Dude, you’re one of the few content creators to go this in-depth on boots (without cutting them apart). My man keep doing what you’re doing, you’re a valuable asset to my boot journey. Thank you🙏
After watching this video I went and looked at mine. I have a pair in black purchased last year and a pair in terracotta I just purchased last week. I can clearly see the difference in toe design and how the heel lining is different. For me the width feels better on the newer ones. And now that you pointed it out I can’t unsee the toe difference, I like the slimmer look.
One key thing to note is that the changes to the last (from the true to the rt3 to the new king maker) only affect the rugged and resilient line on the captains and presidents.
Yes yes very true, someone else made a video saying how the king make her last is available across the whole line of captains, which is incorrect. I emailed Thursday boots and asked them, they said it's only on the rugged and resilient for both boots Captain and president. We can also check on the specs of the boot, under "release notes" And if there have been changes it will tell you what it used to be and what it is currently, the Last etc
For those of us that like to geek out on specifics, I’m super grateful for this video. I literally had this exact question regarding the different lasts and how they were all different. Love the wider rt3 last and wasn’t sure if the kingmaker would be as comfortable. The exact measurements were key for me here. And also how the kingmaker brings a bit of the original look and feel back to the booth since the rt3 deviated from that heritage. I enjoyed learning that. Thank so much for making this!! 🙏👏
I’m glad to see you doing a video covering this. I love Thursday. I have quite a lot of them. They have the best style with that sleek design so I’m glad they didn’t ruin it.
The welt channel is one of my favorite things about the new boot. I always wanted that done in mine. I can’t believe Thursday is still able to offer these amazing boots for the same price lol that’s insane!
The “true” last was a toe crushing nightmare. I got a “nirvana” last r&r captain and loved it but the internet revolted over a “bulbous” toe that wasn’t even that bad. I really think people overreacted but it was enough for TB to end it. I just got my first Kingmaker r&r boot and it’s great and hopefully everyone can be happy. I’d love them to offer it outside the r&r line.
Thank ya sir!!! Really appreciate hearing your perspective. We are going to see how many people end up opting to get an RT3 last instead of the Kingmaker and may actually continue to offer both. Also spent a lot of time last year on fit consistency and are planning to bring the Kingmaker to more styles- we have a Chelsea version for the Duke and Legend + the Cadet!
Love your content. Thanks so much for doing the work. I had a question regarding the Major, I can’t seem to find a review on it anyway you could do one 😂 thanks again for your time.
The problem : if you are a 10 in the old Captain you will probably not be in the new one and the next size smaller is way tighter. Again the annoying sizing issue with online orders.
I've actually been wearing a pair of the new Rugged & Resilient Captains with the kingmaker last for a little over a month now, and I have to say they are my new favorite Thursdays. I have 6-7 pairs of Thursday boots, and other than the Casa Moto boots, they have been the most comfortable pair straight out of the box. Virtually no break-in period, no areas too tight, no hot spots from rubbing, excellent support. From day one, I've been able to lace them up and wear them all day without any discomfort. In fact, I almost forget they're on my feet.
I have flat feet and have the captain he is holding. I've worn them more and more and they are starting to feel comfy. I wish the insole was better and one of the heels seemed off. My timberlands moc toe I bought for 80 bucks is a great boot love it
Thanks for the overview and explanation! A while ago I ordered a new pair of captains not knowing they changed the last to RT3 and immediately returned them bc they looked horrible. I have an original pair and they definitely do hurt my pinky toe, so now I will buy another pair to see if it really is the best of both worlds!
I have a pair of Captain Stormkings that will be here tomorrow, excited to try it out. Didn't realize they had changed it when I bought mine, but I'll be able to compare it to the original last on my other boot. I do think it looks much better.
My captains should be arriving this week. This video was serendipitous. When did the new kingmaker last go into production? Do I need to send these back?
Thanks for the great review. I bought a pair on Amazon, but it was still the RT3, so I canceled it, in hopes of getting the new last from the company at the same cost.
After getting a newer pair, I at first wished my old pair were this shape. But after awhile I like having one that’s looser and more rugged looking to beat around and can keep the newer pair nice
Do you know if these changes are coming to the standard Captain? Looks you the one you refer to in this video is the rugged and resilient line. I love the bones and features (like a steel shank and the laces) of the Rugged line but love the leather on the regular line.
