This movie is based upon the short story "Story of Your Life", written by Ted Chiang in 1998. However, there are some significant differences between the book and the movie. For example, in the novella, nine "looking glasses" arrive in America, and a total of 112 worldwide. The film reduced that number and altered the dimensions to a more profound effect. Interestingly, the film was also to be called Story of Your Life after the source novella, but the test audiences did not like that title, so it was changed to "Arrival."

@@ak.foesevyea interstellar takes the lead now in my scifi movies list interstellar is still 1st although arrival took the lead from space odyssey and now arrival is my 2nd favorite scifi

This movie did the book justice in a way that is so unique and beautiful. The many adaptations and creative approaches the directors and the writers took simply blew my mind.

I would have liked narration over the flashbacks. The narrated flashbacks gave me a lot more emotional connection to Amy Adams’ character. Justice for Flapper & Raspberry!!!

I loved the movie so much that I took out the book by Chang from the library. The movie made several improvements. Usually, the book is much better than the movie that it is worth reading, but not so much in this case.

I've watched so many science fiction movies with big twists/reveals at the end that I paid a lot of attention to the little details. The 'flashbacks', the phenomenon they mention that changes your way of thinking based on which language(s) you speak, the circular language indicating the absence of a start or end in terms of time, etc. I was kinda sad that I already knew in which direction the plot was going, but it was a great movie nonetheless.

“Arrival” was *such* an improvement on the title! It speaks not only to the arrival of both the aliens and her daughter, but also to that question of what should govern your life, a celebration of arrivals or a fear of departures?

My theory is that if you are a male sci-fi aficionado, you might be disappointed. Those who loved the movie, as I do, realize that the main plot is about the daughter, and that involves a lot of crying.

Movie was absolutely incredible...ly underwhelming.. 🤦🏻‍♂️ idk I felt like maybe they should have actually started the war at the end but stopped it before the aliens destroy earth.. up the stakes a little bit and show some big CGI mind-blowing action scenes.. it wasn't all bad i just think it would make a better black mirror episode or something.. I do think cutting down the number of ships was a good call tho.. comdenses it down to lesser scale better for universe building. If there was hundreds they'd want you to explain more about what's happening with them. With just a few you don't have to have a bunch of extra overall meaningless exposition about what they're doing off screen..
