I am under the impression that an infrared detector cannot detect normal light please clarify. And what happened to Brian Cox….

Yes you're right! Infrared detectors are designed specifically to sense infrared radiation coz of spectral sensitivity and material composition.if you need detection across a broader spectrum that includes both visible and infrared,devices like multi-spectral sensor photo detectors are used.