We all have different feet. Not one last will be good for everybody. The best way to find the right foot, is to try it on. At a shoe store, you can try on several different sizes at the same time, to find the best fitting shoe. Are you going to order 4 or 6 pairs of shoes in the mail, then keep 1 and send the rest of them back?
I'm excited to try this out, because my first pair of captains to be honest is not the most comfortable boot after a while, It's rather snug and I'm looking forward to trying the new kingmaker last 💯 this will be my third service boot 😅 I've already got one brown captain and one matte black pair of presidents. Too much?? 😬
Just got my first Thursday captains. They’re quite snug in the toe. This kingmaker might be more comfy with more wiggle room. But in terms of the silhouette I agree that the original looks better. New one kinda looks like the iron ranger from the wearer’s view
Compared to other boots in the same size, I find that I have to intentionally loosen the laces for a better fit. The sole's width is just less compared to my other boots so I found loosening the laces help a lot.
@@cheekibreeki9155 yea I found that to be true for mine too. They're starting to break in more and feels better now. Hoping in a few days time it'll fit like a glove!
@@aaronlee1129Boots this this will always take quit a few wears to get the right comfortable fit. It’s a shame to see people return these shoes after two wears because it isn’t “comfy”, it’s just breaking in the material to mold to your foot.
@@Alan-rw3ez I'm hoping you are right. I just got a pair of captains on the new last about 2 weeks ago. The fit on the right foot is just about perfect but on the left foot there's just enough room in the heel area that it can wiggle a bit. Definitely not enough room that I'd fit in a size down, but enough room that it caused a blister on my left foot the second time I wore them. My hope is that as I wear them the heel cup will conform to my foot better to make it less uncomfortable, but only time will tell.
i dont get the heel rough out so they just got it back the lining means they stick it to the heel counter beside whats its use not if your heel will be on the smooth surface of the lining
Actually, the rough out rubs blisters on my heels, and smooth leather makes my heels happy. I am returning the boots upon receipt and ordering my fourth pair of Beckett Simonon Dowler cap toe boots.
I was nervous when I saw this video. As I'm shopping for a pair of Thursdays again right now. I was worried they had cut some corners and called them improvements. Sounds like I'll like all the changes actually.
yo thank you for doing this. I'm honestly probably not going to be buying thursdays (they're just a bit too dressy for me I think). But I am eternally frustrated by boot size differentiation. I have 4E or 3E wide feet and I just can't catch a break buying online. So thank you for explaining this. I wish we had more videos like this with other brands and lines.
Yeah, buying boots for 3E or wider can be really tough. A lot of guys go to PNW boot makers like JK to get a made to order pair. Boot sizing is always the hardest thing for people. Will have to make more content on this
@@RandomUselessKnowledge I found them to be quite a bit more snug than other boots of the same marked size. They do appear to get more comfortable as they get warm.
Ashhhhh why didn't I watched this video before. I got mine today and i clearly see the difference, the toe is wider, when i tried tie them the sides dont go as close as the other ones....
I bought through Amazon and returned the adobe captain twice as it was defective. The front sole separated on both pairs in 2 days of desk job work?! For $200, it was too much for this issue as my old $20-80 pairs from other makers I chucked never had this happen. I bought through Amazon and Amazon did refund and now I am trying to find a similar color in a diff maker as I can’t think to spend that much and have this issues. Was this a bad batch though? Seems like others dealt with it. I wonder why it was the adobe and my black lug boot is doing what it should
I had no idea the last ever changed. I have very wide feet that are on the larger side. My complaint with my captains was with the wide width boot, the toe box went from wide to oddly pointy. I think the RT3 would actually suit my foot better.
If it would, how might this change affect resoles? I purchased my StormKing Captains July 2022 and they're due for a resole. I'll be taking them to a ThursdayBoots preferred cobbler.
I’ve purchased 2 pair of Captains and I’m a little concerned about the number of QC issues I’m seeing. They’re great about sending replacement boots but I’m growing a little weary of it all. Are their American made boots better? Am considering Grant Stone but would want to know they’re not using sweat shop tactics that some Chinese factories use. Thanks for your content.
