It was long assumed that Amazons, the fierce and fearsome women warriors of Greece, were imaginary. But curiously enough, stories from ancient Egypt, Persia, the Middle East, Central Asia, India and China also featured Amazon-like warrior women. And Amazons were described in ancient historical accounts, not just myths. Who were the real women warriors known as Amazons? Adrienne Mayor investigates.
Lesson by Adrienne Mayor, animation by Silvia Prietov.

Just to go on record, in certain part of pre modern Northern/Central Asia, it is the women that are bread winners and men take care of domestic chore, opposite from the rest of the world. This is due to, in most ancient times, during hunter gather society, they found women make better horse riding archers, compare to men (even today, despite all the stereotype about women been bad drivers, women are in fact better drivers and pilots, if soldiers doesn't require been physically tough to a certain extend, there will be more female fighter pilots and helicopter pilots compare to men.) As a result, in those area, in ancient days, during peace time, the women are the bread winner and men take care of domestic chore, during wartime, both men and women serve in the military, men due to having physical strength allowing them to be archers shooting with a max range beyond women, women due to they are already been trained as horseback riding archers, while men need to be trained as archers first. The complex gender role mean, after enter agriculture society men and women enjoy great deal of equality, unlike the rest of the world, where in both agriculture and hunter gather society, the men is the prime bread winner and things only start to change due to the industrial revolution.

Not *all* Greek women were repressed. Spartan women enjoyed a surprisingly close level of equality with Spartan men. Such as... + Superior education + Combat training (Spartan women were expected to be Sparta's last line of defence should the men fail to hold off invaders) + Able to divorce and remarry while retaining custody of their children + Higher levels of job opportunities, including work related to agriculture, logistics and governance. More menial jobs like weaving were considered unfit work for Spartan women and were given to slaves (Helots) to do. + Women who died in childbirth were afforded the same honour as men who died in battle + Actively participated in sports and even participated in the Ancient Greek Olympics (which was exclusively male in other Greek states) + Married as women, not as girls. And they married men of about their own age, not men who were much older than themselves. + Were fed a healthy diet + Able to legally own and inherit property + Some may have practised polyandry Sparta was surprisingly progressive with women's rights for an ancient society.

Hello! A person from South America here, my country, Peru, is part of el amazonas. I'm pretty sure it's because there were legends of female warriors that belonged to lost tribes hidden in the huge forest. I do remember reading about a west African tribe that employed an army of entirely women. They were notoriously brutal and warlike, and conquered every tribe near them. They were known for not showing mercy to any enemy men, women, or children, nor their own soldiers if they fell out of line. The only problem is that they were *too* warlike, to the point where they pissed off some advanced European nation by killing their citizens, so they were crushed with gunpowder firearms. Edit: It was the Dahomey Amazons and they pissed off the French

MegaPrem The Dahomey Amazons were the inspiration for Wakanda's female guards. There are numerous writings from Europeans who witnessed the Dahomey Amazons in action and they all expressed how disciplined, well-trained, and courageous the women were. The general consensus is that the only reason Europeans were able to defeat them was because they had better fire power.

I love these series about women.... I don't know why. I am just a dude or guy who just happens to be so proud of the women in my life...my grandma....my aunts.....my mom....Mary, the mother of Jesus and her great and very important role and view in my Catholic Christian faith....and also my teachers who are mostly women.....It also became so painful to me to hear girls saying they can't because they are girls or to hear girls saying they're just girls. For me, I surely know they can, because first of all, they are girls. They are beings of courage and strength, fortitude, patience, hardwork, and resilience, but unlike most men like me, they have compassion, love, care, gentleness, kindness, and comforting souls and hearts burning inside each of them and igniting a lot collectively among them. I just love and am so proud of my mom, and my dad too, and all of the good and strong women and men in my life that I look for to. What men can do is great, what women can do is amazing, but what men and women can do altogether is beyond comprehension of amazingness and greatness. 😇😊💕

Makes sense that Scythia would be the inspiration for the mythical Amazons. According to some sources, it was the queen of a Scythian tribe or tribal alliance that defeated and killed the Achaemenid shahanshah Cyrus II the Great (who, BTW, was the first ever ruler to invent human rights).

Valkyries and Amazons were actually a lot alike. By extension, Greek and Norse mythology were alot alike. The theme of a sky deity (Zeus and Thor) goes back to the Proto-Indo-European days. Not only that, but they were both described to be fair-haired and beautiful, and archaeological expeditions of the people they were based off of seems to support that claim.

Margo Kafka yes indeed, i studied Latin and noticed that some historians told some battles as if they were in Lord of the rings lol. Sometimes they would even make very negative comments about the enemies of Rome which indicates that they were pretty biased. I think they didn’t really had a set of rules to respect or deontology for their work.

Not only that, but Herodotus’ tales were often third-rate accounts - taken from relatives who had family witness the events of focus. So hyperbole could also be seen interlaced in the historical texts.

Well...During the time of the Rig-Veda, records show that women were comparable to amazons and we have found several records showing women equal to men during the early ages of the Indo-Aryans when they started making kingdoms, they used to participate in anything from being able to participate in group discussions which mostly were of topics relevant to men to even sometimes having the authority of the prime minister, at those times when the Indo-Aryans needed them the most, they used to fight alongside men! If you have read the Rig Veda and understand the book properly, you can (and will) find records of women being at the same social status in India as men were to the Greek. Note: These records can't be found on the web as I have tried to find any records of this on the web so I asked my dad and he said that it can only be found in the records of the Vedas. Thank you 😊

that closing statement really only applied to certain greek city-states. gotta remember that while the ancient greeks shared a lot of cultural practices, they also had wildly differing views on a lot of things. it wasn't until the Macedonians and later Romans conquered the region that a shared "Greek" identity really became a concept. before then, most ancient greek people identified themselves according to their city-state of birth.
