Back in winter, I tried starting some seeds with a method called winter sowing. It was a bit of an experiment, so let's check in on how these seedlings are doing so far! We'll see if winter sowing was a success or failure!

Thanks for sharing. None of my poppy and snapdragon seeds came up this year. I'll be looking again for them next year. Our winters have major temperature changes throughout also. I have had on many occasions seeds that I plant one year come up the following year. Last year I had a ton of cucumbers in places which I had not planted them. Then I remembered, I planted those seeds in those places the year before and they never came up. As fare as winter sowing in jugs, I also have St John's Wort up in a jug from the year before last. Absolutely crazy but, I am very thankful! I tend not to give up on things for this reason. He works in mysterious ways.

That’s such a fun surprise! I’ll be sure to give my seeds a little more time to sprout!

I’m in zone 6, on the border of 6a/6b. There are so many variables with sowing seeds, especially with winter sowing - I’m planning to try again next year and compare results with this year.

I think you screwed up. I made a similar mistake like you did, and more than 1 time by the way. When you transplant your plants you will be disturbing, and maybe killing the roots of your plants. I ended up killing some of my plants because I destroyed the rooting system due to planting too many plants together. What I overlooked just like you is the proper process of planting. I spent quite a bit of my time researching how gardeners grow their plants, and I found a pattern. The pattern that I found just, so happened to be a different method of growing plants. We both had a similar style of growing our plants, but I recently changed my setup to fix my incorrect way of growing plants. I am going to pretend I never heard you say anything about using jugs to germinate your seeds. Maybe you could have germinated your few year old seeds, and I think the problem is the jugs, but it could be the seeds. I never used jugs to germinate my seeds, and I never saw, or heard of anyone who tried using jugs either ! I am aware of seeds having an expiration date, so maybe older seeds will not grow. Just try using seeds that are within 1 year of age. Lastly what happens when a gardener germinates his, or her seeds like you, and I did well the plants fight, for resources, so this is why your results are not looking too good such as some plants grew, and look healthy, and others did not.

This is actually a fairly common method of starting certain types of seeds (called winter sowing). It definitely doesn’t work for all types of seeds, and a lot of what I planted was experimental - I’ll see what transplants well and what doesn’t as the season goes on. I didn’t start the majority of my seeds this way - most were started inside under grow lights, or direct seeded in the garden. I’m glad that you found a method of starting seeds that works well for you!

@@HomesteadOnAPrayer When I first started growing my plants then nothing grew, so I did more research then I tried growing again then I succeeded, but I screwed up at the same time, so I did even more research and I tried again to grow, so now 7 out 8 plants started growing, A common method of growing that has failing results really is not that great to use in my opinion. I wish you all the best!
