I have been sewing for over 60 years, so I figured I'd just watch for the pleasure of listening to you and wouldn't pick up anything new. But I had forgotten about the upside down threading for darts, it never occurred to me to make a decorative pattern by combining utility stitches or use the triple straight stitch to make topstitching show up!

I learned some new things. I have an embroidery hack for you. You can create circles by using a thumb tack taped to your sewing machine that you use to hold the fabric as you spin it around.. You can look it up for a better explaination. I've made linked circles across the bottom of garments this way. It would be cute on tea towels too. They sell a gadget for this but the thumb tack works just fine.

73 (sewing 60+ years) and never knew what that little button on the foot was for. Have been making a patio enclosure with shade cloth and zippers to allow it to be rolled open or zipped closed my sewing machine hated the job especially the lumpy bits. Still working on a similar swimming pool cover will be so helpful. Thanks Alisa

Hi Alisa, great tips, thank you! Another way to enhance top stitching, if you don't have dedicated top stitching thread, is to use two spools of your regular thread through your needle. A top stitching needle is handy for this because it has a bigger eye so it's easier to get two threads through your needle.
@AllieCasey

That's what I do when topstitching...double up the thread using a second bobbin.

I thought I didn’t need all these decorative stitches that the B38 comes with…now I am thinking of buying a second sewing machine and wondering if I should get one with more decorative stitches. I do use them but not that often. But your white blouse with navy decorative stitches made me go: “wow!!”

Hi Alisa, I did a tutorial video on the presser foot with the black button to go over bulky seams. Please stop by and take a look at it! Have a blessed week, and happy sewing.😊 Wow! The button put for darning! I wish I had heard about this a couple of months ago when I was trying to mend a tear in one of my garments. I saw that darning stitch on my sewing machine, but I didn't realize you could use your button hole foot to darn.

I am in my 60s and have been sewing since I was 12. I didn't know the purpose of that little black button. Something that I have done is use embroidery stitches and sparkling silver thread on a denim jacket for my daughter. I did the back panel and the pocket flaps on the front. I got a lot of inquiries about making that denim jacket for others but I don't sew for others as I tend to be a teeny bit of a perfectionist, hahaha, and would find it too stressful. One of the other things I have done with the embroidery stitches is to use a twin needle and different coloured threads. It makes for a pretty result but you must be careful and check the width of the pattern selected so that it does not cause the twin needle to move outside of the hole on the needle plate as it will break the needle and may damage your machine. I am new to your channel and love seeing the things you have made. You are a beautiful sewer. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

Great video. I ordered a used copy of the 101 secrets because I Iove sewing books too. I knew about the black button as a leveler. But, I didn't know the correct way to engage it. While watching your lesson, I went Aha! that is why I struggle to get it to work. I paused the video while I ran back to look at my sewing machine. Yes, there is a solid looking button hole which probably is a darning stitch. Score! Thanks for breaking down the process of embroidery using the machine. As I have said before, I loved how you used it on the white blouse. Sewing with the bobbin thread has to be my favorite tip though. That is a nice tool to have in my tool bag.

Yay, I am so happy that you ordered the book, I love the Singer series. I have my mom's Singer book that is decades old - so many useful things. My copy is used, too, I think I got it for a few dollars - and it is a steal! With the little knob - it takes a little maneuvering to press it just right, but after a few times it will be like a second nature. I use it very often, but then I wondered why they make this little knob only on the zig-zag foot? Ah, so many questions :) oh, also, I can't remember right now if I mentioned it or not, but there is a Members Extra Deep Dive for the white blouse - all about pattern, sleeves, and every obstacle that I had with it :)

My pleasure :) I am happy to share the things that I learn while I sew, that self-leveling knob really helps, especially when top stitching the sleeve where you go over the yoke part and of course in many other instances as well!
@labecquerelle9873
@labecquerelle9873 8 месяцев назад
I was making a top one night, and experimented sewing around the yoke with a decorative stitch in a bright color, It was an intricate stitch, and I noticed that the design varied in places, especially around the corners. Next time I want to embellish a top, I think I'll more or less make bias tape, or rectangular tape, and run the design on the tape and stitch it where I want it. Another use for left over fabric!
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 7 месяцев назад
Good thinking! You are so right, hen you go around corners because you are taking a linear designs and conforming it to a curve - it probably will vary even more on spread out designs, and probably less on those designs that repeat more often/are smaller.

The sewing from bobbin thread is new. I have used decorative stitches before. When preparing and attaching patch pockets, I hem the pocket, the find the placement, fold the edge of the pocket and press. Now fold the raw edge to meet the fold. I start sewing the pocket down with a short satin stitch to reinforce the change to the straight stitch until a come back to the end with another satin stitch to complete.
