The word 'Kaffir' is essentially the n-word. White South Africa had a long histroy of horrendous racism. Fortunately, the current generation seems to be taking a much more enlightened attitude (not everyone, obviously, but broadly speaking). Rika is played by Patsy Kensit, a British model and soap opera actor. Being Australian you probably saw her popping up in British media imports, in the same way we are familiar with your actors.

At least 2 or 3 times a day, I made sure I was in the projection booth during that extended sex scene. Patsy Kensit is so amazingly beautiful I just couldn't resist. It was another 5 years before it fully changed in law, black people got the vote, and Nelson Mandela was elected President.

Kaffir (or as the Dutch word is spelled Kaffer) is an Afrikaner insult that is considered quite hurtful. It was usually directed at the black people of South Africa. It's derived from the Arabic word Kafir, which means unbeliever or blasphemer. Kaffer in Dutch is actually used in the meaning of idiot, fool or big lummox. It has however gone out of fashion these days.

Great reaction to a great movie! I like it as much as, and probably a little bit more than, the first movie. Our characters are established now so we can put more effort into developing them further instead of introducing them., and that makes the movie quicker developing and better for me. Though with that intro scene it's not like we could have gotten into the action any quicker. 😀 These films made me really appreciate how good of an actor Mel Gibson is. He put so much energy and accuracy into showing Riggs as a man teetering on the literal edge of self-destruction in the first movie, and in this one he was perfect depicting a man who was recovering his life but there were still jagged edges in his soul that he could cut himself badly on psychologically, like the gold pen and finding out that his wife really didn't die in a random traffic accident. Then his chance at a healing relationship is so brutally taken away from him with the murder of Rika, a murder that just amplified the evil and uncaring natures of the villains in the movie. No one expected Rika to be DEAD watching this for the first time. We all figured, like with Roger's daughter Rianne in the first movie, she'd be used as a pawn to manipulate our heroes and would be rescued at the end, because OF COURSE that would have to happen. Instead Rika loses her life and Riggs gets another sharp edge in his soul. 😞 British acting legend Joss Ackland played a brilliant criminal mastermind hiding behind diplomatic immunity in this. I believe he's still alive, though he's got to be 95 or so now. I remember him most from Hunt For Red October where he played a Russian member of the diplomatic corps. 😀 "Whatever you need . . . Leo . . . Getz!" Pesci was great in this role and he deserved to get another shot at as the comic relief kind of character he does so well and did so well here. He's another great actor. One of my favorite unheralded/unknown actors, Jenette Goldstein, was in this movie too. She died in this movie (the police officer who died trying to go for a swim only for the diving board to go boom) which is par for the course I guess since she also dies in Terminator 2 (as John Connor's foster mother) and Aliens (as the badazz heavy gunner Vasquez). The Apartheid South African government was starting to go to pieces when this came out, which made them the perfect enemies as, with the ruling party being weakened by other countries not doing business with them, it made sense that party loyalists like Arjen Rudd (the diplomat in this movie) would turn to illegal enterprises to try to keep finances coming in to the ruling party to keep them in power. But the end of Apartheid was inevitable. Thank goodness.

I'd hear about police chases happening in LA on the local evening news. The Hollywood movie chases are much more spectacular. The hospital I worked at hired a bunch of English nurses and, what they expected was exactly what you're experiencing: constant police car chases with gunfire, explosions, cars flipping over and so forth. And they came anyway. They were pleasantly surprised at how nice and calm it really is. Of course, in some parts of town, it could be more exciting, but not where I (or they) lived.

12:44 Not really, the movie really gets it extremely wrong on purpose since the plot is dependent on it. As a diplomat you have diplomatic immunity, sure. So yeah the host country cannot send you to jail when you commit a crime, but if you cause trouble they can most definitely just boot you out. In general diplomats tend to be careful to act within the confines of the law since even small infractions can land you in hot water with your own country, lower level diplomatic aides have been sent home for racking up parking tickets, so the events of this movie is pretty ludicrous. The special status of diplomats is important since it means they can do their jobs without fear of reprisals from the host country, i.e. "don't shoot the messenger". 12:56 It's basically the South African "N-word".

One of the plot points that a lot of people don’t realize is that during this period of time possession of krugerrands in the United States was illegal. They were solid gold and were used to distribute the gold from South Africa so they could buy things in the world market. The countries that opposed apartheid refused to accept them so South Africa was embargoed without really being embargoed. That is why the discussion about keeping one for a souvenir was in the movie.

Kaffer is kind of the South African form of the N word. It is from the Apartheid and post Apartheid eras when only white people were allowed to vote or have a say in how the country was governed. I know it is some time ago for most of you young people watching this reaction but I find it hard to believe that Apartheid has been forgotten so quickly outside of South Africa. So many people struggled and died for freedom, and when finally won Nelson Mandela managed to prevent an all out slaughter of the white minority with his understanding, forgiveness and leadership during his time as President of South Africa. Please watch 'Long Walk to Freedom' which tells that tale so well. Great reaction Mary even if some of the understanding was missing. +1 :)

You’ll definitely like Lethal Weapon 3 & 4!!!

As much as I love the first one, I feel like this one was even better. The characters were really fleshed out more, the final confrontation seemed more stacked against our hero’s versus Riggs taking on Mr. Joshua with half the LAPD on Murtaugh’s front lawn. The stakes just seemed higher and also, we get to meet the folks that killed Riggs’ wife. It also balanced comedy with action. Could you imagine if Joe Pesci’s character was stuck in Goodfellas/ Casino mode. That would be quite intense:)

Enjoyed your reaction to this wonderful sequel. I hope you continue onwards with films three and four (in which both, besides being worthy of the series, continues the story).

@08:20 that 'k' word that rhymes with 'gaffer' is South Africa's version of the 'n' word that rhymes with 'digger'.

Kaffir is the word you are looking for, don’t be silly with the rhymes, we are all adults here. And it’s being used in context.

Diplomatic immunity is a real thing, but it's not absolute. In this instance, the US would contact the South African government and request they revoke his immunity. Alternatively, they could just kick him out of the country. The US absolutely could order him to leave, and impose sanctions and other actions against the South African government for backing him (which may also effect their standing with other countries). If the South African government agreed to withdraw his diplomatic status, then he'd no longer have immunity and the US police could arrest him like anyone else. However, it's worth noting that the South African government was Apartheid. And aggressively racist, fascist government that was corrupt and downright evil. So it's not totally outside the realm of possibility that many of their diplomats WOULD be openly criminal. But even they would unlikely tolerate one of their diplomats engaging in criminal activity this overt. Starting to murder cops would be FAR too much heat. The Apartheid government would drop him like a hot potato.

Number 3 is the weakest film of the four. Number 4 is just crazy as it has Jet Lee in it.

Looking forward to LW 3, it's the best of the 4. I knew the South African accent because in high school we had a foreign exchange student from Zimbabwe. At first, we were surprised she was white, and very pleased she was gorgeous.

Such a great scene during the toilet bomb when Roger tells Riggs he loves him without knowing how to say it. They had been through quite a bit with the abduction of his oldest daughter in the first film. An unspoken brotherhood that can only be shared by them.

I heard the original premise for Lethal Weapon 2 was much more serious, less comedic. That at the end Riggs was suppose to die and ending the series. But during screen tests the audience didn’t like it hence the ending it is now.
