What a great day. You two have tackled boat issues that many boat owners don't have the stomach for. You definitely attack problems. Damn, you cut the deck right away and renewed your fuel tanks. On that issue alone, most owners would have struggled with fuel problems for years and tried all sorts of other solutions. But you have rock solid fuel now, no worries there. And going after the entire drivetrain, props, struts, shafts, and the vibration damper, again many would have tried to get away with less but they'd never have the end result that you have. You get out of a boat what you put in. Next up, make sure you don't have any leaks whatsoever in your hydraulic steering system. On my Tiara Open, the helm unit leaked just a little bit and I ignored it. Big mistake--I lost steering entirely at the worst time, coming in a busy inlet. In the end, with some disassembly, a $2 o-ring solved the problem. It's been 10 years and no issues. You can do one better than me and I'm sure you will. Love your channel and wishing you the best.

There is no better feeling than knowing your boat is running well and being on the water on a beautiful day. I’ve done a lot of winter boating. It can be beautiful. You are doing things the right way. Gaining experience and learning. You are on your way to being the experts for others to follow.

The tender is a wee ripper! Not the cheapest no but one of the best I've seen in that size and I've seen a lot of tenders. I'm very happy to see things are finally going right for you with Boutari, I'm going thru a rough path (mostly of my own making with a bit of "help" from a difficult landlady at a farm I lease) and it really helps to see others who I care about having a win. It really helps. I'm saddened to hear about the passing of Rolf under what were (I assume by the wording), particularly tragic circumstances. Seeking help is so important before it gets to that point and men in particular are very hesitant to do so. You and Colin (Foxes Afloat) are a constant reminder that mental health is important and not something to hide away. Far too many men present a cheery outlook while slowly dying on the inside and that needs to be addressed.

30 knots what an achievement! Not much wake at higher speeds, some bouncing, trim tabs. Marvelous.The relief, the joy, unbridled even from Richard. Any data on fuel burn at varying speeds, rpm, distance, weight vs wind, tide, current with existing props? No one complained about the cold and early start.

You both mentioned the acceleration several times - this leads me to agree on the prop pitch. Sacrifice acceleration for a greater speed at a lower engine rev. This would also deliver fuel savings.
@olof.aolsson8441
@olof.aolsson8441 10 месяцев назад
Tip for you, to easier handling the boat. Put the gear and throttle in the same leaver! The leavers you have for the throttles, is already prepped for gearleaver to. So you'll elimiting handmovements to only using one hand for manouvering the engines, and one for the wheel.
@taswegian62
@taswegian62 10 месяцев назад
I think that you might have a point about the props. Back in the 1980's we ran a 48ft GRP patrol boat, 7 tonnes dry, with 2 Detroit 8V 92 Ti diesels which made 31.6 kn over the measured mile, WOT 2100rpm. That was acceptance trials with 12 people onboard. With the regular crew (2) indicated speed was ~35kn.
@lakesidesecurity3845
@lakesidesecurity3845 10 месяцев назад
Great work guys. If your getting 30 knots flat out with a clean hull and clean stern gear, the prop pitch is very close to perfect. With a dirty boat it’ll work out right. A boat that’s slightly under pitch when clean always works when it’s dirty. Where as an over pitch boat bogs the engines down and becomes slow and less efficient. Have a safe trip.

Absolutely brilliant work. The high five says it all. That well deserved seal of approval from Richard. Cant wait for the next episode and hoping everything goes well on the voyage. It was interesting to see the map planning and to learn about how certain passages have to coincide with the height of the tides and other variables. There is something to be learned from all of videos - that's one thing that keeps me watching. Well done.

The work you showed us in previous videos evidently paid off in a successful sea trial, great to watch! Having been on several sea trials myself I wonder if you compiled a plot of speed-power-rpm points? Could you show us the graph? Or maybe your sea trial wasn't long enough to record those points? I think 30 knots is great! If the pitch isn't quite perfect to "hit the corner" of rated RPM and rated power at the same time, I would be satisfied you're close enough if you can do 30 knots without exceeding the redline. Remember, as the hull and propellers foul during a typical season, power required at each speed will increase while RPM's will remain about the same. So, having a reserve of torque at the redline is what I like to see when fresh out of dock.

Nothing quite like that feeling when you put her up on the plane. Especially after a few hiccups. Don't do anything with prop sizes or pitch in a hurry, wait until she is fully loaded with all the stores, fuel, water and crew that you anticipate most of your cruising will be done at before fettling anything. Fair seas and following tides.

Congratulations on getting your boat (one of them) working sweetly. As a former Brit, now living on the Southern Oregon coast, I too have had a few boats. Older boats make you you realize that boat stands for Bring Out Another Thousand. We now have a new purpose built tuna boat that only costs us the harbor mooring fees, regular services and fuel. Life is not so complicated anymore and boat ownership is now a pleasure as you will see for yourselves. Once again, enjoy your first long distance cruise, it becomes very addictive.

I would trust your prop spec. With a diesel the fuel system is supply based not demand. So if you increase pitch it may drop the revs for a given speed, but might not be in a ‘sweet spot’, so the speed controller will overfuel trying to maintain the revs you’re asking for - even if those revs are lower. Yes more revs usually mean more fuel, and you might feel it can go faster, but the hull type, displacement, power & torque curves, target cruising speed will all have been in the calculation for your prop spec. to be efficient. Michigan have been spec’ing props for a long time so don’t beat yourself up that they are not as right as you think they might be - they are far from wrong. Getting the vibes out must be a massive relief 👍

I've had a few night runs across open water when someone's called out "Eyes out for Jerry, lads. I hear the Tirpitz is out!" and no one laughs because we're all looking for a battlecruiser lol. Then it sinks in that were; 80 years too late and in the South Pacific...... Gemma, I think you might want to hunt up some new gloves for the boat. The woolies are probably nice and warm, but the moment they get they're a liability and there's no second chances at sea. See if you can find something waterproof and comfortable, then see if they're also warm. For mooring, berthing or picking up lines a good rule is - Never approach anything faster than you're willing to hit it.
