One of the most iconic elements of the Wallace & Gromit franchise would have to be Wallace’s love of cheese, but there’s one brand in particular that’s became synonymous with the characters ever since their inception in 1989...

For YEARS I tried to find this cheese, driving my wife crazy in the process. Whenever I saw a cheese shop she knew I had to check if they had it. Finally we found a store selling authentic Wensleydale in the W&G packaging and yes, it’s really good. Unfortunately, they stopped importing it. We just found a store that sells Yorkshire Wensleydale, but only the apricot version, which is still pretty good.

I had the pleasure of visiting the creamery during the 2000's whilst on a hiking holiday. For the life of me, I cannot remember the exact year but I do remember one part of the gift shop being entirely devoted to Wallace and Gromit. Being a fan of the series I wanted to buy the entire shop, but instead walked away with two medium sized cheeses for the family back home.

Fun Fact: Director Nick Park had Wallace say "Wensleydale" because it made his face look nice and toothy. He didn’t realize was that the cheese factory where Wensleydale cheese is made was on its last legs and was about to declare bankruptcy. Thanks to the film's success brought the factory is now more profitable and stronger than ever. Anyone else want some Wensleydale cheese? I know I do.

Another interesting installment, I've watched the whole playlist. Interesting to hear about the timeline of when the company was rescued, didn't know that before. It does fit for me, since the first mention of Wensleydale in the films is when Wallace takes his first bite of the moon cheese, as his first guess of its identity, although according to Gromit's nose, it isn't Wensleydale. That of course puts it in the early 80s, when Nick Park first chose the name for Peter Sallis to read out when still self producing A Grand Day Out. The "World of Wallace and Gromit" documentary feature on the 1999/2000 DVD release of the original trilogy is where I first heard of the 'saved the company' story, and was one of the first appearances of the W&G branded cheese. I first heard of the origins of the cheese with the monks on a 2019 episode of Songs of Praise. I'm also reminded of a typical bad joke from Countdown's original host, the late Richard Whiteley: "Where is Wensleydale? Between Tuesleydale and Thursleydale."

The marketing department would have been ecstatic - it was free advertising on a national TV channel (Channel 4 Christmas Eve). Later mentions were on BBC, so it wasn't only free TV advertising, it was on a channel you couldn't buy it. For reference - I worked at a place that, due to a mild double entendre in its bus stop adverts, landed mentions on every almost news programme (including all 4 BBC radio channels, and Locals), and most national newspapers, on the back of a £15k national signage (bus stops, bus sides, a few taxi doors, and a handful of billboards) only campaign. It got penetration (as reflected in sales) at almost 200% over what they expected for similar priced campaigns.

It's a pity you can't get the plain Wensleydale cheese, but it's probably not "exotic" enough to attract American importers. My wife and I often holiday in Wensleydale and the surrounding area (it's our personal "heaven") so naturally we know the cheese well. I'd recommend you visit Wensleydale for yourself (it's stunningly beautiful) but you're thousands of miles away, while it's just a 70 mile drive for us.

Wensleydale is a Prince among cheeses. Its flavour is subtle and delicate yet distinctive, and its crumbly texture goes perfectly with crackers. (I'm a bit of a fan. Can you tell ? 😉) It was probably first made by French monks from Roquefort Abbey who travelled to Yorkshire and founded Jervaulx Abbey in lower Wensleydale, bringing with them their cheese making skills and then using the sheep's milk plentiful in the Yorkshire Dales. Incidentally, as well as the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes there are others in the area making their own brands of Wensleydale cheese, though on a much smaller scale. You can find them if you visit the area.

A while back, when my Dad and I went to Jungle Jim's, looking through the international cheeses [I'm from America, BTW], I saw some Wensleydale cheese, and remembering how Wallace liked it, wanted to try it, but was turned off from doing so because the ingredients of the cheese contained fruit, something I did not want to eat at the time. One of these days, I wanna see if I can get myself to have another attempt at trying wensleydale, to see if I like it just as much as Wallace. *Update: My Dad recently went to Jungle Jim's to find some Wensleydale, but literally all they had were the types with fruit in them. I'm guessing they don't get shipments of regular Yorkshire.

The one Dimmock makes more of with the blend is nasty and gross with few people touching it in favor of the Extra Mild White Cheddar that ends up almost the same as Farmers/Wisconsin only harder or softer depending on the type you bought.

Nothing wrong with Wensleydale Cheese, its always been one of my favourites, along with Caerphelly which I obviously cant spell. I am truly sorry that Peter Sallis (sp?) is no longer with us, his Yorkshire accent was as iconic as the wonderful Brass Band music. The remastered videos with an orchestra are a poor substitute for a dyed-in-the-wool W&G fan like me, Yorkshire bred 'n all, but------------shocking thought maybe there are NO brass bands in existence now?? Please Please dont let W&G die, they are unique in every way, and the very best of British humour and creativity. In fact, I have just had a numero uno idea, I shall stipulate that my video (yes, THAT long ago) of A Grand Day Out" shall be played at my funeral, the only other item to be played is "Those were the days, my friend" sung by Mary Hopkins. Should make NZ sit up and take notice, dont you think?? Ex-Pat Jilly balfour. 87 + years and still going strong.
