Great reaction. To me this is definitely a Christmas movie. Alan Rickman was one of my favorite villins in any movie. FYI, this was his first movie role. Until then he was a stage actor. There's an old saying. It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber fall off the Nakatomi building. Yippee-Kai-yay!
He wasn’t, strictly speaking, just a stage actor. He also appeared in quite a few television series, the most famous one probably being “The Barchester Chronicles” (in which he plays the rather slimy Obadiah Slope).
"This guy looks like a bad guy, for sure." That's Alexander Godunov, former principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet in the Soviet Union until he defected to the United States. He also played an Amish farmer in 'Witness' with Harrison Ford. Enjoy your reviews!
Yippy-ki-yay! If you'd like another fun Alan Rickman movie and you haven't seen Galaxy Quest yet, you should add that to your list. Even more enjoyable if you have some familiarity with the original Star Trek series.
@@haissem8 that’s not correct. Sorry. Why Die Hard is considered a Christmas film whereas your offerings do not is because of numerous reasons. And not just because it is set at that time of the year. Reasons such as the plot requires it to be Christmas for the party to be happening, for John Maclean to be over to see his wife and children, for the lack of police on the street leading to the office bound cop having to respond to the call among the main points. If it wasn’t for being set at Christmas all the variables wouldn’t have come together. The party wouldn’t be happening and John Maclean wouldn’t be there for starters.
@@TheManFromUNCLEIllya Incorrect. It doesn't require the party to be happening; it requires the money to be in the vault which was the whole point. It doesn't require a lack of police; in fact, Gruber's plan requires the police to arrive in order for the power to get cut and open the vault. You could just as well say "it's a limo movie; he's picked up by a limo, a limo hits the getaway ambulance; and they drive away in a limo." You see, what you are doing is falling into the logical fallacy 'correlation proves causation'. A Christmas party is taking place and is stopped because a robbery is happening, but instead of seeing that it is a robbery movie, you think it's a christmas movie. It's the same logical trap that evolutionists fall into; 'these animals look similar to each other therefore they're related'.
The only way this is not a Christmas movie you would have to disqualify it for reasons that would also disqualify tons of movies that are not even debated and well considered by virtually everyone to be Christmas movies as well. If you use equal weights and measures, it is a Christmas movie or we have to redefine most of the Christmas movie canon, although given that most Christmas movies have nothing to do with Christmas [The birth of Jesus Christ] maybe that would be a wise thing to do. But, under the current standard of what makes a Christmas movie, it has to be or almost none are.
The fear on Alan Rickman’s face was genuine, the stunt people said they would drop him from 40 feet on the mat on the count of three but they dropped him on one.🤣
A couple of bits of trivia. The first one's cute. The second is a cool historical reference. When 'Die Hard' first came out, one reviewer described Reginald VelJohnson's character Al Powell as "Teddy-bear-like." I loved that because his is so lovable. According the official lore of the British Army's 57th Regiment of Foot, use of the term "die hard" to denote someone who, against all reason, refuses to give up originated in 1811 at the Battle of Albuera. The 57th was in imminent danger of being overrun by the French, and their Col. William Inglis was seriously wounded by grapeshot in the chest. Inglis refused to be evacuated from the battlefield and remained with his men, determined to hold to the last. As the 57th fought desperately to hold against the enemy, Inglis scouted to his men "Die hard, 57th, die hard!" Despite heavy losses, they managed to hold their ground until the British were finally able to send reinforcements and drive the French away. Afterwards, the french commander, Marshal Soult, complained "You cannot defeat such troops. I had penetrated their center. I had turned their flank. They were beaten. The day was mine. But they did not know how to run away!" and the 57th have been nicknamed "The Die Hards" ever since. There's evidence that the term "die hard" actually predates that battle, but it remains an extremely motivating and inspiring story, and the courage of 57th on that day was for real.
I love this movie. I watch it around Christmas every year. Alan Rickman was an awesome and memorable villain. I miss Alan he was such a wonderful actor. Edit: Die Hard 2 takes place at Christmas too, and the same song plays as the credit rolls.