I have a pair of captains and cadets, love them both. The Scout is next on my list. I recently got a pair of the cadets in Mocha, and realized that it is made with a narrower last. It was a bit too tight on the sides for my liking, and the half size up was just too big in general it seemed.. I am a size 12.5-13 normally in sneakers, but I have always gotten a 12 in dress shoes/boots. In part because it is rare that there are half sizes. Regardless, I always feel like the 12 is what I am supposed to get in Thursday boots based on how they say it should fit, although I definitely wear 13 in their sneakers. My question for you is in regard to fit. Thursday recommends the boots should be "snug" on the width at first. The 12.5 boots, I can feel the sides on my feet, but just barely. I wouldn't say it is squeezing my foot at all, just barely touching. The size 12 definitely has a gentle but firm snugness on the sides of my feet. I don't know how much I should expect leather to actually stretch. Should I stick with the 12 for the long run? My main concern is that I have the proper and intended boot fit. I am wondering why my sneaker and boot size could be an entire size difference. Thank you for any advise!
I just got a new pair this week. I wear 13.5 so the boots look very long. I have very narrow feet and my toes are still touching a bit but nothing uncomfortable
The kingmaker is the best of both worlds. The rt3 is hard to play with outfits because of the wide and round shape. This kingmaker last will help play dress up.
I bought these boots for their appearance and comfort. They were everyday wear boots, semi-dressy. I loved the True last version. Never had an issue. I purchased a new pair on 3/23 and hated the new toe look. Ruined the aesthetic for me. Spoke to customer service and they told me they had complaints about toe fit and that the RT3 last was more ‘manly’ than the Classic, which was an issue for some. I returned the RT3 boots unworn. I bought a new pair in October with the Kingmaker last, and I love them. It all comes down to what you are looking for. I own real work boots. I am using these as a substitute for every day shoes and semi-dressy. I do not want to ‘simulate’ a work boot look. No lugged sole, no bulbous toe cap to simulate a steel toe. No one is impressed by a fake work boot.
Hi, I live in the UK, I'm looking to buy the Legend Chelsea, I have Red wings and always drop half size. As for the Thursdays some people say drop half,..and some say normal size, even on the Thursdays website they are telling me to buy my normal size. It's so conflicting. I am a standard D width. Can you help . Brilliant content btw
Thank you for this video. It is SUPER helpful. I have 3 Captains, a President, a Duke and the U.S. made service boot (forgetting the name. I thinknall but maybe the U.S. made are the origin True last. I love the aesthetic, but itvis slightly snug on me. Not unbearable, but a little snug. I also always followed their half size down guideline, which may be contributing. In any case, I love the improvements with this new Kingmaker. I just wish theyveere making it available on more boots. I am not atvall a fan of the look of the RT3. It ribs thecathursday of its attractive silhouette, IMO. Not sure I will buy another boot in that last.
I just went for my first 15-minute walk outside in my new Captains, and the right one let water in, so when I got home, my toe was wet. It's not really great as this is my first pair of boots like this. I normally wear Dr. Martens that do not leak at all.. Is there anything I can apply to the leather to stop this from happening?
I just wore a new pair of Captain boots (Stormking, Black matte) for three days at a conference where I was constantly on my feet, on concrete floors with thin carpet. My feet hurt! Particularly my big and little toes, and the balls of my feet. Don't know if I would have got a different result from any other footwear. Let's face it; that kind of punishment on feet is hard to mitigate. But I also think people need to accept the reality that most people's feet don't come to a point at the toes. They just don't. Shoes need to reflect that, or they are going to be painful. I'll keep these boots, but they aren't going to come to conferences with me.
I have a pair of natural captains from about 3 years ago, and overall I think they are ok. However, the side profile has really started to look more and more like a duck’s bill, which is not very nice looking overall. The Vanguard still holds a nicer profile than the current captains I feel anyway. Not everyone can wear the same last, so it’s impossible to make a boot to fit everyone. I know that Thursday has tried to mimic boot designs from the 1920-1940s, and I appreciate that for sure. That said, the majority of the actual men’s service and dress boots from those decades, were better looking that the current Thursdays. I wish Thursday would really take a better look at those old designs and follow some of them more closely! Many were somewhat slim with a slight bump toe and a more pronounced sole arch similar to western style boots to a certain degree. They also were tapered better and did not have such a duck bill design. Oh well, can’t have it all lol.
