Gamkaskloof, also known as "Die Hel", or "The Hell" is located in a remote valley in the Swartberg mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was entirely cut off from the outside world until 1962, when the road; actually a steep, windy and sometimes dangerous gravel track, was built.
Most of the original 160 residents of the valley left soon after the road was completed, the last one departing in 1991. These days, Piet and Marinette Joubert, descendants of Annetjie Joubert, the last remaining resident, have created a Shangri-la, which is most definitely not hell, a small piece of paradise buried deep in the mountains. There is no cell phone reception, no internet and although it’s not a requirement, a 4×4 vehicle is definitely recommended to negotiate the sometimes treacherous gravel road.
We stayed in the "Bush Camp" on the farm "Fontein", here's their website: gamkaskloof.co.za/
Here's the drone video from our trip, equipment was a DJI Mavic 2 Air.

I’m Chris, video creator, and lover of road tripping & the great outdoors. Now exploring the off the beaten track, hidden places of Africa, and sharing the adventure in video, photos and words. Kangela is aimed at those who want to experience gravel road travel and off road adventures, but who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination.
I try to provide useful tips and background information about the unusual places that we visit, as well as endeavouring to draw attention to conservation, my intention is always to inform, educate and entertain.

In 1972 I drove a Ford Cortina 2500cc V6 towing a Sprite Muskateer caravan down into the Hel. This was done in conjunction with Caravan Magazine and Ford Motor Company. The Cortina p/u was fitted with a automatic transmission. This was in a time when caravans were not allowed onto Prince Alfred Pass. The road to the Hel was considered only suitable for 4 x 4 vehicles. The hairpins were so tight that at one stage the vehicle and caravan were in a full Jackie situation with the left front wheel centimeters from the edge of a sheer downslope. When driving past the houses we only saw figures peering at us through partially opened curtains. A visit to the cemetery highlighted the names of only a few families who had settled ther. The trip up was in complete contrast to the one down with continuous wheels pin from the loose shale.

Thank you so much for your personal account Kingsley. It’s a privilege to hear of what it was like to make the journey back in the day.