Of, course it is, besides a Christmas party, Die Hard even has a Christmas Miracle in it with Ode to Joy playing as the vault opens that is full of Christmas Spirit. After all people say "It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off the Nakatomi Plaza"
Good reactions Jen. There are 4 more Die Hard movies, 2, 3, and 4 are good, 5 not so much. Die Hard 2 also takes place at Christmas time. Since you enjoyed this one, you will enjoy the next one also. You watch the movies and many of us will enjoy watching them with you. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
The limitless supply of bullets is a very 80s thing! But just because he's not often mentioned, I have to give some love to Paul Gleason as the police chief. If you wanted a blowhard authority figure in your movie, you called Paul, because nobody did that character better - the nasty teacher in The Breakfast Club, the shady security guy in Trading Places, the corrupt cop in Miami Blues... just seeing him in a supporting role makes me smile.
It's definitely a Christmas movie Jen. The plot was based on the fact it needed to happen during the Christmas party. Had John not been invited to the party he wouldn't have been there. And the terrorists needed those hostages and Takagi to carry out their plans. It was the most convenient time for them to attack. Love your reactions!
@@jenmurrayxo Also: about bringing an estranged family together. Her name is Holly. I mean, it's not a *traditional* Christmas movie, but saying it's not a Christmas movie is like saying "Grosse Pointe Blank" or "Mr Right" isn't a RomCom; it's a Christmas movie. In a similar vein - "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" is another Christmas/action movie; I'd *highly* recommend it. It's skews much funnier. It's not a big movie, unfortunately, so if you're looking to go for a much more well-known classic movie to grow your channel, it's not that. But it's very funny, very fun, and I'm confident you'll enjoy it. It stars Robert Downey Jr and a few others you may recognize. (Also, it may not grow your channel like a Game of Thrones or MCU react, but nobody else is doing KKBB - as far as I know - so maybe it'd help more than I think; everybody who likes it would be a lot more likely to find your channel since nobody else is doing it.)
Saw this in the theater. If you only see this DH movie, it stands on it's own for sure. Keep up the great work. Now you know, next year, to have Die Hard themed Christmas decorations.
I saw _Lethal Weapon_ right before I went into the service and _Die Hard_ right after I got to my unit. Martin Riggs, John McClane, and myself had one thing in common. All three of us carried the Beretta 92. I loved that pistol so much that after I got out I bought a Beretta 96. It wasn't until just now that I realized that the shoulder rig I used for many years is the same as the one that McClane wears. So either I'm a poser wannabe or the movie makers had good taste in firearms. I'm going for option B.
There are sequels. Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard, and A Good Day to Die Hard. They are decent . There are also 4 Lethal Weapon Films. Good stories. First one starts around the holidays like this film too.
Die Hard 2 is worth watching if only to get to Die Hard: With a Vengeance! And while people do love to call Die Hard a Christmas movie it's definitely one you can watch any time of the year. Also, got a major laugh out of John's feet getting a low-key MVP, very deserved
Great reaction Miss Murray 👍 Now you've seen the ultimate Xmas double bill, It's a Wonderful Life and Die Hard 😁 Please watch both DH 2&3 either for your channel or yourself. Both are great action movies. 4&5, not so much.
A naive RU-vid viewer is about to enter the Die Hard Zone.;) Get into Argyle's limousine for a ride to the Nakatomi Plaza building and the Christmas Party From Hell. It's an interesting "Christmas Cake" recipe: Take one "TV guy," add a stage actor, fold in a script worthy of Action movies of the time, bake in an improvised oven over flaming C4, and garnish with 9mm bullets. "Detective John McClane" is iconic because: He isn't a "Rambo clone," takes damage, has moments of fear/humor/introspection, has a working class background, and is "falling down tired" by the last quarter of the movie. So, "It isn't Christmas until 'Hans Gruber' falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.";) Finally, a song that (sorta) fits the movie: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wYHleFFhlFk.html
So . . . Karl . . . the long haired blond bad guy was Alexander Godunov. He was a famous ballet dancer who defected from Russia and later became an American citizen. He was also in the movie Witness. He died in 1995 at age 47. :-(
I hope Saving Private Ryan, Scarface, Exorcist, Psycho and many other classics. From the 50's to the 70's you'll be reacting to in the near future. Stay safe and be well !