I just went on the website and checked the captains.. didnt see any mention of the kingmaker last. Also im a bit confused on the website theres a standard and wide option on the width. Is the wide a kingmaker last, or some other one?
You failed to mention that the new last will be an available in the Rugged and resilient line but the Classic Captains will still utilize the True(original) last! So if you like the old last you can still get it in a he classic line. I just bought the Dark Olive Suede and they are the true last!
The new Kingmaker last only applies to the rugged and resilient Captain boots. The "Classic Collection" Captain boots like your first Brown leather Captain use different lasts and there have been a large number of different lasts for the Classic boots. And to make it even more confusing Stormking lug sole boots have a different history of lasts For example Brown Captain went New Foundation last -> Encore last in previous 18 months. There were earlier last changes for these but I don't have the details anymore. Whiskey Captain went Encore last -> RT3 to -> Kingmaker in previous 18 months Safari Captain went True last -> RT3 to -> Kingmaker in the previous 18 months. So you may find the changes for current boots different from that mentioned if you already have a pair of Thursday boots from an earlier era.
@@Jechtmike I only own one older R&R Captain boot which uses the Encore last. The Encore last is now used for the classic boot and is a little wider than the older New Foundation last that make up most of my Captain boots. I haven't owned a pair with the Kingmaker last which is the current R&R last, sorry,
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd Interesting, didn't know that detail. Can you tell me how does the comfort of the DuraEVA midsole of the Classic compare to the leather midsole of the R&R? I've heard the DuraEVA on the Classic makes it feel more like the comfort of a sneaker. Yet I've also heard that once the leather midsole of the R&R is broken in, the difference is barely noticeable. I'm torn between getting Classic or R&R, since I want it as an everyday boot and want to get the most comfy Captain style.
@@Jechtmike I think you'll find that all the Captain, President and Vanguard boots have a leather midsole. I don't think the R&R ones are constructed differently. The stormking outsole adds a little cushioning. I think the construction consists of an EVA insert in the footbed, a poron midlayer plus the leather midsole (and the cork layer in the welt gap). I own several President boots, several Vanguard boots and the Captain boots mentioned above and they all have similar cushioning for everyday use. Even though I own much higher end boots by Cheaney, Trickers, Crockett and Jones and US companies like Grant Stones, I still use my Thursday boots the most simply because I find them very comfortable and I like the balance of the lasts they use which are a nice compromise between casual and smart. I don't need to worry about them given their relatively low price yet they are smart enough and versatile enough for my relatively casual lifestyle.
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd Well apparently the Classic line of Captains are the only ones with the DuraEVA Comfort Strip, as stated in the product description in the website and different reviews on the Captain line. That's why I'm wondering if those are noticeably more comfortable.
I wish I saw something like this video before buying Captains. They are the first boots I ever bought online, on the basis of glowing reviews. I dislike the Captains. The pictures and reviews that I saw (and I saw many) did not capture the very pointy toe and the very high heel. I like a more traditional service boot look. I have been reluctant to buy online again.
My problem with Thursdays is that they look as cheap as they are, and the relentless marketing. Carmina, Grant Stone, Carlos Santos, TLB Mallorca. Yes they are twice the cost but I can’t unsee the cheapness of Thursdays.
@@austinstephens8123 maybe maybe. I'm genuinely curious though. As with any hobby it's easy to get into to the weeds, probably natural but other than the pure personal interest....what's the deal
Another very good video here Bill…! It’s the Old Timer here… By the way, I figured I better do it before I run out of gas, so I bought a new pair of Alden Indy’s in the Earth reverse chamois…. Definitely like the fit… I’ll let you know how they do this fall… Greg
I will let you know Bill… I actually lucked out, as I bought them brand new off EBay for a lot less and in my size 10d so I pulled the trigger… The Horween Earth reverse is really oily, rugged but very supple… I’ll keep you posted…. Love your videos, you do a great job…! Greg
