Can the spectacle of modern politics today be traced back to a photograph of Abraham Lincoln taken during the presidential election in 1860? Host Vincent Brown reveals the specific choices made by Lincoln and renowned portrait photographer Mathew Brady in hopes of casting the candidate as presidential in his iconic 1860 portrait.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
Images can tell powerful stories. One iconic photograph can symbolize an entire era. But if we expand the frame and examine the moment in which it was taken, a very different story can emerge. In this series of documentary shorts, Harvard University historian Dr. Vincent Brown meets with curators, photographers and other experts to challenge common assumptions about iconic American images.
THE BIGGER PICTURE is a co-production of Timestamp Media LLC and The WNET Group, in association with Harvard University’s History Design Studio at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, and Vision Maker Media.
Major funding for THE BIGGER PICTURE was provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional funding was provided by the Anderson Family Charitable Fund, the Tamara L. Harris Foundation, the William Talbott Hillman Foundation, the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Additional funding for the digital production of THE BIGGER PICTURE was provided by Chasing the Dream - a public media initiative from The WNET Group, reporting on poverty, opportunity, and justice in America, and supported by The JPB Foundation, The Peter G. Peterson and Joan Ganz Cooney Fund and Sue and Edgar Wachenheim, III.

I loved this episode! So, many people don't realize the need for intentionality with pictures. I say this with developing brochures, pamphlets, magazines, presentations etc. Having just the right imagery shapes the narrative. It explains what you are about and what you want people to buy in to. A photo helps someone to see it from your prospective. "A picture is worth a thousand words" is so right. I enjoy telling a story through pictures!!

Also, I slightly disagree with one point made about the compare/contrast with Lincoln and Obama: both were lanky men with physical attributes that were perceived as "odd": Lincoln's face and Obama's ears. Both men were self-deprecating about their respective features, and both used photography to reshape their images--in different ways, absolutely, but to a similar end: both became US presidents.

Savvy teachers will show this to their students as they learn about political campaigns. What a powerfully succinct documentary! Also the tips of "don't look directly at the camera, shift your clothing in certain ways for a specific effect" are very familiar to me as someone who does cosplay and cosplay photography at nerd conventions. "I see you're trying to shorten my neck" got an audible chuckle out of me.

Watched the first episode just now. Very interesting how images of public figures are carefully constructed and selected for their effect and not accidental. They also, I guess, say something about how the figures want to come across. The one of Obama says a lot. Would not miss the later ones.

Thanks for watching. You make a great point about intent and how people want to be seen. You’ll see that perception vs reality is a key theme that is consistently addressed throughout the series. What one person sees in a photo can be very different than another.

This is a great idea for a RU-vid channel, and I really enjoyed the presentation. As someone from outside the US I'd be really keen to see this become a presentation of photos from around the world, and how they represent and interact with world history generally. But hey, even if you just stick to US ones, it's still a great entertaining education.

Very impressive video! I really enjoyed learning about how a photograph was able to literally change the course of history. I am currently taking a course in African American Studies, and I was introduced to you through the “Many Rivers to Cross” series. I’m looking forward to watching more of your work. I really want to learn so much more about African and African American history (truth), since we clearly weren’t taught about it in any real depth. 🙌🏽

At some point, I read about democracies with largely illiterate populations who used animal line drawings to represent candidates and political parties. Lincoln's portrait is a significant transition but at the same time from the same roots -- how do you represent someone and what they represent? Our elephant and donkey are now cartoon characters. I would love a show on this and other historic representatives here in the USA.
