This type of secondary cup tournament is working on big European football leagues because in the end the winner got to play at the Europa League, which is basically a continent tournament (although it's a second tier tournament in itself, but that's just some random facts i stated) In short, there are stakes to actually play those cup games While in a single league like NBA, it became useless because they play for nothing The end game for a franchise in this league is to go to the finals I mean money is another thing But if you don't put worthy rewards for a team, i don't see any reasons for this tournament to be played at all

Mark probably didn’t know that tournament games count towards record, but he would probably just say he’d treat tournament games like regular season games, which I agree with. Ultimately, the nba can’t control what people care about, and the Larry O’Brien trophy is what matters to people. All it’s gonna take is for one team to rest players in an “important” tournament game and everyone will go from caring very little to not caring at all.
This gives everyone more motivation to try to put up as many points as possible the games were a tually better and that 500 grand for each player even the guys on the bench.... is a nice bonus I liked it
Sounds cool, but i feel like it would be a lot more complicated than it sounds as scheduling would be a major issue. Not only that but if there are other team owners besides from Cuban that would not wish to participate, then that would be a massive issue

It would be better for the fans, the only problem being that it’s gonna be a change and people will not like it for the first few years unless they implant it bad, and the players will probably be extremely exhausted by the end of the season, I think it’s fine adding more competition other than just 1 which is the playoffs and then having to wait another year for it, look at football it’s the most successful sport and one reason is because their able to get the player to be fine and not extremely exhausted, and while they do that they have their league to play,then the ucl qualifiers, then their domestic cup, and then the ucl knock out stage, and then knock outs of their domestic cup (and yes they are all still playing their league to this point) and then the domestic cup final, then the ucl final and then in the end you get the team that wins their league, and after all that in the summer while club football is not happening the players play the euros or copa America and of course every 4 years the biggest sport competition the World Cup, it all comes down to how the nba can schedule their games, football player can play 60+ games which compare to a nba player it’s usually a below average but football players also need more time to recover plus for the ucl they need to travel by plane and then in the euros or copa America they travel as well, so if the nba can adjust it right then they can have 1 more competition and it will definitely raise viewership after all theirs a reason why football has being the best sport for decades

That’s an awful idea. If the team wins the tournament what’s the incentive for them to play hard at the end of the season if their record would put them below the 6 seed.

A league that is currently struggling to keep star players healthy but they want to add a mid season tourney? I’d rather have a playoffs with healthier teams who aren’t struggling to fill a position while playing for their season lol
Guaranteeing a playoff spot is stupid. The tournament is too early in the season and a lot can happen which could change the standings during that time. Having a trophy and prize money is better and I’m glad they’re not screwing up the playoffs with another corny idea. At least this will give some added value to the regular season. But I doubt it’s going to mean much to everyone, players and fans alike.
I think a locked in playoff spot is a great incentive, teams that are iffy on whether or not they’ll make the playoffs can play for it and the teams that are a lock for a playoff spot can opt out
Tbh, I’m not a huge fan. It seems too complicated. I think they should do something like a 1v1 tournament in the middle of the year. It would be like the All Star game, with voting and all that, but it would be so cool for NBA players to have a 1v1 tournament. Then there could be a prize like a trophy or money or something

Makes sense for a competition like the NFL since games are weekly but in the NBA games are every couple of days I'm European so I'm a huge football fan and have experience in how domestic cups work and it really only works in a system where it is a completely separate competition to the NBA The FA Cup and Premier League are 2 completely different competitions and have no relation other then the fact all Premier League teams automatically qualify for the FA Cup Directly tieing the Cup into the NBA by rewarding a Playoff spot completely devalues the Cup to just being an option whereas in football the Cup is something teams aim to win as it has it's own identity and prestige

actually they only have 80 games currently schedule the teams will only play 82 if they don't make the tournament and the winners and runner up will play the 83rd game
There was a great idea on I think TTW but they said the prize should be a large trade exception, draft pick(put one more pick at the end of the lottery), or more salary cap space for the next off season. How could you make a player like lebron or kd be interested in playing in the tournament? By making the prize something they could use to make their team better. Now this prize provides 0 incentive for bad teams to play, but presumably they wouldn’t win anyways so there’s no need to incentivize for them

They should do It like soccer league where u have the divisions are groups and each team in division got to play each other twice then whoever the top 2 in division get to play in the cup tournaments. During the group games the regular season is still going on and even the cup
If there’s something remotely at stake there than I am all for it. I like the idea that the winner of the mid season tournament is awarded a minimum 6th seed in the playoffs to avoid the play-in tournament.
For 50 years, the NBA has had an 82-game season. *No change has been made to those 82 games until now.* The NFL is convulated to a non-fan. It was 15 games but changed to 17 games. There is a BYE week. Best record makes playoffs... unless you're a division winner. There are wild card teams. Teams play division teams 2 times and all teams in a different interconference division each season so it takes 4 years to play all the teams. There's a 12-step tie breaking process. I could go on and on. 😅 I love football but it's impossible to explain to my non-US friends.

Theres literally no reason to have this. It's stupid. If you want to make the playoffs, you have to be good enough over the course of an 82 game season, not beat teams in a bunch of 1 off games, so giving somebody an automatic 6th seed is ridiculous. I even think the play in is ridiculous, but whatever.
Well if the Mavs don’t participate they will be forfeiting those games. So I’m pretty sure the players will want to play it even if they do so reluctantly