Yes, Hans Gruber is indeed played by the late, lamented Alan Rickman. One of the most distinct voices and versatile actors in the world. He's played heroes, villains, and morally gray characters alike. He is and shall be missed. That exploded like that because that was a pretty big brick of C4, he put several detonator caps into it, and CRTs in general and those old phospher PC monitors in particular retain a sizable electric charge; if you've ever seen anyone work on classic Macs with a screen inside, you've seen them carefully discharge the CRT before taking it out; so he used the residual charge of the monitor that was active until just then set of the detonators in the C4. "Bad guy from the Goonies" Yeah, Robert Davi; he was also the main villain in License to Kill. Al is played by Reginald val Johnson, who's better known as Carl Winslow from Family Matters. Also the smarmy TV reporter also played Walter Peck, the EPA douch from Ghostbusters.
oh and PS. why have you not watched empire strikes back yet. I found you on this channel because you watched Star wars. but there has been a follow-up. Jen, bubby
This is literally the only christmas movie I never fail to watch on christmas. I mean everyone knows christmas can't start until Hans Gruber has fallen from the Nakatomi building, don't they? :-) Last year I was only a few seconds off; was WAY more pleased with myself than is likely healthy ;-) kerk hiraeth, Scotland
It absolutely IS a Christmas movie. Christmas drives the entire plot. The bad guys planned their robbery for the night of the Christmas party. McLane goes to L.A. to join his wife for Christmas. No Christmas = no movie.
OMG how have i not watched your die hard reaction jen i feel ashamed rn 😐 that little Santa hat looks adorable i bet it would have looked cute af on one of your pets 🥰 . I guarantee this is one of Quentin Tarantinos favourite films cuz you know FEET 😅 . Of all the bad guys the guy who grabbed candy out the stand cuz that would be me lol . I think the elevator explosion was made for you jen 💥💥 i have spoken
Great reactions, Jen! And yes, it's a Christmas movie. My only problem with the movie is when Karl "wakes up" on the stretcher at the end. 1) He lost his rifle when John and Karl are fighting hand-to-hand, and 2) EMTs WOULD NOT place a weapon on the stretcher with the passenger. But it serves the purpose in the movie to allow Al to finally be able to draw his gun again. I think are five movies in the franchise. But beginning with "Die Hard With a Vengence", John starts becoming a "superhero" / "superman" kind of protagonist. In the first two, he's an everyman who has been put in extraordinary circumstances. Don't get me wrong, the second (another Christmas movie) and third (a summer movie) are good movies. But from then on, watching the rest of the franchise is kind of iffy. I've only watched the fourth and fifth installments only once each, if that means anything. Just as an FYI, John McTiernan also directed 1987's Arnold Schwarzenegger film, "Predator", and 1990's Alec Baldwin / Sean Connery film, "The Hunt For Red October".
@@jenmurrayxo Karl is not on a stretcher. After the explosion, he wakes up, frees himself and makes his way out of the building. He conceals his gun under blanket or a jacket that he found laying around. I just checked the Blu-Ray we never see Karl laying down on a stretcher. I don't know where that idea came from.
@@Col_Fragg Yes... I always assumed that he got free when the roof explosion happened. It must have caused the chain he was hanging from to fall or loosen up.
main bad guy is Severus Snape Alan Rickman the director McTiernan, tricked Rickman on the fall at the end l so that Alan would look actually scared. Heard it in a behind the scenes vid. enjoying your channel Jen good work.Alo this was Rickman's first bad guy role in a holly Wood film
I think Hans Gruber is the only movie villain I ever wanted to see get away haha. Alan Rickman was so perfect and brought the film to another level. Do you watch Brooklyn Nine Nine? The lead character Jake is obsessed with Die Hard. It's so funny if you're a fan of the movie as there are so many Die Hard references throughout the series. This review was super cute and fun (love the hat too lol!)
Thank you! ☺ Such a fun movie! Alan Rickman was awesome!! I saw season 1 of Brooklyn 99 years ago but been meaning to rewatch & now I'll get the references lol 😆👍
It's worth it😂 It's a super funny show and the Die Hard references are endless lol. One of my faves was "You once took a train to Toronto to get a Canadian VHS copy of Die Hard!".. "I heard it had better sound quality!" 🤣 I'm from Toronto and have actually taken a train to NYC... That's a 10hr+ trip one way hahaha You'll definitely enjoy all the references now ☺️
Jen. Don't know if you will see this. Not sure how far back you read. Anyway in case you do read this there is indeed another, in fact there is a 2nd and 3rd. Both of them have as much action as this one.
