Before Woodstock was known for run down warehouses and hipsters, it used to be a quaint farming town with an awesome beach.
We take a look at the fascinating history of Woodstock in Cape Town including how it was named by drunk fishermen.
Special thanks to:
The Tap Room
Etienne du Plessis for the historic photos

Our family lived at 34 Brabant Street Woodtock from 1950 till 1956.I was 12 when we moved to Athlone.A large part of the beach towards Paarden Eiland still existed. We used to walk down Beach Road to the beach.Watkins Pharmaceuticals was on the right hand side and so was the Woodstock Swimming Baths. We walked over the National Road which was a narrow ribbon of road to get to beach which is where the container docks presently is.It was beautifully pristine beach. We used to spend most Sunday mornings on the beach.

Might be a bit late, but my grandfather helped build that narrow national road. My dad was a young boy at the time. They used to live in all the small towns so my dad, his brother and sister could go to school. The children had to work after school and do homework at night. When I saw how they were ripping up the road to build the new one, I had a lump in my throat, but time goes on. Till this day I can still see the holes were they used explosives to get the rocks to crush to lay the roads.

I have a photo of my dad holding the neighbors dog under his arm while standing on Woodstock Beach. Used to be you could go and catch a tan and a swim there. Now, from the same spot, you can probably catch the 8:30 train to Simonstown.

What a disgrace that a beach was destroyed, even the ANC could not have been more destructive. Treaty cottage should have been declared a national monument and should also have been preserved. no respect for history in this country. Wonderful video . Thanks so much.

exactly, and what is almost as sad as the destroyed beach is that most cape townians could not care less. they are more interested in the buried diamonds than the tragic loss of a natural and cultural landmark and recreational area. I feel the destruction of the citybowl's only beach and much of the coastline really underlines what is so wrong with this city: a beautiful but damaged place and people with a selfish disregarding energy.

While this video is nice and well put together, it doesn't do justice to the gentrification of Woodstock currently underway. The recent trendiness of Woodstock has the unfortunately resulted in a number of local inhabitants losing their roots, community and associated identity with the town. This video makes it sound as if continued change is ok, but the gentrification is not.
