan does not have a hard cap of 50 GB. It is 50GB of offshore priority connectivity. When you exhaust that you can either pay $2/GB offshore or get the same unlimited best effort Roam service. The $135 is gone for new signups so it is $150 or $200 for new Roam plans. In that light for official guaranteed support and true global access to include in the middle of oceans $50 more isn't that crazy. I do hope someday SpaceX comes out with a cheaper plan like $150 for 10 Gig priority. 10GB would be great I use Iridium offshore right now (sub dialup speeds).

Wow they changed their prices again. A month ago the maritime version started at $1000/month capped at 1 Terabyte of data and the best plan was $5000/month capped at 5T bytes. $250 isn't a bad deal and affordable in my opinion. I mean when you look at the average cost of most of these boats people are cruising on they can afford $250/month.
@daveamies5031
@daveamies5031 Год назад
If you look at the average cost of most of those houses people are living in (several times the cost of most boats), they can afford $2500/month! Sorry your logic doesn't work. You can buy a boat that you can live on for under $10K, sure it's not a luxurious boat but it's shelter and you can make it comfortable, can you do the same with a house? In my city you can't even buy a small apartment for under $500K, so even if you spring for a $50K boat it's still a lot cheaper than an apartment, if a person can't afford $500K mortgage for an apartment how is it that you think they can easily afford $250/month for internet?
@johnmagnan759
@johnmagnan759 Год назад
@@daveamies5031 Well all I can say to that is if you can't afford it you are not getting it. You may be initially paying $50K for the boat but the upkeep to keep her floating, you'd be better off buying a camper. Think Walmart still lets you spend the night in the parking lot for free. Many years ago a friend of mine's dad lived in his camper and paid $150/month for a permanent camp site. There is always stealth van camping too. Bottom line is ya got to do what ya got to do and most things aren't free.

With the up-use of social media, all that really does is allow companies to find those "loopholes" easier and faster. 10mph? That will be brought down just as soon as they figure out people are still getting away with service, it's all just a matter of time.

You just shouldn't advertise the cell phone usage in a case of emergency on a boat as an improvement. Why? It's simple: In an emergency, you really do NOT want to use a cell-phone like emergency handling because it is always a 1:1 communication! But if you're in serious trouble, what you would definitely want is that any soul within your VHF operation range is alarmed and may send help towards you ASAP!

a few things, dishy 1 and 2 are not ment for mobile, in transit use, the amount of satallite time used handshaking the connection drags everyone else down, the phased array in the dishy 1-2 only can steer about 1 degree max. and not over that should of a time, dishy HP (can steer about 3 degrees with 1/2 signal loss) and the 2 sync'd arrays for maratime use are where they can switch satallites much faster. From starlink (space-x) point of view, the overhead from operating a cheap dishy vs HP and sync PH arrays is how they know who you are. and the overhead on the micro sats are just too much. they charge more because poeple worked around the problem and really dragged on the sats in view when your boat is makie reconnections every few mins, vs moving the dish. it only has 2 motors for range of motion. space-x is just trying to sort users.
