Ptolemus is a Victor from district 2 and Sage is a Victor from district 10. They fall in love prior to the quell and their romance is heavily televised as Ptolemus comes from a “legacy” in which both his parents were Victors as well. They use each other as sanction to the Capitol people and the horrors they’ve experienced.
Until the Third Quarter Quell.
Now the two lovers are to be thrust back into the Arena, only one of them permitted to make it out alive. Ptolemus would do anything to protect Sage, including die for her, and Sage would do the same. She knows about the plan to break out Katniss from the arena so she allies herself with him and the other careers to protect Katniss in exchange for them also saving her and Ptolemus.
