You are my literal inspiration. I started a bit later for piano, at 13, and I'm trying my ass off. I love every moment, getting a song wrong, and then finally getting it is the best to me. I'm 15 now, looking to continue my musical learning as a classical musician, and hearing you say how you started later in life as well and to see how you got into Julliard, makes my day. As you did, even though it might now mean much to you, I going to be the best I can be.

This is a fantastic comment! I can relate to this so much. I'm 13 now and I restarted piano after a 3 year long hiatus. Even this comment is inspiring. I hope to get in too! Good luck to you!!

What's stopping me from going to Juilliard? I'm on the other side of the world... And I don't think it's very cheap
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
+Katie Brown It's very expensive, yes, but there's not much stopping you. They have a lot of financial aid and they LOVE international students :)

Hey Molly, think about it! 100-6.7= 93.3. I was saying the OTHER 92.3 not including yourself, so you have to subtract one more. hehe

+ThatViolaKid Hello, I'm a high school junior who's planning on auditioning for guitar next year, and I was wondering how much does the audition repertoire differentiate from year to year?
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
Keilone G. I honestly don't know the answer to that question because I've only auditioned once haha. I would imagine it wouldn't change too drastically, if at all. You can find all the requirements on Juilliard.edu!

Lol "like Curtis," Curtis is harder to enter than Juilliard
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
+slash6ds Yes, and no. I think they're just different
@saltag
@saltag 8 лет назад
+ThatViolaKid Well Curtis does generally have a lower acceptance rate, but I suppose you're right, it doesn't make it...harder? Mmm
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
If you look at the number of students at Curtis vs the number of students at Juilliard, you'll find a reason why the acceptance is lower. There are just fewer spots. Not to mention that Juilliard also has other disciplines like Dance, Jazz, and Drama.

Another great video! I'm glad you said you don't have to go to Juilliard or a major conservatory in order to be a great musician. That's something I didn't realize until long after I graduated college. It just feels like a great achievement to go to a big conservatory that makes people feel like the cream of the crop. Kinda like ivy league schools.

I so love you for this! I've played violin for almost 25 years and I went to a state university for my bachelors and had an amazing music education! My teacher had a DMA in violin AND viola from Juilliard and he killed me! (In a good way) Lol! I used to think back then I wouldn't be successful going to a non-conservatory type school, but it's been 10 years since I've graduated and I'm proud to say I am 100% a successful professional violinist. I tell my students all the time, it doesn't matter the school, it matters the work you put in!! I will be sending each of my students this video amongst a few more! Thanks for inspiring! You get it!
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
+niquebud Thank you so much!!! I'm so happy that people like you in the world exist! We have to change paradigms and shift the way people think about what we do! It means the world to me that you'll be sharing this with you students!! I'm gonna keep working hard to produce more value for you and your students! :D
@niquebud
@niquebud 8 лет назад
+ThatViolaKid you're absolutely welcome! I just appreciate the fact that you're discussing this. Kids/students need to know that while Juilliard is an amazing school, hard work trumps everything, along with a great teacher, of course, but a great teacher means nothing without the practice room. I know plenty of Juilliard graduates who do nothing with their degrees as well!! I just think it has always been this culture of certain classical musicians to think they are better because they went to those schools, and that's the problem and discussion we need to be having. I still get asked on some gigs what school I went to by other musicians who somehow thinks that matters now lol. I'm here with you on the same gig, making the same $$. I'm just so happy you're discussing this, it is very powerful for a student to hear this! :) be blessed sir!

Thanks for your advice. I just found out I didn't get past preliminaries 😭. I cried for a while because I really did think what I put out there was amazing... I worked so hard. Now I'm questioning everything about myself and my playing. I'm trying to stay positive though because I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

+ThatViolaKid hi I started playing violin in 7th grade and I'm a freshman now. I am (this is confusing but) 3rd chair in second violin but I'm one of four freshman in the top orchestra at our school (yup that was confusing). I love playing violin with my entire being but I don't know if I would be ready to apply to Juilliard straight out o high school. I was wondering how good you were when you got out of high school and if you think it would be remotely possible for me to get in as an under grad
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 8 лет назад
+Alexi Alfieri I didn't think I was good enough to get into Juilliard after I graduated high school, so I didn't even bother auditioning. I started in 6th grade, so I felt the gap was too big. I haven't heard you play, so I wouldn't be able to give you an accurate opinion on whether or not you should apply! I say it can't hurt! :)

Hey TVK! I know I've mentioned this in a comment I wrote on another one of your videos but, do you have to be a freakishly, child boss prodigy to get into Juilliard?? My piano experience is rather fragmented as I started playing at around 5 or 6, but didn't get classical training until 17. I played from 17-25 years old and stopped because I started school full time. However, i just started back again. I'm getting back on track and I'm pretty advanced classically but not at all in terms of jazz. I hear and read of so many folks that go to Juilliard and Curtis and NEC who have been playing since 3 and it's been their life's work. For me? It hasn't been that way but I still adore the work and I still want to be serious musician so, I'm aspiring to get my masters in music. I guess what I'm asking is, what are they looking for in a student? Are they looking for people who have played from out the womb and have won a slew of awards and competitions?? Does someone like myself, an adult student with passion, getting back into the swing of things, have a chance at getting in just or, does my choppy musical past not fit the profile?? Thanks!!
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 7 лет назад
Your musical past doesn't really matter. I started at age 12, and was accepted as a graduate student--which is arguably much harder than undergraduate studies. All that really matters is how you play, if you have potential, and if the teachers feel inspired to teach you. I would suggest getting a trial lesson

pulling the corners of my mouth up, too tired to smile. Also thx for this, very helpful, i got the potential but needed some motivation, can't see the end of the road and am feeling a little blue, very dark blue also have some issues with music, only been playing for ten years, but not so much practice, not enough that i feel like i am juliard material yet, need some more practice and a little more effort, also don't see what i'm doing bad on, too enveloped in the music and when it is evident, i just work until it satrts to make sense and kind of getting it, then its dark and the custodians are the only ones in the building. HAYYYYYYLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!