For the time, John Maclaine was a very down to earth & 'mortal' action hero. They also did pay much more attention to reloading than typical movies from that era. ^_^ Now for those who came to this film following Bruce Willis' role on the show, "Moonlighting", there is an homage to that show here. One of the tropes in the series was that Bruce Willis & Cybil Shepherd's characters would often verbally spar by talking over each other. When John first gets to the tower, he & Holly do exactly that. Very cute. The film was again, realistic compared to films of the time, in terms of the challenges John had to face. The only stunt that still really gets to me is when his Gun-Belt breaks & he's suddenly freefalling down the shaft, falls about 20ft, then catches the lip of the duct with his fingers. Sorry, no, just no. With all that velocity built up, his sweaty fingers would have slipped right off & down Maclaine would have gone. Hans & his Team would have then won! Poor Hans. He was cheated. :-(
A few other unconventional holiday films I'd also suggest are Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Lethal Weapon, Ghostbusters 2, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Batman Returns
@@jenmurrayxo the sequel of this wasn't directed by the same guy but it is as funny as this one. Lethal Weapon launched that series. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was directed by Shane Black and stars a pre Iron Man RDJ. Batman Returns was the 1992 follow up to Tim Burton's Batman released 3 years later(ironically the same year Ghostbusters 2 was released)
Although not as good as the original, "Die Hard II: Die Harder" (That is actually the tagline, believe it or not) and "Die Hard with a Vengeance" are worth watching. Skip all of the subsequent films.
Looks like you being doing some John McClane action yourself Jen, what did you do to your finger? Decide to become a badass yourself :D There's 6 Die Hard movies in the franchise, but its hard as usual to beat the first one which is and forever will be a classic. Still worth watching the others if you're wanting some decent action, but Yippee-Ki-Yay Jen keep the good times rolling. P.S. the meaning of Yippee-Ki-Yay is an expression of joy if you didnt know and was wondering :D
Lol oh I run a restaurant & always burning myself on things 🤦♀️ Ya I think I might see what 2 & 3 are all about! But ya hard to beat originals usually!
There are 5 Die Hards... With number 2 being another "Christmas Movie". The third is really great (my favourite). The fourth is so-so, and the fifth is not so good. The Lethal weapon series (4 films) are all pretty good Die Hard-like movies, with plenty of action and characters you just get really attached to. You'll love those as well...
Totes a Christmas movie! :D One of the best action films ever - cemented Bruce WIllis as a movie star and Alan Rickman's film debut (!) as filmdom;s greatest villain. Fun fact: Rickman was harrnessed for his stunt fall and they said they'd drop him on a 3 count and lied and dropped him on 1 so his reaction is truly of horror :D Fun reaction Jen : D
That tiny hat is just killing me. ;-) I put mine on (actual size) for the post but it's way too hot down here in Florida so I'm sticking with the flashing Christmas lights necklace. ... More importantly, the film is super-fun but, somewhat controversially, I don't consider it a true "Christmas movie" only because it's not about Christmas. It's an action caper set during the holiday season but not really about the holiday. I know, I know. People disagree with me all the time but if the only requirement for a film to be considered a Christmas movie is that it's set in November or December (or at the scene of a holiday party) then anything from "Lethal Weapon" and "Gremlins" to "Trading Places" and "Iron Man 3" would also be considered Christmas movies. All set during December, some containing holiday parties and none about Christmas... at all. Just my two pennies. I might also add that my birthday is the 26th and that makes me an expert. Don't argue with me. ;-) Happy Holidays to everyone (especially if you're still reading this).
I subscribed. I enjoy your reactions Jen. Request: you might have already seen it, but if not I would like to see you react to "Wonder" with Julia Roberts. It's a heartwarming movie that is nice around the holidays.
New follower here.. whoa whoa. stop. reverse. I was gonna talk smack about you like any pro internet troll would do. But ya mentioned the weed smoking line.. Your side ponytail rocks! I bid you a wonderful day and happy new year. Thanks for uploading!
